Daily News & Rumors

Congratulations to the Oilers for winning 2 in a row, hopefully you can make it 3 tonight.

Kovalchuk is officially on the trading block as Thrashers GM Don Waddell offered 101 million dollars for 12 years and Ilya declinded.

It looks like the 3 remaining teams in on Kovalchuk are the Kings, Rangers and the Devils.

This from Larry Brooks of the NY Post "Source: price of NYR rental of Ilya is Staal or Del Zotto + Callahan or Dubinsky + Kreider or Stepan or Grachev + first rounder = No deal."

Ryan Whitney and Tim Gleason will fill in for Mike Komisarek and Paul Martin on the USA Olympic team.

This from Chip Alexander "Jim Rutherford said a deal is pending that will send Nic Wallin to another team. Rutherford not saying which team."

Daily news & rumors + Oilers talk

First off, I would like to congratulate the Oilers for finally picking up a win, now lets see if you can win 2 in a row.

TRADE

To the Flames:

F Ales Kotalik
F Chris Higgins

To the Rangers:

F Olli Jokinen
F Brandon Prust

Slava done in Atlanta?

Thrashers Forward Slava Kozlov has been a healthy scratch the last 2 games and will be a healthy scratch again tonight. Slava is obviously not happy about it and is being shopped by the Thrashers.

Nick Boynton

Nick Boynton clears waivers today at 12:00 ET, I would be surprised if he does not get claimed by someone.

**UPDATE** Nick Boynton has cleared waivers.

Caps call-up Alzner

The Washington Capitals have called-up Defenseman Karl Alzner.

Souray update

It looks like Sheldon Souray is done for the season with a broken hand.

Another "Get That Guy Fired" Rally Is In The Works

Well the smell of a "Get Someone Fired" rally is starting to stink in the hockey world once again. No, not in Edmonton again, well not yet anyways.

It seems that our dear old friend and former Oiler main man and current General Manager for the New York Rangers, Glen Sather is really feeling some fan backlash from their own New York Rangers fans. It appears that they want him fired from his job and they are prepared to rally as a group to support it.

With the Rangers sitting at GP54  W24  L23  OTLPTS55 and are -as of this writing - sitting in 9th. Compared to the Oilers, it's not that bad. They are a win away from being back in the playoffs and they are tied with 4 other teams with 55 points, so really, is it that bad?

Ranger fans would say yes.

So how do you get your message out? Have a rally. So what/where/when the hell is this rally you say? Here is the Facebook page for the Rally and here is the petition to sign if you want Glen Sather fired.

If you are lazy, here is what the Facebook Group page says about Glen Sather;

"Tired of Mismanagement, Bad Contracts, being mired in Mediocrity and a lack of results? Come down to Madison Square Garden before the Rangers– Sabres game, join the rally, and let Mr. Jim Dolan know that you want Glen Sather FIRED immediately!!!!!!"

Again, if you are lazy, here is what the Petition says about Glen Sather to James Dolan;

"Dear James Dolan,

For the past 10 years, loyal Rangers fans around the world have watched our beloved team go nowhere due to the leadership of the clubs President and General Manager, Glen Sather. Our franchise has been in a state of disarray for 10+ years, and there is no end in sight. This here petition is being signed by Rangers fans around the globe who are asking you to remove Mr. Sather from his job, and to replace him with someone who will restore our hockey club to the top of the NHL with hopes that we will become Stanley Cup Champions. This petition is being signed by people who want Glen Sather removed whether they are attending the rally March 7th outside Madison Square Garden or not. Remove him please James!

Yours Truly,
Loyal Rangers fans around the globe."

Geez that sounds like the same way he left the Oilers before going to New York, isn't it?

Below are the details for the proposed Rally if you want to attend in person;
When: Sunday, March 7, 2010
Time: 5:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: The Steps Outside Madison Square Garden
Street: 1 Penn Plaza
City/Town: New York, NY

Now with a payroll of $56.6 million and sitting in 9th in the East - possibly 11th or 7th - that isn't a great way to appease your fans. Nevermind the fact that this is New York, and they are quite familiar with the game of hockey and can't be fooled into thinking the NYR have a good product on the ice. They don't.

It's crazy to think that he was the same guy that built, molded and taught that great 80's Oiler squad to 5 Stanley Cups and now he may become jobless. I suppose he could move up in the NYR organization and out of the limelight. Would that make the NYR fans happy? Probably not. I'm sure they just want him gone, period.

Good luck to those organizing and attending this rally. I applaud your efforts, yet wonder if it's worth it? Does James Dolan actually pull the plug on Slats? Do the NYR fans actually get their way? I guess we will see how this unfolds in March after the petition and rally.

Let's just hope for their sake, that they get more than the 7 angry fans that showed up for the failed Fire MacT Rally in Edmonton. They had over 10,000 people sign up on Facebook much like the Ranger fans are doing and 7 guys showed up. That's it. Not really an impact statement.

If I was the organizer of the NYR rally, I wouldn't get my hopes up that people will actually show up. I guess you can always hope, but good luck anyways.

On a side note: I wouldn't be willing to bet that Katz considers bringing Slats back to Edmonton. I think it's possible, but unlikely. *shudders at the thought*

Oil Change Underway

Mike Comrie - According to Larry Brooks of the NY Post,  the New York Rangers are more than just one piece away from being Stanley Cup contenders, he suggests the Rangers could use a few players but don't expect Phaneuf or Kovalchuk. Sather needs to let the team play it out. If he wants to make a move, maybe acquiring a Centre like Comrie for a small price would be worth a shot. If this is the case Mike would likely play on line 1 with Marion Gaborik.

Bobby Ryan -  Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com suggests that Ducks GM Bob Murray will not trade Bobby Ryan and is confident they can get him re-signed.

Petr Sykora - The Minnesota Wild sent Petr Sykora down to there farm team however, Petr did not report and both sides have agreed to terminate Petr's contract and let him become a UFA.

UPDATE: The Anaheim Ducks have re-signed Goaltender Jonas Hiller to a 4 year deal worth 18 mil/ 4.5 a season.

As always all comments are welcome.

B&J #79 Edmonton Oilers Recap vs. New York Rangers (11/5/09)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Horcoff and Souray.  Horcoff has shoulder problems and will be out 7-10 days (from what I know) and Souray skated yesterday and today so that's good a good sign.  He will still be out for awhile.

- When is Deslauriers going to play again?  How is he going to play 20 games this year when he's seen very little action so far this season?  The team stinks right now anyways so why not?  They may play harder with the back up in net.

- I still can't believe that my cable bill is going to kill me next month right before Christmas.  4 PPV's in 6 games.  Why?  And the NHL wonders why people watch the games for free on their PC's.  And the worst part is... we pay $13.95 for lackluster efforts.  PPV's are always bad games for the Oilers.  I just might start watching them for free too.

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Ethan Moreau - Just when the team is trying to mount a comeback, you push a guy down and the puck is no where near you.  WTF were you thinking?  Did you not notice that the team was sucking bad anyways on the PK?  Or is this your way of taking the team (bull) by the horns?  ps. It didn't work.

------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - He did nothing to contribute. Plus he tops it off with the BTP of the game.  Baaaad effort.
(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - He also did nothing to contribute to this team.  Well... other than some bad errant passes.  When is he going to go on waivers?

------------------

BEERS

Sam Gagner - He played like he was 200lbs.  Quinn wants guys to go to the "tough" areas and Gagner does just that.  He was the guy that was taking the beating so the team might have a chance of a screen or a rebound.  I really think that this kid is going to be the "man" for the Oilers in the next 2 years.  He has a ways to go, but when he gets there he is going to be scary good.  Good effort tonight Gags.  Budweiser?  Cheers!

Patrick O'Sullivan - He did everything he could tonight, well, other than score.  But he did get an assist on the Comrie goal.  He really needs to watch his turnovers.  He had 3 tonight.  But I really like his full out effort that he shows just about every game.  If this team is going to suck, then it's hard to blame guys that try hard.  A mug o' beer?  Cheers!

Taylor Chorney - I just don't see him getting demoted now to 7th guy when Smid comes back in.  And honestly, I don't see him losing a spot when Souray comes back.  I'm expecting a trade from the Oilers soon.  This kid is for real.  He played a real solid game tonight and had 3 blocked shots.  He was flawless.  Frosty beer time?  Cheers!

Lubomir Visnovsky - He's so damn good that it makes me wonder why LA gave him up.  I'm glad we have him.  I've never seen anyone catch Gaborik like that.  This is our best guy on D until Souray gets back.  He scores a beauty while taking 4 shots and had 2 takeaways and 2 blocked shots.  He's freaking great.  Enjoy a cold beer Lubo. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Ales Hemsky (He had the moves and the energy, but faded half ways in the game), Tom Gilbert (He played a lot and looked ok), Denis Grebeshkov (Played well, he just sucked at penalty killing.), Andrew Cogliano (He was flying out there. He managed 6 shots but couldn't score.)

------------------

JEERS

Robert Nilsson - He managed to be the only person on the team that ended up a -1.  Yay!  Seriously, get rid of this guy.  He makes the most asinine plays that I have ever seen.  Blind passes DO NOT WORK.  How is he getting minutes and MacIntyre gets 1:40?  I say to the minors with you. Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Ethan Moreau (He had the BTP and was invisible but led the team in hits. Go figure?), Fernando Pisani (Bad penalties and a bad game.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - I'm getting sick of this already.  WTF Oilers?  This is getting old.  Does Quinn need to crack the whip and shake up things again?  I'd send Nilsson packing and send a message to the team that enough is enough.  Either crap or get off the pot.  This team will never win unless all the players are going to show up.  These last 7 games... the Oilers have not.  Boooo!!!

Paq Twinn - Another bad effort by the Oilers. How many of these games before Tambo makes a move. The 1st line played good tonight, and the 2nd had their moments, the D weren't that bad either. Everyone else had bad games. How long will it take, to learn how to clear the puck. The wingers are too deep, trying to help, and then they give up point shots. Its a vicsous circle that has to stop for this team to succeed. Game Grade: D.
