Roster, Roster, Roster! The New Look Edmonton Oilers

Here is the Oilers roster before the big change. Steve Tambellini had a very busy summer and did quite a lot of work around here.
LAST YEAR OILERS ROSTER

He did some real wonderful stuff like getting rid of the three terrible Oilers from last year, Ethan Moreau, Patrick O'Sullivan and Robert Nilsson.

He managed to re-sign all the Restricted Free Agents that were needed to be signed, except Cogliano. From the reports that I have heard, Cogliano's camp has a contract and they, so far, have not signed. It's completely in their court now. Just sign the damn thing and have a great year to prove them, and us, wrong.

The Oilers still seem hell bent on running the team this year with a bunch of rookies and it's looking more and more like I am wrong. I said that Hall and either Pääjärvi or Eberle would be on the team. It does appear like all three have a legitimate chance of making the team. Training camp should be fun, especially if you throw in Linus Omark. That's four potential rookies on the roster. Can't wait to see what happens.

Tamby signed Martin Gerber for more than just insurance reasons. That is one hell of a deal and a two way contract to boot. Gerber will be called upon more than once this year so this one will end up being a great signing.

I suppose the biggest shocker was the Potulny/Pouliot walking. I was a little shocked that they weren't brought back. I really liked Potulny and I thought he played well enough last year to get another shot this year. I guess it wasn't meant to be.

I never really liked Pouliot, but still didn't think the Oilers would give up on him like they did. He did deserve a real solid chance that MacT never gave him.

Ryan Stone also left and went south (to Calgary). He also played well IMO, and once again, it will be strange to see an ex-Oiler in a fLames (I'm looking at you Glencross) uniform.

Mike Comrie was left to leave as well. The New Mrs. Duff has just signed with the Penguins so good luck to him.

--------------------------------------------------

So let's now take a look at the roster that the Oilers might start the year with.

I Have Been Shut Down! and Other Random Jambalaya Thoughts

Yes, I am moving to a new house and the internet will be shut off from today till Sunday. Then we are back. So please no crying that OilersJambalaya.com is going anywhere. We're not, I was kidding in the title.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

RANDOM JAMBALAYA

- So what does everyone think of the new OIL TERMINAL podcast? I loved it. I thought that Eric and Scott where really good at it and they seemed to work well together. It was quite enjoyable. I would like some arguing once in a while though. You guys can't always agree. ;) Maybe they need a splash of Smokin' Ray in there?

- When is Gagner going to get signed? WTF is the holdup? Maybe he DID receive some offers from other teams and he's just making the Oilers sweat it out? All I know is I want this kid signed ASAP.

- Notice how I didn't wonder about Cogs? Maybe I'm over him already? Isn't he traded yet?

- How awesome is that that the OKC Barons are coming to Calgary? February 17th the Barons will take on the Abbotsford Heat in Calgary. The Saddledome should be packed for that game. Maybe we will have a OilersJambalaya.com and OilFieldHockey.com meet up at the game?

- Speaking of the Barons, if you have never been there, you should check out okcbarons.com. They have pretty good website that is just waiting to get going once the season starts. The new season is just about ready to get started. GO BARONS GO!

- Finally, the AHL has realeased their schedules for this up coming season. Check it out here.

- I wish I would have listened to Jack Michaels when the Stockton Thunder was playing the Alaska Aces in the Kelly Cup playoffs. I, for obvious reasons, listened to Mike Benton (Stockton's media guy and the Play by Play guy) instead. Mike's been great to us here at OJ, but I am now wishing I checked out Michaels then.

- Also speaking of the Thunder. Check out StocktonThunder.com. Great site and great people running it.

- If you or someone you know is going to the Young Stars tournament, let us know. We want to hear your take on things.

SEE EVERYONE SUNDAY NIGHT!!!

Days of Summer

We're less than a month from training camp, I'm completely bored without any hockey or Oiler talk and there are two significant names that have yet to be signed by our Oilers: Cogliano and Gagner. They're restricted free agents and we've waited all summer for their signings. We still wait. It's actually been very quiet on the Gagner front from both sides. I'm confident it will get done but it is interesting that it's taking so long. My guess is they're arguing over term?

Staples mentioned the Capitals were interested in either our Souray (used to be known as Big Sexy) or the Canucks' Bieksa. The Oilers have been trying to trade or give-away Souray all summer. I'm a bit surprised by this but if the Oilers can dump him for a bag of pucks, I'd be quite happy. And once again, Cogliano's name is being thrown in the mix as well. His name gets added to every single trade rumor.

And one last shout out to Pisani who signed with the Hawks. He will forever be remembered in Edmonton for his play during the spring of 2006. One of my favorite moments, game 5 of the finals and a beautiful overtime goal.

Gilbert Brule Re-Signs With Oilers / Sam Gagner Next?

Gilbert Brule an RFA, signed a 2 year deal today with the Edmonton Oilers worth $1.85 million per year. With the new deal, Brule avoids arbitration that was scheduled for August 3rd. I expect Brule to have a good year this season. He has lots to prove.

Sam Gagner has still not signed a new contract with the Oilers yet. Gagner is also a RFA and one would have to think that he would be next in line to sign with the Oilers. No doubt he was waiting to see what Brule got before he proceed to negotiate his deal. Does Gagner try and go for $3.5 - $4 million a year range? You bet, but I think he signs for $3 million a season range. Just a guess. Stay tuned on more Gagner contract news right here at OilersJambalaya.com.

Can This Version Of The Edmonton Oilers Become The 1983/84 Oilers?

I have been debating for a while now if the Oilers should have more than two rookies in the lineup next season. Most of you know that --before the changes by Tamby to make the team tough-- I have thought that only Hall and Paajarvi would start the year in the NHL and Eberle and Omark would go to the Oklahoma City Barons.  But the more I talk to people about it, there is just so many questions that need to be answered and scenarios to think of.

Would the rookies be better off spending a year in Oklahoma City instead of playing in the NHL? Probably. It's only logical and makes sense.

Would it be a great way to fill the Cox Convention Center and build a fan base by adding players like Eberle and Paajarvi to the opening day roster? You bet it would and that's what the OKC Barons are going to need. You can't just open the doors and expect people to just come watch a game. Names sell.

But you also need to think that since players like Eberle and Paajarvi are signed to a contract, it would essentially burn up a year on their respective deals. Not exactly a good thing right? Hmmmm....

Then you look at the way that Tambellini is building the current Oilers roster. He's added some big boys with the likes of Vandermeer, MacIntyre and Foster to go with a talented and skilled small team. It seems like he's preparing to ice a young rookie squad with large muscle to surround them. The writings on the wall one would think.

But is it the right thing to do? Is it too soon?

So now I have myself thinking about another young Oilers team. The first cup winning team from the 1983/84 season. That team is a fairly young team much like the current one we may possibly have now.

How did that team from the 80's get so good so quick? Well I have a theory.

Gretzky, Coffey, Messier and Anderson were all just a mere 22 years old when they won the first cup. Jari Kurri and Andy Moog were 23, Kevin Lowe and Charlie Huddy were 24. Grant Fuhr was just 20.

The oldest guys on the team were Willy Lidstrom at 32 years old and Jaroslav Pouzar was 31. The only two guys over 30. Wow!

So here we have a team with no real veteran leadership yet, the won the Stanley Cup. How is that possible?

The kids grew together. They played together as rookies. They became friends and won for each other like winners need to do. Isn't this what this current team should do? Should the opening roster include Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi and Omark? You add those four plus the youth of Gagner, Brule, Cogliano, Smid, Chorney, Peckham, & Dubnyk equals the same youthfulness as the Oilers of old. Maybe this squad can grow and learn together like that team did? Maybe this squad is just like that 83/84 team? Take a look, we even have our Pouzar's and Lidstrom's in Horcoff, Strudwick and Khabibulin. The two teams are building to be sort of the same.

But isn't the smart decision to just let the kids develop slowly? In Oklahoma City?

The Silence Is Killing Me / The Edmonton Oilers RFA's

As this off season trickles by, one has to wonder what is up with the Oilers and the restricted free agents.

Has Sam Gagner's agent been talking to Tambellini? What about Gilbert Brule? Did he get an offer yet? What about Andrew Cogliano? Do the Oilers sign him before/if he gets traded? Do both Deslauriers and Dubnyk get a tendered offer? Is only one coming back? Are both coming back? Lot's of questions that need answering.

Like I said in the title, the silence is killing me.

I would hope that Gagner receives an offer before July 1st as I'm sure at least one other team will throw out an offer sheet for him. I like Gagner too much to lose him because the Oilers didn't try hard enough before it's too late. If another team offers $5 million +, the Oilers will be in tough to sign him to that deal. I should point out that Gagner isn't worth $5+, but another team will do what it takes to get him. He is a key cog for the Oilers moving forward.

Vanek, Kessler, Penner and Kessel all were over paid for this reason. Big offer sheets. Let's not have this happen to Gagner. $3.5 million over 5 years is fair and let's move on and get to signing some of the other young players.

I would also hope that they can sign both goalies. I personally would take the chance and send JDD down to OKC. It is possible that they could lose him on waivers, but if he clears, that provides one heck of a goalie for the OKC Barons.

I would keep Dubnyk with the Oilers and have him backup Khabibulin (and Khabibulin's replacement once he gets hurt.) So if I'm the GM and I'm going to try and send down JDD, he only gets a one year deal with no signing bonus (just in case).

I really hope that Marc Pouliot doesn't elect to go to arbitration. I just can't see him making a good enough case to get big dollars. He should just resign to whatever the Oilers offer. He needs to play well this year and make a strong case for himself next year.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- JDD was fan-freaking-tastic! He made some huge saves and really made sure the Canucks weren't going to tie the game. Wow! He faced 33 shots and looked like a for real #1 guy. Can this guy stay around for a while or does he disappear the next game?

- Tom Gilbert scores a goal and notches an assist to lead the offence for the Oilers. His goal came on his only shot of the game and it was his first goal in 42 games. Ouch! He also had 3 takeaways and 2 blocked shots. Great game for Gilbert. All this in 22:23 of ice time.

- Ryan Whitney has been very, very good since acquiring him for Visnovsky. Tonight he had 3 hits and played a team high 24:46. He's going to be fun to watch next year.

- Stortini was challenged a lot and never dropped the gloves. What for? The Oilers were leading all game. I was surprised that he didn't to be honest. With 11:01 of ice time, he was pretty good. He had 5 hits.

- Andrew Cogliano is a new player. He's still rockin' it up with Brule and Penner and it showed by him scoring tonight. Maybe he found a home with those two guys for next season?

The Not So Good:

- Taylor Chorney needs to not be in the NHL at this point. We have all seen the good Chorney. Tonight wasn't that guy. But when you don't have much other options, he'll do.

- Ethan Moreau should NOT get 16:58 in ice time. That's just plain nuts.

- Sam Gagner on the 4th line is stupid. STUPID!

- Being 40% on faceoffs isn't good enough to be a winner. I really hope the Oilers address this because this happens more games than it should. And it's not just one player, it's all the centers.

The Side Dish:

- No Jordan Eberle until Friday. I know... it sucks.

- The Stockton Thunder have added Bryan Young and Matt Marquardt as they were assigned to Stockton.

DID YOU KNOW? (Facts About The Edmonton Oilers)

Did you know... that the Oilers are so bad that when a sports program shows the standings, the Oilers are all but blacked out?

Did you know... the new Oklahoma City AHL team will be named soon? It's be rumored that they will announce it on the 29th.

Did you know... in light of Devan Dubnyk getting sick, the Oilers signed Nathan Deobald to a one game contract. He will be their backup in tonight's game. Lucky bastard. He wore #1 and had a great seat on the bench. He plays for the University of Calgary.

THE SHOOTOUT VIDEO

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Devan Dubnyk almost lost his first win with .03 seconds left in the 3rd period. But he didn't. Lucky for him he continued his good play for a full 65 minutes plus the shootout. Devan Dubnyk has a legitimate NHL win under his belt. I couldn't be happier for him. Great job Devan.

- Ryan Whitney scored his first goal as an Oiler tonight. He's been pretty good since we acquired him. I'm still finding him to be a decent pick up in a trade. Especially for a guy like Lubomir Visnovsky. Whitney had 5 shots and 3 blocked shots to go with his goal. I'd say a decent night.

- Andrew Cogliano is a whole different guy right now. You put him on the top line and he performs. He scores a goal and gets an assist on the Whitney goal. This was one of his best games in a long time. He was solid at both ends of the ice. But can he do it again?

- Gilbert Brule has been quietly one of the Oilers most consistent guys all season long. He did it again tonight as he keeps showing that chemistry with Penner and Cogliano. Brule assisted on both Oiler goals and played a good physical game all game. He's, in my opinion, a keeper for next season. You can just tell he wants to be good.

The Not So Good:

- Ethan Moreau is just plain bad. it's like he has no clue on how to play the game anymore. If Comrie was a healthy scratch, I'm going to be very ticked off.

- Theo Peckham is going to take a lot of the blame for the tying goal by not playing the puck properly, but where was the defender watching the back door guy (Rafalski)? Where was Johnson? Horcoff?

- Speaking of Peckham, his partnership with Johnson wasn't so shit hot tonight. Both of them finished a -2 and while they did look good for long periods of time, they had those rookie mistakes that can cause a game to be lost. They have been a good duo and I'd expect them to be a little better next game.

- I really do not like the Minard/Gagner/Stortini line. Either Quinn figures that Gagner is so damn good that he makes others around good or he's really ticked at him? I honestly do not know the answer so I can't tell you either way. I would hope it's because he thinks he's the cats ass.

The Side Dish:

- If you missed it, Jordan Eberle scored a goal in the first minute of his first game with the Springfield Falcons this year. CLICK HERE for the game recap.

- Also tonight the Stockton Thunder had a game to play. They lost to the Utah Grizzles in a very one-sided game by the score of 6-2. The recap will be posted soon on Oilers Jambalaya.

- The Canadian Sledge Hockey team also lost their game tonight. They were playing against Norway for the bronze medal and Norway scored with 3 seconds left. It's a shame because Canada wanted this so bad after being shocked by Japan yesterday. Good try and we still love you guys. GOCANADAGO!

--------------------

DID YOU KNOW? (Facts About The Edmonton Oilers)

Did you know... at this point of the Oilers season, the majority of fans wanted an Detroit win tonight (to be ahead of Calgary in the standings) over Devan Dubnyk to get his first win tonight and not achieve the record for longest in NHL without first win.

Did you know... Gilbert Brule is 3rd on the team in points with 34 points?

Did you know... Devan Dubnyk started in goal 11 times this season, including tonight? That's a lot of games with no win.

Sam Gagner Swoons Us Again... But Where Are His Teammates?

This is somewhat of a game recap of the Edmonton Oilers vs the Minnesota Wild game on Sportsnet West.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Sam Gagner earned some real nice assists and played 18:28. He played a pretty good game all around, but his faceoffs really need work. He hit the boards a little strange halfway through the first period and I was hoping he wasn't going to be hurt. Two assists later, he's fine.

The Not So Good:

- Pat Quinn is making it clear he hated his defence corps. Johnson, Gilbert and Whitney all played over 21:00 minutes each. Peckham played 18:09, Chorney had 16:08 and Strudwick played 16:29. I'm sure their minutes would have been reduced even more if he could have.

- This was one boring game. Usually they suck anyways because it's against the Wild, it seemed to suck even more tonight. *yawn*

- The Oilers coverage in their own zone was one of the main reasons they lost. The Wild were free to roam. And roam they did.

- Why didn't the linesmen let Stortini and Scott fight? Mind you, if the passion for the fight was actually there, they would have fought at some point. They didn't.

- Taylor Chorney sucks!

--------------------

DID YOU KNOW? (Facts About The Edmonton Oilers)

Did you know... Sam Gagner has matched his last year's points total of 41 tonight with his two assists? He's only 8 points away from tying his most points output in his rookie season with 49 points.

Did you know... Zack Stortini is leading the team with 148 penalty minutes this season?

Did you know... Dean Arsene and Johan Motin are the only two Oilers to play on the team this year and not have a point?

BEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - He fought hard for a shutout and was awesome. Watching him beat Marty Brodeur made me remember why I wasn't sad about him getting pulled at the Olympics. JDD was lucky at times, but for the most part made good on his end while the team managed to score twice. Good job Jeff. How about a Bud? Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - His grit and passion came out in every game he plays. He is always trying to do something out there. He was in the right place at the right time for his goal and it was all because of the way that line worked together. Brule was a factor in this game. Is it frosty mug time? Cheers!

Sam Gagner - He was also a big reason why his line was clicking. Gagner had himself another solid game and he wasn't even on the top line. He had 3 shots and picked up an assist on the Pouliot goal. Good job Sammy. How about a cold Kokanee? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Mike Comrie (He quietly plays a great game often. Like tonight), Ryan Whitney (His passing is really good. He's also a big guy that can skate well. He may just make me eat my words.), Marc Pouliot (He scored the Oilers 2nd goal and played a pretty decent game.), Taylor Chorney (He was +2 and played good. This playing time that he's getting now is great for him. Next season can't come soon enough.), Jason Strudwick (He went from #7 guy, to #3/4 guy. Wow! He played good tonight and was +2.), Shawn Horcoff (Good game from Horcoff. He managed to look not useless.), Aaron Johnson (He's another guy that will make me eat my words. He's better than I thought.),

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Great game by the Oilers. I was happy to see JDD get the shutout and I was happy to see the crowd enjoy themselves. But STOP losing guys. The dive for five needs to keep on course. I keep hoping these guys don't do any late season runs. That's the last thing the fans need right now. To finish 10th in the West. Oy!

Paq Twinn - He had some technical troubles. He watched the game, but can't report on it just yet. Stay tuned.

#114 B&J Oilers Full Game Recap vs Wild (2/4/10)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? Brule and Nilsson sat out this game. Brule was a late scratch and Pisani drew in for him. The same defenseman played tonight as well. Dubnyk was sent down to play some games and Bryan Pitton was recalled to take his place. Did you know he makes more in this one game then he does in a month of AHL pay.

- So tonight I got a little confused and mixed up with The Oilers and a Oilers News poster on Twitter. Another story was posted tonight about the "Souray list of teams" thing that's been going around. I asked the Oilers and meant to ask the Oilers News if it was legit thinking that the news guy was legit (he's not). If it was legit then, the story writer should not use the word "reportedly". You see what I was getting at? Of course the Oilers News guys didn't respond, but within seconds the Oilers.com did respond. This is what they said. "Tambellini said today the information out there is not correct." Oh, I see.

So did he give a list with those names on it or not? Is it true?

BEERS

Sam Gagner - Gagner was once again on top of his game. He made some really nice plays and assisted on the Oilers first goal of the game. His pass to Comrie was unbelievable. He did lack in the stat area tonight, but to watch him is always a thrill. Good game Gags. Want a cold Budweiser? Cheers!

Mike Comrie - Comrie was also pretty darn good. He had 4 shots and scored the Oilers first goal. He may not be the flashy Mike Comrie anymore, but he's smarter. It' too bad we didn't get to see him all year. If I'm the Oilers, I think I'd take another look next season. Good game MC. Feel like a Heineken? Cheers!

The 4th Line - This 4th line was rock solid tonight. Pouliot took 6 shots, Jacques scores a goal and has 3 shots, and Stortini assists on the JFJ goal. What wasn't to like about these guys? They kicked ass and took names. Jacques had 4 hits and they played like a bunch of mean high school bullies. You guys can share a 6 pack. I just don't want to get punched in the face. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Jeff Deslauriers (He was stellar before the 3rd period. After that he was not so stellar.), Tom Gilbert (He really has emerged into this quiet but well played defenseman. His game was good again tonight. Very solid.), Denis Grebeshkov (While he did make some small errors, he was pretty good. He did manage 2 hits.), Ryan Potulny (He was slightly better than average. Nothing that stood out.)

------------------

JEERS

Lubomir Visnovsky - He may have looked OK, but he really wasn't. Sure he makes great plays, but a few times I seen him pass it right to a Wild player. No Oiler around. I'm sure that was one of the reasons why Quinn played him less. At the end of the night he played 18:27 and was a team worst -3. Not good Lubo. Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): None

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Not a bad game for the first 40 minutes. Then the wheels started to fall off a bit. Deslauriers still played decent despite getting burned. I figured a 3 game streak would a have been to good to be true. Streak over.

#113 Beers & Jeers Edmonton Oilers Recap vs Flyers (2/3/10)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? Things get interesting. Nilsson and Pisani are the two that are sitting tonight. Why? I don't know. But they are. Smid and Staios were skating today, so that's a good sign. Chorney and Plante are still in lineup tonight.

Philadelphia Flyers - 0

Edmonton Oilers - 1

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Alex Plante - It wasn't so much a bad timing penalty as it was more of a bad luck penalty. He went to clear it in the Oilers zone. Just as he was releasing, the puck rolled and went off his stick a little high and it went over the glass. Thankfully the Oilers killed it off. It's hard to blame the kid for that penalty. Complete accident.

------------------

BEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - The man posted a shutout. WoOoOoOoO! Good for him. Some where Robin Brownlee is yelling, "I told you so!" at all the naysayers. Myself included. JDD was rock solid all night. Lucky a few times but overall, the best player on the ice. Great job Jeff. It's Miller Time. Cheers!

Sam Gagner - Is there anything he can't so? *swoon* Gagner continues he late season point streak. Let's be honest. Do you want 1st half Penner or 2nd half Gagner leading your team into the playoffs? You chose Gagner too? He had 3 shots, 2 hits and an assist on the winning goal. Good game little guy. Here's a frosty mug of Bud. Mmmm. Cheers!

Ryan Potulny - He scores the winning goal with 16.1 seconds left. Who the hell discarded him from their roster like he was a spare part? Oh right, the Flyers did. I bet that felt good for him? He had 3 shots, 2 hits, 2 blocked shots, 2 takeaways and was 5W-3L for 63% on faceoffs and a partridge in a pear tree. What? Too late for Christmas jokes? Great game Ryan. You impress me every game you play. How about a Kokanee? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Alex Plante (I like this kid. He plays tough and takes no guff. He even wanted a piece of Carcillo and he declined. I'm glad we are getting a look at him. Can we stop asking for Peckham all the time?), Tom Gilbert (I really liked him tonight. This may have been the toughest that I have ever seen him play. Serious.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He had a team high 3 takeaways. How does he do it? He was creamed and looked hurt. He came back and played but we will cross the fingers it's nothing like a long term nagging type of injury.), Everyone else was pretty good as well. No one sucked. O'Sullivan and Cogliano each had 4 shots for a team lead.

------------------

JEERS

None - I know... it's strange for me too.

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - 2 wins in a row. Cool. But don't forget to keep your eyes on the prize. But seriously. The Oilers were good tonight. At times the Flyers killed them, yet they didn't get scored on. It was nice to see the team play as a team.

Beers & Jeers #112 - Edmonton Oilers Full Game Recap vs Carolina Hurricanes (2/1/10)

Who's in? From what I understand, Potulny was sick today and he did not play. Pisani also sat out and we don't know why. Stortini and Comrie draw back in. Alex Plante has also been called up and he will play in his 1st ever NHL game. He will play with Strudwick.

- Since it's a PPV, not many people are paying to watch this game. I'm a hardcore and since I needed to watch it in order to do the Beers & Jeers, I paid for it.

FINAL SCORE

Carolina Hurricanes - 2

Edmonton Oilers - 4

------------------

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

------------------

BEERS

Marc Pouliot - Wow! Talk about a breakout game. He scored the Oilers 3rd goal (game winner) and assisted on the Jacques (1st goal of game) goal and finished a +2. Not too bad. He also had 3 shots. Pouliot even found some time on the PK and the PP which means Quinn was liking him tonight. He needs to improve his faceoffs but played a good game. Feel like a cold one? Cheers!

Sam Gagner - Gagner had himself a good game. He was contributing nice plays and even squeaked a goal by Cam Ward. Gagner has been on a points rampage and thanks to that goal, it continues. He had 2 shots and a takeaway. Good stuff? Not really. But good enough for a Budweiser? Cheers!

Mike Comrie -  The boy in the bubble was might fine tonight. He made some real nice plays and really led his line tonight. He was the one "making" things happen. He had 6 shots and picks up an assist on the Gagner goal. Solid night out for Mono Mike. How about a can of Pilsner? That should cure what you have? Cheers!

Alex Plante - His first ever NHL game and he's thrown to the lions. OK. At this point in the season, every team is a lion. But Plante did pretty good. He didn't see any PP or PK time but did manage to play 12:00 minutes. Not only did he look OK out there, he picks up his first ever NHL point with an assist on the Jacques goal. Good for him. If that doesn't boost the confidence then nothing will. Frosty cold one rookie? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Gilbert Brule (I liked Brule. He played pretty good. He scored a goal and served up 3 hits.), Andrew Cogliano (I also liked him. he tried hard and was rewarded with an assist on the Brule goal.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He is now the Oilers best defenseman. He lived up to it. He played over 21:00 minutes and was a +1.), Zack Stortini (Storts drew back in after sitting for 2 games and made the best of it. He was banging and crashing for 4 hits and he added an assist.), JF Jacques (He scored and had an assist. What the hell huh? All this and he only played 10:00 minutes.), Ethan Moreau (He had a good game. It was a trange sight for sure. Adding Comrie ure helped that line.), Shawn Horcoff (He also had a good game with Comrie. Watch for Quinn to stick with this line.)

------------------

JEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - Maybe I am being a little harsh, but his 2 goals that went by him were weak. Those were shots you should have saved. For that reason alone, Booooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Taylor Chorney (Now it's totally not his fault, but he was burned at least 3 times tonight.  However, he did have a team high 5 blocked shots and played OK. He just needs more experience.), Denis Grebeshkov (He had 3 giveaways and I don't expect anything less from him. Sure he played pretty good, but he needs to stop doing that.), Dustin Penner (His penalty was lazy and pissed Quinn off. He at times had that fire to compete, other times it was gone. At one point Quinn had him benched.), Robert Nilsson (He wasn't great tonight at all. I've seen him better.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Finally a win for the Edmonton Oilers. Do you know how hard it is to write about a stinky team? You can only say so much before you start repeating yourself.  The refs only blew one call and that was the Comrie call. He didn't even see the Canes player coming. Pure accident. Oh well. The Oilers gained a lead and held on to it for a full 60 minutes. That might have been the best full game they have played in months.  All I can say is that it was worth the PPV money. Finally.

Paq Twinn - He missed the game because he is boycotting the Oilers PPV's for the rest of the season. Can you blame him?

B&J #111 / Battle of Alberta / Oilers vs Flames (1/30/10)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? O'Sullivan draws back in and Comrie sits out with Stortini. Other than that, the lines stay the same. Dubnyk will start in goal and will try to get his first win.

- On this wonderful Hockey Day In Canada, we get to watch a Battle of the Losers. Both teams are on losing streaks (Oilers 12 and Flames 9) and one team will end it after this game is over. Spoiler alert: It wasn't the Oilers. They were killed.

- This is the first time in The Edmonton Oilers history that they have lost all the regular season games to the Flames. They have never been swept before and this is a shitty record to break. This is another low point for this storied franchise and it may just get worse yet. This season may go down as the worst season ever for the Edmonton Oilers. How sad is that?

- Why wouldn't they have the Oilers play in a set of Vintage Oilers white/orange & blue uniforms to play against Calgary and their Vintage uniforms? It would have looked good. I miss the 80's...

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - I know... surprise! And yes, Moreau played. *shrugs shoulders*

------------------

BEERS

None - The score was 6-1. No Beers For You!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Sam Gagner (He scored the Oilers only goal and continues his point streak. He even busted out a spin-o-rama tonight. He's was trying out there. He took a both teams high, 6 shots. It was reported that he even stopped in front of the Flames bench and challenged them. That's BALLS!), Dustin Penner (He wasn't great by no means. He was average at best. But he was the only guy with an even on +/-.), Ryan Potulny (He once again played hard. He's earning his spot. With 4 shots and 2 blocked shots, he's at least trying to win.), Lubomir Visnovsky (A game where he wasn't credited with a giveaway. He played pretty decent and finished -1. He had 2 takeaways and 2 blocked shots.), Andrew Cogliano (He played OK. He had a smokin' good chance in the 3rd where he burned everyone but Kipper snagged it with the glove.)

------------------

JEERS

Denis Grebeshkov - His brutal giveaways continued tonight. He was horrible to watch and he struggled all night. Brian McGrattan even burned him on a play. Embarrassing. To those people that would rather trade Gilbert over Grebeshkov, please reconsider. Gilbert is never this bad. Time to let this guy go. Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Sheldon Souray (Took the 5 on 3 penalty and that was the PP goal more or less sealed the deal on this game. As a highlight, he did however fight Iginla in a spirited fight. It was well overdue and I wondered if Iginla would ever man up and fight Souray. ***Souray fractured his hand on Iggy's face in that fight. It was confirmed by Pat Quinn after the game was over.***), Devan Dubnyk (He was hung out to dry a lot tonight. Some goals he had no chance and others he could/should have saved those. I like Dubey, but tonight, he wasn't very good.), Moreau/Horcoff/Pisani (This line sucked. They didn't seen to be effective at all. All three were bad.)

------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - What a good day, yet such a shitty ending to it. It was Hockey Day In Canada and I spent it with my family. We watched hockey, played mini sticks and watched some more hockey. The Oilers losing all the regular season games to the Flames is the first time in Oilers history that that has happened. That's a sad record to give up.  Reading the comments on Twitter, it's clear the fans care a lot less about this team now. And how can anyone blame them. It's really hard to watch this. Do I pay for the PPV next game? I know it's not worth it but I don't miss games. Sometimes this team pisses me off. And this is one of those times.

Paq Twinn - fLames won SIX to ONE. Season Series- fLames SIX, Oilers ZERO. Nuff said. Game Grade: F

Beers & Jeers #110 / Oilers Game Recap vs St. Louis Blues (1/28/10)

Who's in? Mike Comrie and Gilbert Brule will draw back into the lineup tonight which means that two need to sit. Stortini and O'Sullivan drew the short straws for tonight. The lines have changes slightly from last game. Staios and Smid are still out (injured) and won't play. They both suffer from concussion symptoms. No word on when they will be back in the lineup.

The Edmonton Oilers current Man Games Lost is 297. Ouch!

- Don't forget to vote on the poll above this post. Your opinion matters to me. Please vote.

FINAL SCORE

St. Louis Blues - 2

Edmonton Oilers - 1

------------------

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

None -

------------------

BEERS

Dustin Penner - The big guy was pretty good tonight. He used his size well and made some great plays because of it.  Penner has been in a goal slump for awhile now and finally pots one. I can only imagine the relief he must have felt. He not only scored, but he also went 7W-2L for 78% on faceoffs. A few of those draws were must wins and he came through. This team needs more Dustin Penner's (when he's motivated). Good job tonight Pens, how about a cold one? Cheers!

Sam Gagner - The little guy had his foot on the gas pedal tonight. He was trying everything and even was throwing his pint sized body around. He picked up an assist on Penner's goal and that gives him 10 point in his last 12 games. He went 5W-3L for 63% on the dot and fired off 7 shots, but only 4 hit the net/goalie. I liked him tonight. I figure a frosty beer is in order. Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - For a guy that missed quite some time due to the "flu"", he was skating fast and doing all the little things right. The stats are not telling the truth on how he played. He was physical and determined. But id Brule wants to be a great NHL player, he needs to do that no matter how crappy your teammates are. Good game Brule. Cold Budweiser? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Sheldon Souray (I liked him. He played mean and finished his checks. When the Oilers needed a boost, he provided it.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He quietly played a good game. He had 3 shots and 4 blocked shots.), Mike Comrie (He played OK. I liked his fire when he dropped the gloves. He never ceases to surprise me.), Jeff Deslauriers (While he didn't get the win, he was pretty good. I don't have much to complain about him.)

------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - Just for losing again... Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): The 3rd Line (I really didn't care much for this line of Moreau, Horcoff and Pisani. While they weren't bad, they were the worst Oiler line of the night in my opinion.), JF Jacques (He had 4 hits and that's about it. He didn't agitate the Blues and he needs to do that to be effective. Hits are great, but they only get you so far.) Andrew Cogliano (From the 1st line to the 4th line just like that. He was average tonight and I'm sure it's not hard to do playing with Jacques and having limited ice time.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Basically if I was grading the game for the Cult of Hockey, anyone who wasn't in the Beers section would have received a 5 or a 4.  This game was a snoozefest for the first 40 minutes then the action picked up a little and I thought that this game would go to overtime. If the only Oilers could have only busted out with one more goal. *sigh* Gagner did came close.

Both Souray and Visnovsky were terrible with giveaways, but played well in my eyes. Go figure? Grebeshkov didn't make me yell so that's a good thing. Chorney and Strudwick did OK as well. I don't know. This team is strange. Is a win ever going to happen for the Oilers? This year? In 2010?
