A look into the UFA 'Center' position in Edmonton

Today we are going to look at potential Centre position players that could be brought in. We may just need that depth center position filled here in Edmonton OR could we trade Gagner potentially if he is asking for too high a price and sign a decent Centerman to replace him? Only time will tell for Oiler fans but in the meantime let's take a look at what is available on the Free Agent market for Centre's July 1/2013.

Elias, Patrik » 6'1 194 lbs

Ribeiro, Mike » 6'0 176 lbs

Connolly, Tim » 6'1 192 lbs

McDonald, Andy » 5'10 187 lbs

Antropov, Nik » 6'6 245

Roy, Derek » 5'9 187 lbs

Koivu, Saku » 5'10 181 lbs

Cullen, Matt » 6'1 194 lbs

Lombardi, Matthew » 5'11 194 lbs

Zubrus, Dainius » 6'5 225 lbs

Weiss, Stephen » 5'11 192 lbs

Malhotra, Manny » 6'2 216 lbs

Handzus, Michal » 6'5 216 lbs

Wellwood, Kyle » 5'11 185 lbs

Bozak, Tyler » 6'0 187 lbs

Reasoner, Marty » 6'0 190 lbs

Gordon, Boyd » 6'0 201 lbs

Hecht, Jochen » 6'1 192 lbs

Steckel, David » 6'5 223 lbs

Lapierre, Maxim » 6'2 220 lbs

Regin, Peter » 6'2 196 lbs

Halpern, Jeff » 6'0 203 lbs

Nichol, Scott » 5'8 179 lbs

Chipchura, Kyle » 6'2 209 lbs

Adams, Craig » 6'0 198 lbs

Hall, Adam » 6'3 205 lbs

Bolduc, Alexandre » 6'2 201 lbs

Of these players available, very few would be of interest to replace Gagner at center, so unless they can grab a top centerman in the NHL entry draft, very unlikely they let Gagner go unless they secretly plan to move Hall to the centre position. (I highly doubt they go that way). Take a look see at some possibilities here for that 4th line role behind Horcoff if he is not traded. Belanger's replacement is very likely going to be a faceoff winning centre who has speed to burn and is a big boy who can land a good hit.

I will discuss under comments some of my thoughts as too which players I like  or dislike.

A Trio Of Oilers Playing Nice With The Red Wings?

Shawn Horcoff and Corey Potter are in Detroit right now and while there, they are participating in an informal skate with the Detroit Red Wings to get their skating legs under them.

While this isn't big news or anything, cause its happening all over the league, I can only imagine the rumors that could start because of it. Eklund could eat this up.

"Horcoff and Potter are being scouted by the Wings! Trade imminent."

Haha! Oiler fans could only be so lucky.

The third Oiler is Nail Yakupov and is also skating with that crew but isn't in the picture below. I wonder how they are treating the 1st overall pick? Is he recognizable in Motor City? When is he coming back to Edmonton?

We all have our fingers crossed that the NHL season gets underway soon. Well it better! I don't know how much longer I can look at Potter with a Wings jersey on. Seriously... Horcoff didn't have an extra in his bag?

Bickering Amongst Teammates Leads To...

It's been reported that there was some bickering on the Oilers bench the other night. Captain Shawn Horcoff fully admitted this and it should be no surprise that this happened. Losing sucks. I'd be pissed off too.

The big question should be, who was doing the bickering and over what?

So many things went wrong during that game (and previous games), it would be hard to pin point it and where it started. I personally, hope it was the young guys on the team like Hall and Eberle that were giving the tongue lashing to the vets. I see it on so many different levels that the kids are going to sub plant the vets sooner rather than later as the leadership corps. For most of the veterans, their time here is almost up.

If it was the vets (like Horcoff, Belanger, Jones, etc) that had the beef with the kids, then I have an issue with that. If anybody with a decent amount of NHL experience on the team had the drive to win like Taylor Hall does, this team could make the playoffs now. But they don't.

On a couple of occasions we seen Hall try and make a save to try and stop an empty net goal. He was never successful in stopping the puck either time, but admiration from Oilers fans and alike grew. We seen right there how bad he wants to win. He'd do anything for the W. That screams leader to me. Give the kid a letter ASAP.

Then we have mr. clutch, Jordan Eberle. He wants to score the big goals. He wants the puck on his stick. He wants to win. Two more guys like him on the team and the Oilers are Stanley Cup champs. Forget mr. clutch. I'd love it if by next season he wore the C and we could officially call him Captain Clutch. He's that good.

But back to what I started with...

I sure do hope it was the kids chirping the vets. The kids are leading this team and they deserve respect. The vets IMO have no room to speak. They've as a collective unit, have sucked.

A new era isn't just coming, it's here.

A Real Wild One! The Oilers Lose In Fashion. Again

What a game that was!

I was absolutely blown away that this team lost yet another game after winning nearly the entire game. I'm not going to pick apart the game (there is enough blogs that do that already), but I am going to talk about what I liked.

- The kid line has been a thrill to watch. They buzz all over and created chances like no other. As they get older and wiser, these three are going to score at will. Oiler fans are lucky to have them wear the blue and orange.

- The crowd was buzzing right from the get go. Every play, every pass, they were on the edge of their seats and were loud. That was one of the best crowd responses I have heard in a long time. Well, except for the booing of Dany Heatley. That was rather annoying.

- Belanger and Horcoff were once again studs on the faceoffs. Horcoff was 50% and Belanger was 67%. Lander was also pretty good too at 46%.

- Andy Sutton and Ladislav Smid had 4 hits each. Big bodies banging the opposition is never a bad thing.

- Paajarvi, Smyth and Eberle each took 4 shots on goal.

- Ryan Jones scored the only goal for the Oil and was setup by Ryan Smyth. Beauty pass for a nice tip in goal or as I called it, 'the give and flow'. I didn't think those two would have chemistry. I was wrong. Now only if they could convince Horcoff to grow a mullet.

- Smid blocked 5 shots. FIVE! That was the team high tonight.

-Horcoff was a takeaway machine. He did it three times.

- Anton Lander impressed me. He took a beating and kept on going. He was on his game for sure. He played like he wants to stay.

MY STARS OF THE GAME

Ladislav Smid
Ryan Smyth
Nik Khabibulin (up until the tying goal)
Tom Gilbert

Shawn Horcoff Named Captain of Edmonton Oilers

As per the Oilers twitter account, the Edmonton Oilers have named Shawn Horcoff as the new captain.

Like I figured a month ago, Horcoff was the obvious choice.

Good for Shawn!

PS: I still would have liked Sam Gagner to have it, but I'm cool with Horcoff.

Ales Hemsky, The A or Not the A?

I kind of started to pipe off today (what's new) on twitter about who deserves to wear a letter this year for the Oilers. Steve Tambellini said today on the team 1260 that there will be a captain this season. So why not start some speculation?

So...

I started thinking about the current roster and really, you can hate Horcoff's contract all you want, but you can't hate his work ethics. He does give it his all and he never quits. He is IMO the best veteran guy to help these kids grow. Shawn Horcoff is going to be an Oiler for a few more years and I can see Tom Renney going with a solid all around guy like Horcoff to lead this team. He wouldn't be a bad choice at all. He's the logical choice.

But the fan in me screams Gagner. I think it would be a good choice to pick Sam Gagner as the captain this year, right now. The Oilers are a rebuilding team and this is the first year of many (hopefully only two years till this is a playoff team) and why not have him "grow" into this much like Towes is doing n Chicago. I know that they are two complete different payers and I am not comparing them to each other. I was just comparing the ages. I think if you let Sam learn on the job so to speak he will be a great captain for the Oilers. I know a lot of you think I'm nuts for saying that but I really do think Gagner is going to be the leader of this young squad now, and into the future. So why beat around the bush?

As much as I think that's a great idea to pick Sam (I'm sure it won't happen, no need to worry), I'm going all in on Horcoff with the C.

I said on twitter today that Horcoff should get the C and Penner, Whitney and Gagner should wear an A this year. Just a guess. Purely me taking a shot in the dark.

I'm not a fan of the four assistants rotation, I like just two or three A's that are permanent. Maybe I'm just too old school, but I didn't like that four guy rotation. It was 2 home assistants and 2 road assistants.

A few of my tweeps reminded me that I forgot Hemmer when I made my comment.

I had this to say about it. I said, "I did forget Hemsky for an A. But does he really need/deserve it? He's not a leader on the team so why give him the A?" Then I continued with, "I am talking about helping the guy next to you type of leadership. Yes he's a good player and he puts up the points. But he's not "the let me help you leadership kind of guy". Unless he blows my mind this year, I'm ready to move on."

Bruce McCurdy from Copper & Blue replied to me with this about Hemsky, "Maybe Ales needs to feel like he's a leader on this team. I'd give him an A for sure."

My answer to that was, "If giving an A to Hemsky is solely for the purpose of making him feel good, then it's a waste of a letter. It means nothing."

Bruce once again countered with, "No, it's more than making him feel good. It's expectation and responsibility and a vote of confidence all in one."

Damn. I can't argue with that at all. Bruce is right. It is what it is. Hemsky is that kind of player. It doesn't matter how I feel about giving out letters to players that don't really lead a team, he is at this moment, an Edmonton Oiler. And if we want him to try his ass off and play his best, having an A on his jersey might just do that.

So I'm torn. Do you appease Hemsky and sew on another assistant captains letter A on his jersey to make him feel wanted, needed and like he's important to the team?

Or do you not give it to him at all and let the real team leaders lead like Horcoff, Penner, Whitney and Gagner have it with no rotation and take Hemsky for what he is? With no A.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Linus Omark was signed to a two year, two way deal with the Oilers today. He is just another smurf so I'm curious on how his training camp is going to be. The jury is still out on whether this is good or bad news.

- Moreau scores a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0. But wait, hold the phone. Moreau scores again. His first 2 goal game this year. Wow! By the last few frames of the game, Moreau has had a few good chances as everyone is feeding him for the hat trick. It's more than evident by his 7 shots on goal. Finally the captain shows the team how to lead.

- Devan Dubnyk played a heck of a game and gets to the number 3 in the win column. It wasn't show stopping, but he got the job done. It's been a fun year (hypothetically speaking) to watch him grow and get better.

- Wow! Dean Arsene sure can hit a guy. Boom! But... he can't fight worth a crap. If he could learn to fight better, I'd really push for him to be on the team next season.

- Dustin Penner was good again tonight. (maybe Quinn should scratch out O'Sullivan's eye?) He scores his 30th goal (and 31st) of the season. He's the first since Ryan Smyth did it. *runs and cries because I still miss Smitty*

- Shawn Horcoff had a good game. He picked up two assists and was pretty good at both ends of the ice.

- The Whitney/Gilbert machine was working well tonight. Gilbert even picked up a few more assists for his season points total.

- Taylor Chorney played really good. The rookie did well. He picked up an assist and he was +2. Maybe one of his best games as an Oiler.

- Ryan Potulny was back in tonight and he played a very solid game. He was 80% on faceoffs, he had 2 assists, and in my opinion, one of the best Oiler players tonight. Potsy is a keeper.

- Andrew Cogliano has really changed these last few games. I think it's the fact that he now gets to be a go to guy. With all the injuries to the team, he's getting his chance to shine. He was +1 tonight.

- Fernando Pisani led the team with 4 hits. I'm going to miss him next year.

The Not So Good:

- The team was good. No need to bitch.

BEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - He fought hard for a shutout and was awesome. Watching him beat Marty Brodeur made me remember why I wasn't sad about him getting pulled at the Olympics. JDD was lucky at times, but for the most part made good on his end while the team managed to score twice. Good job Jeff. How about a Bud? Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - His grit and passion came out in every game he plays. He is always trying to do something out there. He was in the right place at the right time for his goal and it was all because of the way that line worked together. Brule was a factor in this game. Is it frosty mug time? Cheers!

Sam Gagner - He was also a big reason why his line was clicking. Gagner had himself another solid game and he wasn't even on the top line. He had 3 shots and picked up an assist on the Pouliot goal. Good job Sammy. How about a cold Kokanee? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Mike Comrie (He quietly plays a great game often. Like tonight), Ryan Whitney (His passing is really good. He's also a big guy that can skate well. He may just make me eat my words.), Marc Pouliot (He scored the Oilers 2nd goal and played a pretty decent game.), Taylor Chorney (He was +2 and played good. This playing time that he's getting now is great for him. Next season can't come soon enough.), Jason Strudwick (He went from #7 guy, to #3/4 guy. Wow! He played good tonight and was +2.), Shawn Horcoff (Good game from Horcoff. He managed to look not useless.), Aaron Johnson (He's another guy that will make me eat my words. He's better than I thought.),

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Great game by the Oilers. I was happy to see JDD get the shutout and I was happy to see the crowd enjoy themselves. But STOP losing guys. The dive for five needs to keep on course. I keep hoping these guys don't do any late season runs. That's the last thing the fans need right now. To finish 10th in the West. Oy!

Paq Twinn - He had some technical troubles. He watched the game, but can't report on it just yet. Stay tuned.

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? OK. It came down to the Oilers skating on the ice for Quinn to decide. Stortini sits out and Gagner has flown home to have his knee checked out. So means that Nilsson and Brule are back in the lineup after sitting for a few games. Staios and Smid are back in and Chorney and Plante have been sent back down to Springfield.

- If I'm not mistaken, the Oilers are going to announce that the Oilers new farm team will be in Oklahoma City next season. Thanks Springfield Falcons, it's been a slice.

------------------
BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - It was a blowout. A bad penalty wasn't going to change anything.

------------------

BEERS

None - They were that bad.

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Gilbert Brule (I liked his hustle and drive tonight. He tried to prove Quinn wrong.), Dustin Penner (He was the only Oiler at +1. He also scored the only Oiler goal.), Ryan Potulny (He also played with some jam. He had 5 shots and was 58% on faceoffs.), Ladislav Smid (He played a pretty decent game. He had 2 shots and 2 blocked shots.), Robert Nilsson (He was not very flashy, but he had 6 shots on net. He also picked up the assist on the Penner goal.), Tom Gilbert (I have liked Gibby's game for a while now. He's been the most consistent Oiler on the back end lately.)

------------------

JEERS

Shawn Horcoff - Man was he terrible. Error after error. It was just embarrassing to watch these 3rd line guys. When you talk about an epic fail, talk Shawn Horcoff. Booooo!

Ethan Moreau - Tied with Staios for a team worst -4. ~Sweet!~ Boooooo!

Steve Staios - He was cause for a few of the Coyotes goals tonight. He was just plain bad. Not a great first game back. He was tied for a team worst with -4 and he had no hits and only one blocked shot. Boooooo!

Jeff Deslauriers - Wow did he suck. Soft goals looked even softer against him tonight. Games like these don't help the GAA. Jeff looked bad and probably would be the first to admit it. Good try, but Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Fernando Pisani (He was lumped on a bad line with two bad hockey players. It seems to be soaking into Pisani. He wasn't very good tonight either.), Jason Strudwick (While I don't put a lot of blame on him - he has very little skill - he was brutal tonight. He did drop the gloves though, but was beat),

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Wow that was painful to watch. Even more than the other bad losses lately. The Twitterland was full of pissed off people. (check the TweetCast recap box above) It gets harder to be positive for these guys. It gets harder to believe that Pat Quinn is the right guy for this job. It gets harder to just simply turn on the TV. But I do it. I love this team - well, not the current one - and I'm here for everything, good or bad. I'm here for that blue and orange logo. I'm here for the oil drop. But most of all... I'm here for the hardcore and best hockey fans ever. The Edmonton Oiler fans kick ass and we deserve better. You deserve better. Patience I guess.

- Who's Out? Who's in? Same lines as last game.  Chorney and O'Marra have been sent back down to Springfield as they are not being used here with the Oilers.

- As I tweeted earlier, Springfield Falcon Kip Brennan is the AHL leader in penalty minutes.  After 27 games he has 137 pim.  I guess this is why the Oilers didn't re-claim Steve MacIntyre a few days ago.

------------------

BEERS

Lubomir Visnovsky - He is crazy good this guy.  He picks up both assists on the Oilers only two goal in regulation time.  He can do anything.  He has clearly been our best player since day 1 of the season.  His great play just rubs off on Smid.  If there is anything to complain about, he needs to shoot more.  He has a great shot and it's evident as he is one of the best defencemen in the league in goals.  Super good game!  Feel like a tall glass of Heineken? Cheers!

Ladislav Smid - He just keeps rolling along.  He now has two points in two games.  The streak is alive!!!  He played really good again tonight.  He had an assist and 3 hits.  The guy just keeps on impressing me.  What's next?  Maybe he should get a shot at the shootout?  For another solid game, enjoy a Black Label. Mmmm... thick. Cheers!

Jeff Deslauriers - A winner of three games in a row.  Since his poop in the bed game, he's been on fire.  He's playing like he thinks he can.  He's damn good.  Do I sound surprised?  It's because I am.  He's exceeded everything that I have expected from him.  It just goes to show that he needs to play more than once every two weeks.  He needs games to stay sharp.  He made big saves and kept the Oilers in this game.  Great job Jeff.  Frosty Budweiser?  Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Shawn Horcoff (He scores his second shootout game winner in a row.  He played well tonight. He played like a leader.), Ethan Moreau (Played a pretty flawless game. 4 shots, 3 hits and 2 blocked shots.), Gilbert Brule (He played with passion tonight and had 4 good hits. He's bustin' his hump and deserves the shot on the 1st line.), Dustin Penner (The big guy had a pretty good game.  He screened well, and picked up a goal from a Visnovsky shot.  He continues to get points.),  Sheldon Souray (He was a mean beast tonight.  He had some great hits and played a pretty responsible game.  He needs to shoot more.), Robert Nilsson (He continues to impress me since his return.  He picked up an assist tonight.)

------------------

JEERS

Jason Strudwick & Steve Staios - This pairing sucks.  I can not wait until Grebeshkov comes back (he started skating with the team today).  Strudwick is a terrible player.  I know... I've said it before, but it's true.  He's terrible.  The only stat he had was 2 blocked shots.  *throws arms up in the air* And Staios... he's just starting to become Strudwick II.  How they were given that much ice time is beyond me.  Especially late in the 3rd and those two are out there.  Scary stuff.  Please Quinn... let these guys go. Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): None

-------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - You guys are supposed to suck.  It's hard to hate a guy who's good.

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - Same with Bobby.  I need to boo people.  Your not helping the situation.

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - I though that it was a boring game to watch at times.  It's never fun to watch a game that's dry. There was times that had me on edge but they didn't last long.  I liked that the Oilers didn't make a whole lot of mistakes.  I really dislike the Staios/Strudwick pairing.  Grebs can't come back fast enough.  I liked that the 1st line actually put in a solid effort tonight and that they didn't just rely on everyone else to pick up the slack.  I also liked how JDD is still looking sharp.  Take you time Habbi, no need to rush back.  All in all I'm a happy guy now that the Oilers have 3 game winning streak on the go.  No more avoiding the fLame fans at work.  Good Job Boys!

Paq Twinn - Well if you said the Oilers would win 3 games on this road trip, I would have said you're CRAZY. *Wipes pie off of face* Guess I was wrong. Another good game tonight from the Oilers. Lubo was awesome tonight, and even my goat pick, Nilsson, looked good. I don't know what to think about this team, one day they suck real
ly bad and the next thing you know, they roll off 3 wins on the road with solid efforts. Will the real Oilers please stand up. I am still of the belief this team needs some personnel changes but I'll take the win, I guess. *waves bye bye to Taylor Hall*

This team still needs to learn how to play for 20 min periods, they're still giving fans and myself heart attacks in the finals seconds of periods. JDD played solid, made some big saves tonight. The goals that got by him were pure fluke, one off Gilbert's skate, the other off Staios' leg. Pretty much everyone did thier job tonight and the Oil need that to win on a consistant basis. Game Grade: B

BEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - He records his 1st ever NHL shutout.  He was brilliant tonight.  He made huge saves and looked good handling the puck.  He really stepped up his game tonight and it was much needed.  He made 36 saves and if anyone is thirsty, it would be Jeff.  Frosty mug of Bud for the game breaker?  Cheers!

Sheldon Souray -He scores a lucky goal and picks up a well earned assist on the Horcoff goal.  I'd have to say he also stepped up for this game.  Maybe the Quinn talk is going to pay off after all.  Souray was dominant tonight and really played a tough and solid game.  He deserves a cold Stella. Cheers!

Ales Hemsky - He played really well tonight.  He never gave up and was flashy all night.  His goal was a nice deke from a nice pass from Penner.  I thought that it was cool for the fans at the game to see him score this goal as it is his 100th career NHL goal. This is the Hemsky that made me like the cut of his jib. Glad he's back.  A frosty beer Hemmer? Cheers!

Shawn Horcoff - He played a great game despite not being able to take many faceoffs (0W-2L=0%).  He scores with a nice tip in form a Souray shot and gets an assist on the Souray goal.  Horcoff did all the little things right tonight and was rewarded by the hockey gods with some points.  It's Miller Time... Cheers!

Ethan Moreau -  I hate to even say it but he was pretty good.  He also took notice of what Quinn had to say and he showed it tonight.  He didn't take a BTP (o hits in the game is probably why) and he actually got some minutes throughout the entire game.  Go figure huh? The Captain even scores the game winner by scoring the 1st goal of the game. An amazing night so have an amazing beer.   Mmmmm... Pilsner. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Ryan Potulny (He played a good game and picked up an assist and some extra minutes.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He plays solid and picks up 2 assists.  He responded well tonight and was a team best +2.), Dustin Penner (He was screening and winning faceoffs.  This guy can do anything this year.), Gilbert Brule (He plays so consistant this season.  He picks up an assist and had 2 hits.), Ladislav Smid (The mistakes from last game are long gone.  He played solid and was a +1 and I've allready forgoten about last game.), Sam Gagner (He played well but was more ivisable than his two linemates.), Andrew Cogliano (Had a real good game with Moreau and Potulny.  He just needs to play his own game and the points will start flowing.)

------------------

JEERS

None -

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Jason Strudwick (If not for the 4 blocked shots, all you would have is 4 giveaways to show for your game.  +1 or not, you need to be better even though I know you can't.)

-------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - He played well.  Damn goats! *shakes fist*

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - He didn't play again. *dances jig*

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - That was a great game to watch.  It was exciting with all the goals but was a little nerve racking when the Oilers were stinking it up in the 3rd.  JDD played great and the Oilers really needed that from him tonight.  Talk about a confidance booster... 1st career shutout.  I ended up liking the line changes that Quinn did.  Man is Penner great so far this year.  He blows my mind.  Faceoffs, shots, hits,  you name it.  The dude can do it.  The best part of the game is that it was a PPV and the Oilers actually do something great.  What a way to start off the week.  GOILERS!

Paq Twinn - Much better game from the Oil tonight, for the most part anyway. Played a great opening 20 min. Then played well enough to keep the 2nd scoreless, until Horc scores with .1 second remaining...again. This time it counted. After getting a late goal like that you'd think they would come out like gangbusters in the 3rd...WRONG! The Oilers hung JDD out to dry, the kid shut the door though. JDD was phenomenal in the 3rd, may have won the game cause the rest of the team were just a bunch oif headless chickens. With all of this in mind, a win is a win. GOILERS! Game Grade: B
