Oilers + News & Rumors **UPDATED**

First off, I would like to congratulate the Oilers on being swept by Calgary Flames... This was the first time a Battle of Alberta season series has been swept by either team. The Oilers suffered yet another big blow (because you haven't suffered enough already) as Sheldon Souray broke his hand in a fight last night with Jarome Iginla. This lowers Souray's chances of being traded.

Jonas Hiller - In other news, the Anaheim Ducks have re-signed Goaltender Jonas Hiller to a 4 year deal earning him 4.5 million per season / 18 million total. This obviously means Anaheim has moved on from Giggy as the starting goaltender. They will have him as a 6 million dollar backup unless somehow they can move his salary.

Leafs - Leafs GM Brian Burke is holding a press conference at 11:30 AM eastern on leafs TV, it will likely be a trade for J.S Giguere from Anaheim. It may not be the only move done today by the Leafs says Darren Dreger of TSN on his twitter " Could be multi-deal, multi-player. Big makeover...if all comes together for Toronto. My blackberry may blow!"

Update - This from Darren Dreger "Something enormous is about to go down. Working on it."

Update # 2 - From Darren Dreger " Phaneuf to the Leafs"

Update # 3 - It seems as leafs will get Giggy, Phaneuf and Sjostrom

Update # 4 - Stajan and White are involved.

To Flames: Stajan, White, Hagman, Mayers

To Leafs: Sjostrom, Phaneuf, Keith Aullie (AHL Defenseman)

Update # 5 - Another deal in next 30 minutes says Brian Burke.

Update # 6 - Marlies Forwards and Sjostrom will fill in vacant Forward spots on Leafs.

Update # 7 - Burke says sit tight we should be back soon.

Update # 8 - It looks like Finger and Toskala for Giguere and a 1st round pick.

Update # 9 - It may be Exelby instead of Finger or Blake.

Update #10 - The Ducks want to send a player, Leafs want 1st.

Update # 11 - Darren Dreger says Toskala and Blake for Giggy done deal.
As always, all comments are welcome.

Kotalik done as a Ranger? - According to Larry Brooks of the NY Post Ales Kotalik has been told he will be traded and has left the team.

Update from Larry Brooks "Rangers tentaive deal to move Kotalik fell through due to complications, per NYR."

B&J #111 / Battle of Alberta / Oilers vs Flames (1/30/10)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? O'Sullivan draws back in and Comrie sits out with Stortini. Other than that, the lines stay the same. Dubnyk will start in goal and will try to get his first win.

- On this wonderful Hockey Day In Canada, we get to watch a Battle of the Losers. Both teams are on losing streaks (Oilers 12 and Flames 9) and one team will end it after this game is over. Spoiler alert: It wasn't the Oilers. They were killed.

- This is the first time in The Edmonton Oilers history that they have lost all the regular season games to the Flames. They have never been swept before and this is a shitty record to break. This is another low point for this storied franchise and it may just get worse yet. This season may go down as the worst season ever for the Edmonton Oilers. How sad is that?

- Why wouldn't they have the Oilers play in a set of Vintage Oilers white/orange & blue uniforms to play against Calgary and their Vintage uniforms? It would have looked good. I miss the 80's...

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - I know... surprise! And yes, Moreau played. *shrugs shoulders*

------------------

BEERS

None - The score was 6-1. No Beers For You!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Sam Gagner (He scored the Oilers only goal and continues his point streak. He even busted out a spin-o-rama tonight. He's was trying out there. He took a both teams high, 6 shots. It was reported that he even stopped in front of the Flames bench and challenged them. That's BALLS!), Dustin Penner (He wasn't great by no means. He was average at best. But he was the only guy with an even on +/-.), Ryan Potulny (He once again played hard. He's earning his spot. With 4 shots and 2 blocked shots, he's at least trying to win.), Lubomir Visnovsky (A game where he wasn't credited with a giveaway. He played pretty decent and finished -1. He had 2 takeaways and 2 blocked shots.), Andrew Cogliano (He played OK. He had a smokin' good chance in the 3rd where he burned everyone but Kipper snagged it with the glove.)

------------------

JEERS

Denis Grebeshkov - His brutal giveaways continued tonight. He was horrible to watch and he struggled all night. Brian McGrattan even burned him on a play. Embarrassing. To those people that would rather trade Gilbert over Grebeshkov, please reconsider. Gilbert is never this bad. Time to let this guy go. Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Sheldon Souray (Took the 5 on 3 penalty and that was the PP goal more or less sealed the deal on this game. As a highlight, he did however fight Iginla in a spirited fight. It was well overdue and I wondered if Iginla would ever man up and fight Souray. ***Souray fractured his hand on Iggy's face in that fight. It was confirmed by Pat Quinn after the game was over.***), Devan Dubnyk (He was hung out to dry a lot tonight. Some goals he had no chance and others he could/should have saved those. I like Dubey, but tonight, he wasn't very good.), Moreau/Horcoff/Pisani (This line sucked. They didn't seen to be effective at all. All three were bad.)

------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - What a good day, yet such a shitty ending to it. It was Hockey Day In Canada and I spent it with my family. We watched hockey, played mini sticks and watched some more hockey. The Oilers losing all the regular season games to the Flames is the first time in Oilers history that that has happened. That's a sad record to give up.  Reading the comments on Twitter, it's clear the fans care a lot less about this team now. And how can anyone blame them. It's really hard to watch this. Do I pay for the PPV next game? I know it's not worth it but I don't miss games. Sometimes this team pisses me off. And this is one of those times.

Paq Twinn - fLames won SIX to ONE. Season Series- fLames SIX, Oilers ZERO. Nuff said. Game Grade: F

For Heavens Sakes, What Is Wrong With the Oilers?

As my first official post on Oilers Jambalaya, I will discuss what all Oilers fans have been scratching their heads about since the end of November: the struggles, and why they are happening.

First of all, the struggle is obvious. Being able to finish the job. Countless times over the past few months have the Oilers had the lead (sometimes by multiple goals), or have been tied in the third period. But hey, they've got the lead, so who cares? They're just going to sit back and let the goalies do all the work because they have definitely won the game already. That is what seems to be the mentality right now. Prime examples of this were one, against the very offensive minded Washington Capitals, and two, against THE DEFENDING STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS Pittsburgh Penguins. The Oilers, if I'm not mistaken, had shut out, and shut down Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals, and had a 2-0 lead up until the third period. But hey, they're going to win, because they have the lead. Except, not. They lost. And the same thing happened against PIT.

So, why is this happening? We have many excuses, with the injuries and etc. But, quite frankly, I do not know. and I don't think anyone knows for sure; heck, I don't even think the players know! But, I mean someone could assume what the problem is, they are just giving up in the third. That's it. Plain and simple. Not to mention, they haven't received the best effort in goal, IMO. Injuries are not an excuse to lose 12 games in a row. But, it depends on what you think. If any fans want to believe that injuries are the true problem to this disaster, that's fine. For all those who want answers, I guess what I am trying to say is they are few, if not none. But, if the Oilers snap this skid tonight against the Flames, their fans are going to be very angry, and that's how we like it ;)

GOILERS!

Another "Get That Guy Fired" Rally Is In The Works

Well the smell of a "Get Someone Fired" rally is starting to stink in the hockey world once again. No, not in Edmonton again, well not yet anyways.

It seems that our dear old friend and former Oiler main man and current General Manager for the New York Rangers, Glen Sather is really feeling some fan backlash from their own New York Rangers fans. It appears that they want him fired from his job and they are prepared to rally as a group to support it.

With the Rangers sitting at GP54  W24  L23  OTLPTS55 and are -as of this writing - sitting in 9th. Compared to the Oilers, it's not that bad. They are a win away from being back in the playoffs and they are tied with 4 other teams with 55 points, so really, is it that bad?

Ranger fans would say yes.

So how do you get your message out? Have a rally. So what/where/when the hell is this rally you say? Here is the Facebook page for the Rally and here is the petition to sign if you want Glen Sather fired.

If you are lazy, here is what the Facebook Group page says about Glen Sather;

"Tired of Mismanagement, Bad Contracts, being mired in Mediocrity and a lack of results? Come down to Madison Square Garden before the Rangers– Sabres game, join the rally, and let Mr. Jim Dolan know that you want Glen Sather FIRED immediately!!!!!!"

Again, if you are lazy, here is what the Petition says about Glen Sather to James Dolan;

"Dear James Dolan,

For the past 10 years, loyal Rangers fans around the world have watched our beloved team go nowhere due to the leadership of the clubs President and General Manager, Glen Sather. Our franchise has been in a state of disarray for 10+ years, and there is no end in sight. This here petition is being signed by Rangers fans around the globe who are asking you to remove Mr. Sather from his job, and to replace him with someone who will restore our hockey club to the top of the NHL with hopes that we will become Stanley Cup Champions. This petition is being signed by people who want Glen Sather removed whether they are attending the rally March 7th outside Madison Square Garden or not. Remove him please James!

Yours Truly,
Loyal Rangers fans around the globe."

Geez that sounds like the same way he left the Oilers before going to New York, isn't it?

Below are the details for the proposed Rally if you want to attend in person;
When: Sunday, March 7, 2010
Time: 5:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: The Steps Outside Madison Square Garden
Street: 1 Penn Plaza
City/Town: New York, NY

Now with a payroll of $56.6 million and sitting in 9th in the East - possibly 11th or 7th - that isn't a great way to appease your fans. Nevermind the fact that this is New York, and they are quite familiar with the game of hockey and can't be fooled into thinking the NYR have a good product on the ice. They don't.

It's crazy to think that he was the same guy that built, molded and taught that great 80's Oiler squad to 5 Stanley Cups and now he may become jobless. I suppose he could move up in the NYR organization and out of the limelight. Would that make the NYR fans happy? Probably not. I'm sure they just want him gone, period.

Good luck to those organizing and attending this rally. I applaud your efforts, yet wonder if it's worth it? Does James Dolan actually pull the plug on Slats? Do the NYR fans actually get their way? I guess we will see how this unfolds in March after the petition and rally.

Let's just hope for their sake, that they get more than the 7 angry fans that showed up for the failed Fire MacT Rally in Edmonton. They had over 10,000 people sign up on Facebook much like the Ranger fans are doing and 7 guys showed up. That's it. Not really an impact statement.

If I was the organizer of the NYR rally, I wouldn't get my hopes up that people will actually show up. I guess you can always hope, but good luck anyways.

On a side note: I wouldn't be willing to bet that Katz considers bringing Slats back to Edmonton. I think it's possible, but unlikely. *shudders at the thought*

Oil Change Underway

Mike Comrie - According to Larry Brooks of the NY Post,  the New York Rangers are more than just one piece away from being Stanley Cup contenders, he suggests the Rangers could use a few players but don't expect Phaneuf or Kovalchuk. Sather needs to let the team play it out. If he wants to make a move, maybe acquiring a Centre like Comrie for a small price would be worth a shot. If this is the case Mike would likely play on line 1 with Marion Gaborik.

Bobby Ryan -  Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com suggests that Ducks GM Bob Murray will not trade Bobby Ryan and is confident they can get him re-signed.

Petr Sykora - The Minnesota Wild sent Petr Sykora down to there farm team however, Petr did not report and both sides have agreed to terminate Petr's contract and let him become a UFA.

UPDATE: The Anaheim Ducks have re-signed Goaltender Jonas Hiller to a 4 year deal worth 18 mil/ 4.5 a season.

As always all comments are welcome.

Daily Dose (Rumors and Oilers talk)

Quick question Oiler nation, who is your favourite Oiler? Please comment your answer.

Oilers notes: Oilers fans, guess what? Your next game is against the Calgary Flames, so someone will pick up 2 points. Just imagine what the Flames would feel like if they continued their losing streak with a loss against the Oilers. You know, the team that hasn't won a game in 2010? Maybe Lubomir will pull off something like this again Goal against the Flames.

Lubomir Visnovsky - According to Graig Woodburn of Weei.com sports radio network the Boston Bruins are not willing to give the Thrashers what they want for Kovalchuk so they will pursue players like Alexei Ponikarovsky, Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen, and Lubomir Visnovsky instead.

Ilya Kovalchuk - According to Bob Mckenzie of TSN, he stated the the LA Kings are the front runners for Ilya Kovalchuk. Also, NHL Analyst Steve Kouleas was having a chat with Puck Daddy on the score television network and Steve suggested that if the Kings were to acquire Kovalchuk they would have to give up something like Alex Frolov, Jack Johnson, a young roster player/prospect and a 1st round draft choice like I suggested yesterday.

Ray Whitney - According to Darren Dreger of TSN, Ray Whitney may be the most sought after player in the NHL. If what Darren said is true, up to 10 teams have interest. He suggested the LA Kings, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators all have interest just to name a few.

Ethan Moreau - Whoever stated that 5 to 10 teams are interested in Ethan Moreau is full of crap.  Maybe a team or 2, but based on how he has played as of late, I can see why not many teams are interested.

Update on Moreau - I have seen rumors on various sites that the Ducks like Souray...well now it seems they are one of the few teams that like Moreau as well. We will have to wait and see how this all pans out. Moreau is currently a team worse -29 on beers and jeers points done by Smokin' Ray.

As always all comments are welcome!

Beers & Jeers #110 / Oilers Game Recap vs St. Louis Blues (1/28/10)

Who's in? Mike Comrie and Gilbert Brule will draw back into the lineup tonight which means that two need to sit. Stortini and O'Sullivan drew the short straws for tonight. The lines have changes slightly from last game. Staios and Smid are still out (injured) and won't play. They both suffer from concussion symptoms. No word on when they will be back in the lineup.

The Edmonton Oilers current Man Games Lost is 297. Ouch!

- Don't forget to vote on the poll above this post. Your opinion matters to me. Please vote.

BAD TIMING PENALTY

BEERS

Dustin Penner - The big guy was pretty good tonight. He used his size well and made some great plays because of it.  Penner has been in a goal slump for awhile now and finally pots one. I can only imagine the relief he must have felt. He not only scored, but he also went 7W-2L for 78% on faceoffs. A few of those draws were must wins and he came through. This team needs more Dustin Penner's (when he's motivated). Good job tonight Pens, how about a cold one? Cheers!

Sam Gagner - The little guy had his foot on the gas pedal tonight. He was trying everything and even was throwing his pint sized body around. He picked up an assist on Penner's goal and that gives him 10 point in his last 12 games. He went 5W-3L for 63% on the dot and fired off 7 shots, but only 4 hit the net/goalie. I liked him tonight. I figure a frosty beer is in order. Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - For a guy that missed quite some time due to the "flu"", he was skating fast and doing all the little things right. The stats are not telling the truth on how he played. He was physical and determined. But id Brule wants to be a great NHL player, he needs to do that no matter how crappy your teammates are. Good game Brule. Cold Budweiser? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Sheldon Souray (I liked him. He played mean and finished his checks. When the Oilers needed a boost, he provided it.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He quietly played a good game. He had 3 shots and 4 blocked shots.), Mike Comrie (He played OK. I liked his fire when he dropped the gloves. He never ceases to surprise me.), Jeff Deslauriers (While he didn't get the win, he was pretty good. I don't have much to complain about him.)

------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - Just for losing again... Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): The 3rd Line (I really didn't care much for this line of Moreau, Horcoff and Pisani. While they weren't bad, they were the worst Oiler line of the night in my opinion.), JF Jacques (He had 4 hits and that's about it. He didn't agitate the Blues and he needs to do that to be effective. Hits are great, but they only get you so far.) Andrew Cogliano (From the 1st line to the 4th line just like that. He was average tonight and I'm sure it's not hard to do playing with Jacques and having limited ice time.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Basically if I was grading the game for the Cult of Hockey, anyone who wasn't in the Beers section would have received a 5 or a 4.  This game was a snoozefest for the first 40 minutes then the action picked up a little and I thought that this game would go to overtime. If the only Oilers could have only busted out with one more goal. *sigh* Gagner did came close.

Both Souray and Visnovsky were terrible with giveaways, but played well in my eyes. Go figure? Grebeshkov didn't make me yell so that's a good thing. Chorney and Strudwick did OK as well. I don't know. This team is strange. Is a win ever going to happen for the Oilers? This year? In 2010?

Is this the Year?

Is this the year the Oilers get the number one overall draft pick? Is this the year Big Sexy leaves town? Is this the year Tambellini makes a trade? Is this the year that Moreau is traded for a bag of pucks? Is this the year the Oilers WIN?

Yes it's been a shit of a year so far. No wins. Winless in 2010. It actually has a nice ring to it. The Oilers have won only one game in their past 19. Carolina has finally past them, leaving the Oilers in the 30th spot. Yes folks, we are the worst team in the NHL. Yes, we're number one, we're number one!!

St. Louis is in town tonight and I have a decent feeling about tonight's game. St. Louis are only 5 pts out of the playoffs and have gone 6-3-1 in their last ten games but this is a doable game. Oilers have played better in the past week and the walking dead (Comrie and Brule) will suit up tonight. But do we want them to win? Heart vs head: win or dive? My heart says no bloody way will I cheer for my Oilers to lose but my head says that the Oilers need to rebuild and getting a high draft pick is essential. Heart vs head people. These are hard days in Oil Country.

Lastly, this is my first post on Oilers Jambalaya and I'd like to thank you for the invite to post on this blog.

GOILERS!

Updates on Kovalchuk, Visnovsky, Souray, Phaneuf and Whitney

Kovalchuk - I still believe he will end up in a Kings uniform. Like I said yesterday, it would take something like Frolov, Johnson a top prospect/1st round pick. However, the Boston Bruins may be willing to make a push as long as it does not involve the Leafs 1st round draft pick and Tuuka Rask.

Visnovsky - This guy would be a great add for anyone. He plays solid Defense, but his real upside is Offense, this guy is so talented. When Lubomir wants to score he is going to score and he can make the players look foolish doing it. I personally would love to see Lubomir in a Devils uniform as long as we don't give up to much. Other possible suitors are the Sabres, Coyotes, and Avalanche.

Souray - He is another guy who can just bomb it from the point. His Defense is average, but like Lubomir, his real upside is Offense. This guy has one of the hardest shots in the league and instantly adds another demension to your Powerplay. Some possible suitors are the Sabres, Devils, Coyotes, Avalanche, Ducks, Sharks, and Kings.

Dion Phaneuf  - According to one of our Flames bloggers the New Jersey Devils are leading the way for Dion Phaneuf, we have no names on who may be sent the other way but I would guess a top 6 Forward, a Defenseman and a 1st/2nd round draft choice would be going to Calgary.

Ray Whitney - 8 to 10 teams are interested in Ray Whitney's services, he is a good top 6 Forward at a reasonable salary, I have heard the Senators, Bruins, Kings, Flames, Ducks, Canadiens, and Devils all have interest.

According to Tarik El-Bashir  "Braden Holtby has been sent back to Hershey. So that means Jose Theodore is ready to return (at least as a backup) tomorrow."

As always all comments are welcome.

BEERS

Ryan Potulny - He played a good game. When most of the Oilers looked like they were drowning in the deep end, Potulny wasn't. His goal wasn't sweet by any means, but it was a goal. Great game Potsy! How about a cold one? Cheers!

Andrew Cogliano - I liked Cogliano in this game. He has shown that he has the ability to be a gret player. Last night and the other games he's played with Gagner, he's been good. That's what happens when you move him off a line with slugs. Good stuff Cogs. I like it. How about a frosty beer? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Sam Gagner (I liked Gagner. He was an offensive master. He didn't score but had/created some great chances.),

------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - Wow! Another loss. Surpised? No. Booooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): none

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Grebeshkov was the worst Oiler by a long shot. His relapse into complete stupid mode was funny, yet very embarrasing. If you watched the game, you would have seen how bad he actually was. Horcoff was another bad Oiler. What is going on with this guy? Dustin Penner played with two guys who were flying and he looked like a guy with a piano tied to his ass. How is this possible when you are the #1 go to guy on this team? Since the Olympic rosters were announced, he's been the pits.

This team sucks and it get harder to want to cheer for these guys. But what else can we do?

Paq Twinn - Not a good game, of course you wouldn't get that if you only looked at the stats. The Hawks played with the Oilers in the first 40 mins, like a cat plays with a mouse. It was hard to watch, really hard, the Oilers were lucky to not be down by 6 after 2 periods. One day when this team grows up, I hope they're like the Hawks because they are a treat to watch. Oilers on top of the world...well the Leafs at least

I know I am just a rumor blogger and am not an Oilers fan (Devils fan here) however I do know a lot about them and I want you guys to know that the Oilers are above at least 1 team..... guess who?

The Toronto Maple Leafs.

You guys (Oilers fans) think you are in a rough position (last in the NHL). Well, the Leafs are in a worse position.  Not only are they 3rd last in the NHL, but they don't have a 1st this year (Cam Fowler???), or a 1st next year either... terrible.

They have 3 big assets Tomas Kaberle (NTC), Phil Kessel (they just got him) and Nazem Kadri (gosh forbid they have 1 good prospect), so they are looking at dealing all of their other good players Hagman, Ponikarovsky and such just to get some 2nd round picks where you draft players that may or may not ever play in the NHL.

Oilers nation don't worry you have a bright future with Taylor Hall, Svenson, Eberle, etc.., plus you have Hemsky and Khabibulin injured who are big time players and will be ready and fresh for next season. Also, despite losing all of the time, you get to watch one of the most talented Defenseman in the NHL.  No not Sheldon Souray, I am talking about Lubomir Visnovsky. This guy is just so talented and is really a treat to watch.

That is all for now Oiler nation please comment and let me know how I did.  If it was bad I will just stick to my rumors (and Devils at a different site).

Quick leafs rumor update

Leafs GM Brian Burke has given Garnet Exelby permission to seek a trade.

Preds re-sign Goc

The Nashville Predators have signed forward Marcel Goc to a one-year contract extension worth $775,000.

Wednesday Morning Rumor Update

Leafs shopping Mayers

- According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Toronto Maple Leafs have given Forward Jamal Mayers and his agent permission to seek a trade out of Toronto, Leafs GM Brian Burke has made it clear to every NHL team that Jamal is available.

Trade winds continue to swirl

- Canadiens GM Bob Gainey was scouting last night at the Leafs/Kings game, it is believed that scouts for up to 10 different teams were taking in that game as well.

Ponikarovsky update

- Alexei Ponikarovsky's play as of late has been very solid and that is not going unnoticed, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Atlanta Thrashers have all shown interest.

"The Wizard" drawing interest

- The Boston Bruins and LA Kings have shown serious interest in Hurricanes Forward Ray Whitney don't be suprised if he is dealt before the olympic break.

King Kovy?

- Kovalchuk to the Kings is picking up, if Kovalchuk was to be dealt to the Kings it would take a package like Jack Johnson, Alex Frolov, a top prospect and a 1st round draft pick. Rich Hammond an LA Kings insider has confirmed that the 2 teams have held talks about the Russian superstar.

Hill-en to climb

- New York Islanders Defenseman Jack Hillen took an Ovechkin shot in the face yesterday night. He suffered broken jaw & damaged teeth; he had surgery last night and will be out the next 6-8 weeks.

Time for an Oil change

- The Edmonton Oilers are interested in Predators Goaltender Dan Ellis, I have heard the Predators really like O' Sullivan.

I will highlight sections involving the Oilers in BLUE from now on.

Rumors, call-ups and injury updates

First off I would like to introduce myself, I am Todd, I own my own site NHLTALK202 I am a rumor and Devils blogger there (I am doing rumors here) I have blogged for Hendrickshockey, Hockeyleaks and various other publications. I am thrilled to be here and would like to thank you guys for the opportunity. Now down to business.

Flames call-up F Mikael Backlund

The Calgary Flames have called up Forward Mikael Backlund in hopes to jump start some Offense, He will be on the 1st unit for the Flames.

Islanders prospect Calvin de Haan out 6 months

Islanders prospect Calvin de Haan suffered shoulder injury on Sunday in Oshawa. He will have surgery and will miss the next six months...tough break for the kid.

Quick Souray update

I have heard/read rumors that Souray will end up in Washington. I  doubt that will happen as he wants to stay in the West and location is a big thing for him and his family but it is possible.

Fantasy team of the week

According to Jimmy Murphy of NESN.com the Bruins may be close to a trade, he stated not to expect Kovalchuk or Phaneuf but a trade for a player of less value like Ray Whitney or Matt Cullen.

That is all for now all comments are welcome!

Laying Out The Red Carpet... We Have New People

When I started Oilers Jambalaya in November of 2008, I said I wanted to keep it fresh and current and ever changing. I said I wanted to try and provide somewhat of a different point of view and do my best to entertain people. I hope that I have at least done that so far. But I guess the jury is still out on that.

But today is a new day and it's a great one here at Oilers Jambalaya.  Not only are you going to see the ridiculous banter of Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn continue, we went out and brought two new people in to add to the OJ mix. If this wasn't the best idea ever... I don't know what is.

Now first, guys, we need to clean up a bit. We have a lady in the house now.  Miss Scarlett come to us from the All Oil...all the time! blog.  All Oil is her baby and it's a great blog. She is a fantastic writer who never beats around the bush. She's honest and is very passionate about the Edmonton Oilers (season ticket holder for 5 years) and that's what we like about her. She's perfect for Oilers Jambalaya.

Before moving to Edmonton seven years ago, she hailed from rural Manitoba and started her Oilers passion back then. You see, she would go to the Winnipeg Jets games and instead of cheering for the Jets, she'd cheer for the Oilers and annoy the Jets faithful. How sweet is that? I know!

Now she's an Edmontonian and there's two reasons why. It's part Oilers, part school. But she insists it's more for the Oilers. She loves them that much. Awesome!

The interesting side of her; She has a Masters in Russian History and still loves Igor Ulanov. But who doesn't right?  I think I could talk her into sharing some Russian history with us.

I think you will impressed by Scarlett, I am.

Just when you thought that I would be done and that was enough change. No way Jose! Throw together a hand clap for Nick "Oilers Fan" Walker. He also has his own blog over at NHLTalk202 with his friend Boston. It's a good blog, check it out.

I've liked Nick since the first day I came across him. Most of the time we agree, but I'll find something to pick on him about I'm sure. He's fairly new to the blogging scene (since the Heatleygate scandal) so I think it's fair to give him a chance. He's a good writer and it will be nice to see him grow right here at OJ.  I suppose we can rib him too. He's as close to a rookie as it gets around here. ; )

Nick is originally from Edmonton but is living in Victoria, BC right now.  He can't wait to get back to E-town and attend the U of A after graduating from school.  He's been one of the Oilers biggest supporters since he was five years old and now living in BC, takes a constant verbal beating from Canuck fans because he's a "Coilers" fan. I can feel his pain as I was raised in BC as well and it sucked. Canuck fans have a way of pissing you off. Nick's living the hell right now. Poor guy. Come back soon.

With his love for the game of hockey and the Edmonton Oilers, I think he's going to add a little pizazz to Oilers Jambalaya and our lives. Thanks for coming Nick.

Well this is a great day for us and we want thank Scarlett and Nick for coming here and helping us improve Oilers Jambalaya.

And we thank you the readers, the only reason Oilers Jambalaya exists.

A State of Shock / Edmonton Oilers Version

Life's not all rosy around the Oilers Nation as of late. The Oilers have had a couple of games lately that could have been the Oilers first win of 2010, but they choked instead. Several times over.

The more I talk to people around town, the more depressed these people are getting. "Oilers suck!", I'm told. True. That's a little hard to argue. They do suck.

See, since the team has went on a two month skid, the average fans are not watching the games anymore. They don't care and nor should they. It's hard to get pumped up for a game when you know they are going to get killed. Like the Chicago game coming up this Tuesday. The only question will be not whether the Hawks can beat the Oilers, but rather by what goal margin will be when the Hawks mop the floor with them.  How exciting is that? Unless you are a Hawks fan, not very.

I think that once the Oilers pull together a win, we will see some smiles back on peoples faces. For the most part, I think we all accept the fact that we are going for the Dive For Five. So losing comes with that. But to not have one single win in 2010 is pretty lousy. Just one win every so often would be nice. At least they have been trying hard.

The season started off so great. Remember how great that was? I was such a gloating jack ass, spreading my Oilers glory with everyone I know on Facebook and Twitter. Ahh... those were good times. Now where are we? I'm begging for one stinking win. Sad.

The Edmonton Oilers right now are GP50  W16  L28  OTL6  PTS38

I'm curious what the PPV numbers were like for each game this season. I'm going to guess that there has been a slow decline in viewers. I still watch every game, but I know a lot of people that simply are not paying for anymore games this season. They have had enough.

So what's the point of all this Ray? I don't know. *shrugs shoulders*

I guess I'm just in shock.

Player Grades / Oilers vs Stars / Cult of Hockey - Edmonton Journal (1/22/10)

Thanks again to David Staples for asking me to do the Player Grades for the Cult Of Hockey.

One of the things I have noticed in the last few bad losses is the lack of blocking shots.  If the Oilers want to win games, they need to block shots. Mind you, if I was on a team as bad as these guys have been playing, I may not throw my body in front of no pucks either. But regardless, if this team actually wants to win, block more shots.

The Oilers were good this game. All of them really tried to win a game, and not for us, but for themselves.  They came close but couldn't seal the deal.  With a tie game on the line, I do wonder why Quinn had the players he did out there. Why Strudwick? Why Moreau? At this point however, I don't really want/care about the answer. I just wanted a win.

The Cult of Hockey Grading System: 10-perfect game, 9-extraordinary, 8-great, 7-good, 6-above average, 5-average, 4-below average, 3-poor, 2-terrible, 1-deserves to be in minors.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF (7) - I liked the way he played. He was worse tonight than usual on the faceoffs but his overall game was pretty solid.  He has that natural chemistry with Pisani and Moreau and it really shows.  Now if for a minute you forgot all about how fat his wallet is and really watched him as a 3rd line center, he's damn good.  He's a top notch 3rd line guy. It's where he belongs and it's where he shines.  His -1 came on that last goal of the game.

#12 ROBERT NILSSON (7) - He continues his good play with another good game tonight. He made a nice play on the first Potulny goal and continued that throughout the game.  He makes some crazy plays and after the night was over he had two assists.  Nilsson was even hitting guys.  He's trying hard to be the real deal and you know what? I think he's getting there.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO (7) - Once again his chemistry with Gagner keeps him looking good.  His speed and his ability to get open makes him stand out.   I really liked that he was shooting the puck. He had 5 shots and is seriously due for a goal or two.

#16 RYAN POTULNY (8) - Who is this guy? At the beginning of the year I didn't know or care anything about this guy. I sure do care now. He's a gem in the dirt pile we call the Oilers.  He scored the games opening goal and picked up an assist on the Gagner tie goal.  In between all that he was playing a great game. He finished the night at 50% on faceoffs and took 4 shots. He did end up tied with a team worse -2. But I don't care... I LIKE POTSY! I LIKE POTSY!

#18 ETHAN MOREAU (6) - I'm sure glad they got rid of that strange guy that used to wear that tinted visor.  He was terrible.  The new and improved Moreau was dynamite.  Seriously folks, playing with Horcoff and Pisani is the best thing for him. He has that brotherhood with those two guys and seems cool like a cucumber out there. He had 3 shots and 3 hits and played pretty damn good (for his standards).

#19 PATRICK O'SULLIVAN (5) - I don't know what to say about him. He was OK. Nothing fancy. He tried hard but really didn't do much at all.  He's a shooter who had a total of 2 shots on goal. So if he didn't shoot the puck then what did he do? *shrugs shoulders* One thing I do know, he was the other guy with a -2. But he didn't score like Potulny did.

#22 JEAN-FRANCOIS JACQUES (4) - He had no effect in this game what so ever.  In his 8:30 of ice time, he only mustered up 2 hits and one good shot. Hitting is your thing. No hit? No good.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER (8) - The first period was making me nervous.  It's hard to grade people when it's all PK and no 5 on 5 action.  Penner was one of those guys that I didn't notice much. But once the nonsense was over, Penner and his line mates started to really take it to the Stars.  Penner was a force.  He was stick handling like Gretzky (maybe a stretch) and was rewarded for it by getting 2 assists.  He was one of my favorite players tonight. This was the player I was lobbying for to get picked by Team Canada for the Olympics. Glad he's back, he's been gone for too long.

#34 FERNANDO PISANI (6) - Like I said up above, Pisani fit in with those two guys.  I liked the way he played tonight. He did all the little things right and tossed 3 hits in there as well. The 3rd line is what he's good at. Keep him there Quinn.

#37 DENIS GREBESHKOV (6) - On one hand he looks great. He handles the puck well. On the other hand, he doesn't handle the puck so well. He had a few pucks slip off his stick and I'm not really sure why they didn't count as a giveaway.  He did lay out 4 hits and he had some good PP time.  I just don't know why he was out with Strudwick in the dying seconds of a tie game. Grebeshkov freaks me out and if it came down to it and I'd have to chose, I'd keep Gilbert.

#41 TAYLOR CHORNEY (5) - This was his first NHL game is a while.  He was OK and I thought that he could have played more minutes (he played 11:51). The only official stats he registered was 1 takeaway and 1 blocked shot. That just screams a 5 rating. His low point of the game was his pinch that led to the Stars third goal. To his credit, he almost made it back in time and not one forward beat him back to the zone.

#43 JASON STRUDWICK (6) - Don't get me wrong. I like Jason Strudwick. He's a good guy. But don't put him out with a game like that on the line. It's a 3-3 tie game and there is less than a minute left in the 3rd period.  Renney looks down the bench and picks... Strudwick. The winning goal was a result of a puck ending up on Struds stick just as he's losing his balance. Boom, the puck shoots off his stick and onto Neal's stick. Game over.  But for the rest of the game he was good. I liked him. The quote of the night was from Kevin Quinn. Just as Struds started fighting with those rabbit punches he throws, Quinn says, "Strudwick has the lawnmower going now". And it totally was the lawnmower. Classic!

#44 SHELDON SOURAY (7) - Souray was a great player tonight. During the 5on3's he was hacking and whacking everything in sight. All night he played rough and he really stood out as being good.  He had 5 shots and 3 hits.  Souray was a leader out there. He led by example.

#46 ZACK STORTINI (5) - He was rocked at the half way point of the game and never really amounted to much.  He had a pretty non-existent game. There is a better player than what we seen in that uniform tonight. He did manage 3 hits. So he does get a 5 because of his lousy 5:12 of ice time. But who knows... maybe he's hurt from that hit?

#71 LUBOMIR VISNOVSKY (6) - I liked him tonight. He just needs to find away to hit the net with his shot. He had 5 attempts blocked and one shot on the PP and he missed so bad it wrapped around the boards and out of the zone.  He wasn't great, but he wasn't bad either.  He played 22:50 and had 2 giveaways.

#77 TOM GILBERT (6) - Gilbert was not bad or great. He was very Visnovsky like.  He played 22:57 and only had 1 shot hit the net.  His big moment: his assist on the first Gagner goal.  He has definitely played better games. I do like him with Souray and I don't see a compatible guy for him to play with of Souray does get traded.

#78 MARC POULIOT (5) - He was better than the other two guys he was playing with. He was 50% on faceoffs and had 2 hits in his 9:09 of ice time. It's too bad he didn't get any PP time. He needs some responsible time to gain some confidence.

#89 SAM GAGNER (8) - He played a great game from start to finish. The last few games he's really taken his game to a higher level.  His penalty was even OK in my mind as well. He tossed down a Star player and had a little spaz.  He showed emotion and his line mates feed off of it.  He scored the Oilers second goal of the game and scores the tie goal to bring the game to a crazy climax. Even though his second goal was a lucky bounce of Modano's foot and who cares. That tied the game. That was a huge goal. Ahh.. but not for long. *sigh* He was 50% on faceoffs and had 6 shots on goal.

#38 JEFF DESLAURIERS (N/A) - Did not play.

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK (7) - The Big Easy is what Kevin Quinn was calling him tonight on the Sportsnet broadcast. Let's see if it sticks. I really do like Dubnyk.  In my opinion, he's been better than Deslauriers lately and is making a strong case to be the backup here next year.  The first goal he barley seen and the second goal was tough to stop.  The third was a Strudwick last second deflection and he really had no chance on it. I feel bad for him because I just want to see him get his first NHL win. He was close tonight. But close sucks.

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

*coming soon*

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Andrew Cogliano - He goes for holding at 15:47 of the 3rd period and the Oilers then proceed to get scored on and the game is tied up.  Not a great play by an Oiler young guy. That's usually reserved for the vets on the team. What gives?

------------------

BEERS

Sam Gagner - Gagner was excellent tonight.  He was buzzing and generating good scoring chances.  He had 6 shots and a goal to go with those shots.  He was promoted to the 1st line for this game and really took the opportunity to shine.  He was terrible on faceoffs (22%) and that's about it.  I thought he was good enough for a frosty beer. Cheers!

Ladislav Smid - I liked Smid.  He was in your face and hard to deal with and the Oilers need a pest like him.  He may not have been flashy, but he did his job. He laid out 2 hits and also had a takeaway and a blocked shot.  This was a Budweiser game for Smid. Cheers!

Robert Nilsson - This guy has been freaking amazing since coming back from the concussion. Tonight he blocked 5 shots and was creating lots of chances with his speed and slick moves. He may have been moved down to the 2nd line, but he made that line look good as well.  With 18:00 minutes of great play, he deserves a cold one. Bud Light? Cheers!

Patrick O'Sullivan - He had some glorious chances and played his butt off.  It's been quite refreshing watching play the last few games.  Much like Nilsson, he's been great.  The highlight of his game tonight was his 6 shots.  Now if only he could score. Good game Patty. Have a Kokanee. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Andrew Cogliano (He plays well with Gagner. Keep him there Quinn.), Marc Pouliot (In his second game played, he gets and assist and played good.), Shawn Horcoff (He had a great game at faceoffs. He was 62% and dominated.), Devan Dubnyk (He played well enough to win.  But the refs had a different plan.), Jason Strudwick (4 blocked shots and looked OK.)

------------------

JEERS

The Terrible Call in OT - I can't believe the way the referee's have been calling games lately.  Grebeshkov was penalized in overtime for a non-call.  It was a dive.  A DIVE!!! Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): The Entire Team (A loss is a loss and the ship sinks a little more.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - What a sad way to end a game.  Dubnyk played great, Gagner was flying and Nilsson was still good (go figure).  And... they lose.  Again. *sigh*  Well can it get worse? I guess we will find out.

Paq Twinn - Well that was an awesome game. For the first time in, well I can't remember, the Oilers didn't totally crap the bed. Cogs took a BTP that led to the tying goal and the refs blew the game in OT with a phantom call on Grebs. In the end I believe that we, the fans, got the best of both worlds, one hell of a game and the Oilers lost. Dive for Five baby. Game Grade B-
