Canada Wins Gold!!! Vancouver 2010 Olympics

CANADA WINS THE GOLD MEDAL IN MEN'S ICE HOCKEY!!!

For this moment, the world can suck it!

2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics - Consider The Podium Owned

What a fantastic Olympic games. What started out as what could possibly the worst winter Olympics ever, turned out to be pretty damn good after all.

The Canadians athletes made the country so proud that it sparked a lot of interest into the winter sports. People all over the place are now interested in some crazy sport a lot of us didn't know it even existed. Like Ski-Cross. That event was awesome and even inspired me to say to the wife that I want to try that. I don't care if I am 33 years old, I can do that. Couldn't I?

Probably the best part about watching the 2010 Olympic games was that I was able to introduce them to my two year old daughter. Every day I would come home after work and was greeted with a "GO GO CANADA!!!" from her. Not only did she grasp the concept of cheering for Canada (and not just the Oilers), she embraced it and watched a lot of the events with me. It made me proud as her father that she even gave a crap about the games with little understanding of what she was watching. Watch out 2026 Olympic games, little Miss Ava will be there winning a gold medal with her old man yelling from the stands.

Here are my favorite parts of the Olympics; The Medal winners:

1) The opening ceremonies were awesome yet, embarrassing. I touched on it at the beginning of the Olympics and you can read it here

2) I don't care if Jenn Heil won silver and not gold, she did great. She was so upset by not winning, but she won the first medal for Canada at these games. It was a start of something great for this country.

3) Alex Bilodeau was the first Canadian to (Men's Moguls) win Gold in Canada. He was great and skied really well. His story was fantastic and it was great to see him succeed. A great and touching moment for me.

4) The Speed Skating - Long and Short Track - were very fun to watch. There was some great moment and Canada won a variety of medals in the speed skating events.

In Short Track Speed Skating, (my favorite) Canada won silver in the Ladies 3000m relay, Marianne St Gelais won silver in the Ladies 500m, the Canadian Men won Gold in the 5000m relay and Charles Hamelin won Gold and François-Louis Tremblay won the bronze in the Men's 500m race.

In Long Track Speed Skating the Canadians also did well. Christine Nesbitt won gold in the Ladies 1000m race, Clara Hughes won bronze in Ladies 5000m, Kristina Groves won silver in the Ladies 1500m race and won bronze in the 3000m race and the only medals the Men won were in the Men's Pursuit race. They won gold in that event.

5) The Skeleton is always fun to watch. I paid a little more attention to the sliding sports after the tragic accident at the start of the games. Even after they altered the track, it was still dangerous and scary and I wouldn't be caught going down that track. Bobsledders, Lugers and Skeleton riders crashed hard and often. It made all the races very intense to watch.

I loved watching the Skeleton race. How did Canada do you ask? Jon Montgomery won gold. He seems like a real good guy and I was happy for him to win the gold.

Bobsledding turned out not how I had envisioned it to play out. Canada won bronze in the Men's Four-Man Bobsled. No it wasn't the Lueders sled either. Surprised? I was. The Ladies also did well and I'll tell you that was crazy to witness. Canada finished gold and silver in the Two-(Wo)Man Bobsled. What a night that was. Both teams did well and made Canada proud.

6) The Curling was really exciting for me. For one, I don't watch Curling outside of the Olympics and the finals of the Hearts and Brier tournaments. The Cheryl Bernard rink played a hell of a tournament and made it to the gold medal game. But she blew her last shot in both of the last ends to earn a silver medal. Not bad, but she blew it. Kevin Martin's rink on the other hand, made it count when he needed it to. They played great and won the gold for Canada.

7) What the hell is Ski Cross? That's what I was asking. I know what it is now and I want to try it. Ashleigh McIvor won gold in the Ladies race. Thank you to the IOC for allowing this sport in the games. I LOVE IT!

8) Snowboard Cross is equally cool. Mike Robertson kicked some ass and took a silver home in the Men's Snowboard Cross race. Maëlle Ricker dominated in the Ladies Snowboard Cross and took home the gold medal. I look forward to the next Olympics to watch some more of this.

9) Jasey-Jay Anderson lived a life long dream by winning gold in the Men's Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom. He was very humble about the win and this may have been his last race.

10) Now while I hate to admit it (no homo), I did watch some Figure Skating. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won gold in the Ice Dancing competition. They did well and the crowd there went nuts.

11) The saddest story for Canadians at these games was the story of Canadian Figure Skater Joannie Rochette. Joannie lost her mother to a sudden heart attack just two days before her competition. She could have pulled out but she didn't. She choose to skate. Joannie went out and skated her skate for her mom and she won the bronze medal. I think the whole country cried a little for her that night. She was a brave and courageous woman.

12) Now on to the great game of Hockey. My favorite sports of all sports. Now I won't lie to you and tell you I watched all of the Women's games. I didn't. In fact, I think I watched more than enough of it. It's kind of boring. The gold medal game was great and they beat the USA team 2-0 to win a gold. The girls won gold for Canada and even caused some controversy along the way. First they were criticized for running up scores. Then they were in the eyes again with their post game beer drinking, cigar smoking celebration. I don't care what happened after that game was over, I'm just glad the girls won gold.

13) Now to the Men's tournament. If you asked me who the top 4 teams were going to be, I would have said Canada, Russia, Sweden and the Czech Republic. Boy was I wrong. Finland face the Slovakian team for the bronze medal and the Canadians face the Americans in the gold medal game. I will update this once the games are over. **UPDATE** The Fins had a quick 3 goal outburst and that propelled them past the Slovaks to win 5-3 for the bronze medal. It was a good game to watch. I can't wait for the gold medal game.

14) I was impressed with the CTVOlympics.ca website. Very easy to look around and it was sweet to have all the channels right there on my PC. Thanks for that CTV.

I also was quite impressed with the way that CTV, TSN and Sportsnet all worked together. What a strange but nice surprise.

Things that made me say WHAT?!?:

1) The goalies that were the #1 goalie on their respected team that DIDN'T have a painted mask. Miikka Kiprusoff was one of those people. What, couldn't afford it?

2) Why did the Team Canada games always feature Pierre MacGuire? I hate that guy with a passion and when the team was stinking, listening to him pissed me off even more.

3) I was really disappointed with the handling of Brian McKeever. I don't know all the facts on why he was banned from racing in a Cross Country Skiing event, but if it's only for being legally blind than that's bullshit. No matter the placing out come, Brian McKeever should have been given a chance to compete.

4) It turns out former Canadian and current Australian Dale Begg-Smith is the guy responsible for Malware and spam emails. I'm glad you lot the gold and I'm glad you don't live in Canada anymore. You are a piece of trash Dale Begg-Smith. I hope you choke on the money you have made. *middle finger raised*

News & Rumors

The Nashville Predators have re-signed Goaltender Pekka Rinne to a 2 year deal earning him 3.4 million a year. This means they are shopping Dan Ellis.

The Calgary Flames have re-signed Forward Rene Bourque to a multi year deal.

The Minnesota Wild have re-signed Forward Cal Clutterbuck to a 3 year deal.

Alex Auld of the Dallas Stars has cleared waivers.

The Oilers will be very active at the deadline, I expect both Souray and Visnovsky will be dealt.

Is It Tommorow Yet? (Canada vs Russia Olympic Hockey)

Man o' man am I ever excited for the Canada vs Russia hockey game tomorrow. Both teams can not accept a loss at this point of the tournament. One will cherish, one will perish.

So can Canada do it?

I'm hoping so, but it's going to be tough against a high powered Russian team.

Ovechkin & Co are one hell of a dynamic group.  In just about every category the Russians are better except goals for. The Canadians had them by one goal after the preliminary rounds were done. But the bottom line is the Russians seem more stable than Canada does. They shuffle one or two cards. The Canadians, the shuffle the whole deck, goalies included.

So after tonight's game against Germany, I feel better. Not because for the 8-2 stomping against a team that didn't win a game all tournament, but because we finally seen more than just one line working. Or they appeared to work tonight anyways. It gave me hope.

Is this the game Brendan Morrow finds his mean streak?
Is this the game Luongo truly looks comfortable in net?
Is this the game Rick Nash takes his own penalty shots?
Is this the game Babcock stops riding Crosby like a cheap... well you know?
Is this the game Iginla shows that he should have been on the top line all along?
Is this the game where Drew Doughty rips the A off of Chris Pronger and puts it on his own jersey?
Is this the game where Patrice Bergeron doesn't even bother putting on his gear?
Is this the game the Sharks line looks like the Sharks line of the NHL?
Is the the game someone plasters Ovechkin at center ice?
Is this the game where Jonathan Toews becomes the true future Captain of this team?
Is this the game where we finally see some real emotion from Team Canada?

Let's hope so. I'M FIRED UP! Are you?

GO CANADA!!!

Oilers Jambalaya Apology

I apologize to my faithful readers for the Hockeybuzz post today. I will never advocate or promote that jerk off and I promise it will never happen again. In the future I guess I will have to check what people post on this site before it's posted.

I'm sorry.

-Smokin' Ray-

**edit** To be clear, Andy Strickland is not the jerk off, Eklund is the jerk off fraud. Why he is associated with a crook like him is beyond me. He's way better than that.

Daily News & Rumors

Sorry, I have not been blogging much lately but it is hard to get rumors during the Olympics when the focus is all Olympics and people seem to forget about the NHL. Unfortunately I do not have an Oilers rumors for you.

According to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch, GM Scott Howson said the team is leaning toward selling. Names like Raffi Torres and Freddy Modin have came up, there is believed to be a lot of teams interested in Raffi's services.

There is serious interest in Alexei Ponikarovsky, several teams have contacted the Leafs about Alexei and if he remains a Leaf after the deadline I will be SHOCKED.

Price or Halak? We have been asking this question for a while now and a decision may finally be here, I personally think Price will be dealt, and the team that seems the most interested is the Chicago Blackhawks believe it or not.

Anaheim Ducks (29-25-7) at Edmonton Oilers (19-35-6)

Hello? Is Anybody There?

Where have we been for the last few days?

Well, between the two late games on Wednesday and Thursday - the Oilers did win one of those games in a dramatic shootout victory - and the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Olympics on Friday and watching the TV all day yesterday. It's been a full schedule with nothing written at Oilers Jambalaya. Sorry. It's been crazy.

But I'm/we're back and it's time to get back on track.

The Edmonton Oilers will be playing tonight at 5:00pm MST and it's a PPV game. Ugh! Pay for a game that lacks any relevance AND it's on Valentines day. Good luck convincing the significant other on watching the game tonight. You better have a good explanation on why it's romantic to watch the Oilers get their collective asses handed to them. I know I have no good reasons, but I'm sure we will watch it anyways. She loves me. I think.

The 2010 Olympics have started and it hasn't been without it's problems. First, in the Luge training runs on Friday, Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvil died while on a practice run. This prompted VANOC to make changes for the safety of the luge riders and for the best interest of the Olympic games that another tragedy doesn't occur.

Next during the opening ceremonies, it seemed like one big ball of strange. Read on for highlights.

THE STRANGE/BAD PARTS
- First the brutal lip syncing by the performers (Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado).
- Then the weird stuff that VANOC planned was making all of us laugh on twitter (SEE BELOW). Like the Batman playing the fiddle in the moon. This was the East part of the show.
- Or the Peter Pan kid that flew all over the stage during the Prairies part of the show. He made me laugh pretty darn hard. Poor Saskatchewan people. I know your not like that. lol
- The massive fail of the hydraulics that lift the cauldron up. One beam didn't lift up.
- The hooligans that chased Gretzky down were probably freaking the Great One out. Where was the planning and security?
- Seriously... the protesters need to fu*k off. Leave the games alone. You look like teenage dumb-asses.

THE COOL/GOOD PARTS
- The snowboarder that dropped into the Olympic rings and landed it looked impressive. I would imagine it would be tough to do that considering it was fake snow. It looked like plastic.
- I did like the (east) fiddle part of the show. Ashley MacIsaac was awesome.
- At one point when they were showcasing the West, they had orca whales swim across the floor. It was so realistic and they even had the whales blow out as they swam. Very, very cool.  That was my favorite part of the opening ceremonies. (If I was a Canuck fan, I would be asking for that as my intro for the hockey team. How cool would that be?)
- The fat guy with the funny looking beard made a great I AM CANADIAN type speech.
- I liked the choices for the flag bearers; Betty Fox, Bobby Orr, Anne Murray, Jacques Villeneuve, Barbara Ann Scott, Romeo Dallaire, Julie Payette and Donald Sutherland.
- I really enjoyed how they selected the final torch bearers. Great picks; Rick Hansen, Catrina LeMay Doan, Steve Nash, Nancy Greene and Wayne Gretzky. And to top it off, Mr. 99 took the flame to the main cauldron and lit it, on his own.
- The special effects were truly unbelievable.  I could only imagine what they looked like in person.

Edmonton Oilers (18-35-6) at Los Angeles Kings (36-20-3)

Daily News & Rumors

First off, I would like to wish the Oilers luck tonight against the Kings, it should be a good game.

According to Bob McKenzie of TSN the Dallas Stars have claimed F Brandon Segal off waivers from LA.

According to Bob McKenzie the New York Rangers have put tough guy Donald Brashear on waivers.

According to HockeyLeaks.com, the Vancouver Canucks are shopping Goaltender Cory Schneider. They would try and bring in some depth on the blue line. Schneider a top prospect will never get a shot in Vancouver as he is behind Roberto Luongo who is locked up for a long time.

According to thefourthperiod.com, the Atlanta Thrashers are taking calls for Forward Slava Kozlov. Kozlov has been a dud so far this season however he has a ton of Offensive talent that many teams want.

Montreal sends:

B&J #115 Edmonton Oilers vs Phoenix Coyotes Game Recap (2/8/10)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? OK. It came down to the Oilers skating on the ice for Quinn to decide. Stortini sits out and Gagner has flown home to have his knee checked out. So means that Nilsson and Brule are back in the lineup after sitting for a few games. Staios and Smid are back in and Chorney and Plante have been sent back down to Springfield.

- If I'm not mistaken, the Oilers are going to announce that the Oilers new farm team will be in Oklahoma City next season. Thanks Springfield Falcons, it's been a slice.

FINAL SCORE

Edmonton Oilers - 1

Phoenix Coyotes - 6

------------------

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

*coming soon*

------------------
BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - It was a blowout. A bad penalty wasn't going to change anything.

------------------

BEERS

None - They were that bad.

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Gilbert Brule (I liked his hustle and drive tonight. He tried to prove Quinn wrong.), Dustin Penner (He was the only Oiler at +1. He also scored the only Oiler goal.), Ryan Potulny (He also played with some jam. He had 5 shots and was 58% on faceoffs.), Ladislav Smid (He played a pretty decent game. He had 2 shots and 2 blocked shots.), Robert Nilsson (He was not very flashy, but he had 6 shots on net. He also picked up the assist on the Penner goal.), Tom Gilbert (I have liked Gibby's game for a while now. He's been the most consistent Oiler on the back end lately.)

------------------

JEERS

Shawn Horcoff - Man was he terrible. Error after error. It was just embarrassing to watch these 3rd line guys. When you talk about an epic fail, talk Shawn Horcoff. Booooo!

Ethan Moreau - Tied with Staios for a team worst -4. ~Sweet!~ Boooooo!

Steve Staios - He was cause for a few of the Coyotes goals tonight. He was just plain bad. Not a great first game back. He was tied for a team worst with -4 and he had no hits and only one blocked shot. Boooooo!

Jeff Deslauriers - Wow did he suck. Soft goals looked even softer against him tonight. Games like these don't help the GAA. Jeff looked bad and probably would be the first to admit it. Good try, but Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Fernando Pisani (He was lumped on a bad line with two bad hockey players. It seems to be soaking into Pisani. He wasn't very good tonight either.), Jason Strudwick (While I don't put a lot of blame on him - he has very little skill - he was brutal tonight. He did drop the gloves though, but was beat),

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Wow that was painful to watch. Even more than the other bad losses lately. The Twitterland was full of pissed off people. (check the TweetCast recap box above) It gets harder to be positive for these guys. It gets harder to believe that Pat Quinn is the right guy for this job. It gets harder to just simply turn on the TV. But I do it. I love this team - well, not the current one - and I'm here for everything, good or bad. I'm here for that blue and orange logo. I'm here for the oil drop. But most of all... I'm here for the hardcore and best hockey fans ever. The Edmonton Oiler fans kick ass and we deserve better. You deserve better. Patience I guess.

Edmonton Oilers (18-33-6) at Phoenix Coyotes (35-19-5)

Daily News & Rumors (Gainey/Sutton/Colaiacovo/Whitney)

First off, I would like to wish the Oilers luck tonight in their matchup against the Coyotes.  It should be a low scoring game (every Oilers game is).

According to Chris Botta of Islanderspointblank.com, the New York Islanders are receiving calls on Defenseman Andy Sutton. It is unknown if they are willing to trade him.

Canadiens GM Bob Gainey has stepped down as GM of the Montreal Canadiens, Pierre Gauthier will take over.

According to Andy Strickland the St. Louis Blues have made it known that Defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo is available.

According to Adrian Dater, Defenseman John Michael Liles will be a healthy scratch yet again. It is believed that the Colorado Avalanche are currently shopping him.

It looks like there are several teams still interested in former Oiler Ray Whitney.  It appears the Kings, Bruins, Sabres and Flyers are leading the way.

Dear Mr. Tambellini:

Dear Mr. Tambellini,

This shall be a very short letter, as I have not much to say about this woeful hockey club. But let me say this, do you think being shutout three times by one team in one season is acceptable? I'll let you ponder that one for a minute.

I would think after the second time being shutout would make you think that there needs to be some sort of... I dont know... change? Because this team looks exactly like every single team we've had for the past 4 years. Hmmm. I don't like to bash anyone in the Management Office, but hey, you're the Captain of this ship. And someone needs to take the blame. After all, we Oilers Fans sit at home every night, and the poor souls who sit in those seats at Rexall, have to watch this team TOSS away the season like garbage, and we wonder, WHY THE HELL ISNT ANYTHING BEING DONE!

Moreau could be traded in a second for picks, and why hasn't it happened?

And don't get me started on Patty-Oh-Fall-Again, I would have preferred that over-payed S.O.B. Erik Cole.

So please, Mr. Tambellini, do something! Shake up the team. Look at those Maple-Laughs, theyre BETTER than us now! I would take anything quite frankly at the moment!

Yours Sincerely,

Nick Walker

P.S. Where the HELL is Dustin Penner?!

Player Grades - Cult of Hockey - Oilers vs Avalanche Recap (2/6/10)

Once again, David Staples at the Edmonton Journal has asked me to contribute to the Players Grades for his Cult of Hockey blog. How could I say no? I love the Cult of Hockey. So here they are.

Brule and Nilsson are sitting once again. I really don't understand why Brule is sitting. His chemistry with Penner is uncanny and with both of those guys struggling, you would think Quinn would put them together. When they have been together, they score.

Who knows, maybe Quinn is the actual ship Captain behind the Dive For Five?

The main reason the Oilers lost this game tonight is because the defence had no cohesion with the forwards. They couldn't get out of their own zone even if their lives depended on it. That was probably the most frustrating part of the game for me to watch.

The most shocking stat I found was that the Avs had more giveaways (14-7) than the Oilers did. What you say? How is that possible? I don't know?

With another loss, the "Quest for the Best" continues...

The Cult of Hockey Grading System: 10-perfect game, 9 extraordinary, 8 great, 7 good, 6 above average, 5 average, 4 below average, 3 poor, 2 terrible, 1 deserves to be in minors.

Player Grades

#38 Jeff Deslauriers (8) - He was by far the best Oiler tonight. He made some great saves and had some help from the posts. He did everything he could to keep this team in this game. His only weak spot of the game was the 2nd goal. JDD was weak on that goal. But you can't fault him for the loss. He was great and the Oilers didn't score.

#27 Dustin Penner (3) - He was a non factor for most of the game. His only real visible attribute tonight was his ability to handle the puck along the boards. He did that well. But that's it. He was slow, lazy and ineffective. Even more so when Gagner left the game.

#89 Sam Gagner (4) - He left the game after the 2nd period with soreness on his knee. He did go 3W-0L for faceoffs before leaving after only playing 9:37. In that short time, he had 2 shots and that's about it.

#13 Andrew Cogliano (4) - He was mostly invisible. At times he was doing what he was supposed to do, but mostly he did squat.

#19 Patrick O'Sullivan (3) - While he did take shots (5 shots), none hit the net. What good is a shot if it doesn't reach the net? He did nothing to help his line mates and was ineffective. I'm willing to bet that if he wasn't on the block, he'd be sitting.

#16 Ryan Potulny (5) - While he tried hard, his effort came up short. He had 2 shots and 2 blocked shots. He did have a team best 8W-6L for 57% on faceoffs. He was definitely not the worst Oiler tonight.

#91 Mike Comrie (6) - He wasn't afraid to take the puck to the net. He did that very well. He was the real leader on that 2nd line. He played pretty decent and I would have thought that he would have received more ice time (15:57).

#18 Ethan Moreau (5) - He was pretty decent. I know, strange for me too. I have noticed that since he has taken off the visor and has been lined up with Horcoff and Pisani, he's been good. Who would have thought that? I didn't. Moreau had 5 shots and 2 hits and wasn't a big liability.

#10 Shawn Horcoff (4) - He even had a glorious chance with just over 5 minutes left in the 3rd and he just couldn't do it. *sigh* He really isn't earning his money this year. Not even close. While he is a real good 3rd line center, he's not a $5.5 million cap hit. He was a measly 39% on the faceoff dot and only had one shot. He was out played by Moreau. Now that's sad.

#34 Fernando Pisani (4) - While Pisani wasn't a standout, he wasn't a complete bum either. He played his position well, but never registered a stat other than his one shot and one missed shot.

#22 JF Jacques (3) - I didn't like his game much. He always seems to look good in the 1st period and then disappear for the rest of the game. He did it again tonight. 1 hit and 2 blocked shots. That's it.

#78 Marc Pouliot (3) - He was promoted to the 1st line after Gagner left the game but he didn't do anything to impress.  He had one takeaway and one missed shot. He was also a team worst -2.

#46 Zack Stortini (3) - Zack who? Unless it's a rough game he's useless. He can't contribute if there is no mouthing guys off and getting in scrums. This game didn't have any of that and therefore made Storts insignificant.

#77 Tom Gilbert (7) - He has been, in my opinion, the best guy on defence for the oilers in the past few weeks. He's been playing a quiet and mistake free games. He, for the most part did that tonight. While he did have a giveaway, he had a team high, 8 blocked shots. To top it off, he also had 2 takeaways and 2 hits. I really like the way he plays and I would be disappointed if the Oilers trade him.

#37 Denis Grebeshkov (6) - He also played pretty well. He played a ton of minutes and held his own against the speedy Avalanche. He didn't register a shot on net and that is something he needs to work on. Not much point having a guy that doesn't shoot on a PP. He was also a little responsible for the 2nd Avalanche goal. He defensive coverage was not working at that moment.

#71 Lubomir Visnovsky (5) - He was a 50/50 guy tonight. No, not selling the tickets in the stands. It was more of a go to one end of the ice and look good, then skate back to the other end and look like a Bantam player. He was frustrating to watch. He somehow managed to escape a giveaway stat.

#41 Taylor Chorney (5) - Chorney was OK. Nothing to write home about. He would be better if he hit more. He did have 3 blocked shots.

#43 Jason Strudwick (4) - Slow, clumsy, awkward. That's Strudwick for you.

#48 Alex Plante (4) - He's a rookie who makes the simple rookie mistakes. He was fumbling the puck and seemed like he was panicking out there. He did have 4 hits and that's great to see. Hitting is going to be his attribute in this game.

Hockey Night In Canada LIVE TweetCast - Oilers vs Avalanche (2/6/10)

Welcome folks. I figured before this game gets rolling, I would share some of the things I see in the cyber world. Some are intriguing and some are so far off it's laughable.

From @nhlrumor on Twitter:
1) Two trades that Oilers are talking to teams about: Note: THESE ARE NOT CONFIRMED DEALS.
2) Visnovsky to Boston for Ryder, Colbourne, 4th round pick.
3) Horcoff, 4th round pick to Florida for Olesz, Shore. Something along the lines of those two.

Smokin' Ray says: OK. First, that is not enough value for Visnovsky. He's worth more than an average player like Ryder and he is definitely worth more than a 4th round pick. Make that a 2nd round and the deal is done in my opinion. Second, NO ONE IS GOING TO TAKE HORCOFF!!! Quit dreaming.

From @EklundsSource on Twitter:
1) Also hearing Ethan Moreau and Fernando Pisani to the #Caps David Steckel may be involved. (es3)
2)Gretzky gets interviewed by the #BlueJackets for the coaching position? 4 people on the short list including Wayne. (es2)

Smokin' Ray says: None of it can be true. Can it?

GAME ON!!!

ROAD TRIP!!! Oilers in Denver to take on the Avs

The Oilers practiced today in Denver and the lines stayed the same as the last game against the Wild. Brule and Nilsson skated with Bucky today so it looks like they won't be in the game tomorrow night against the Avalanche. Expect Jeff Deslauriers to start in goal.

Word has it that Ladislav Smid and Steve Staios may be coming back soon. But don't expect them back too soon as Quinn seemed less than impressed with their conditioning. Mind you, they are in the Mile High city and from what I have heard, it's hard on the system being that high.

With those two close to returning, I would suspect that the Oilers won't try and claim Nick Boynton who is on re-entry waivers. I think he would be a good pickup, but the Tambo wants to subtract, not add at this point.

Don't forget that with the 2010 Olympics coming up soon, we will need to forget about the Oilers and start booing some of our beloved players. Visnovsky? BOOOOO! Grebeshkov? BOOOOO! Pronger? Boo... damn it. Yay!

I can't wait for the Olympic games to start and I fully expect Canada to win gold in both the Men's and the Ladies Ice Hockey events. GOCANADAGO!

Don't forget that the Oilers play the Avs on CBC's Hockey Night In Canada this Saturday night.

Staios and Smid Update

Our Condolences To The Burke and Reedy Families

We have received some very sad news in the hockey world today. 21 year old Brendan Burke and fellow vehicle occupant, 18 year old Mark Reedy, were tragically killed in a car accident earlier today.

The vehicle that they were driving had slid sideways and struck an oncoming truck. The driver of the truck was not hurt in the accident. They did manage to get Mr. Burke to the hospital, but he later died of his injuries.

Snow and bad roads were the root cause of the accident and as far as we know, drugs and alcohol were not a factor. For more on this story and complete updates, CLICK HERE

On behalf of everyone in the Jambalaya family, we want to send our thoughts and prayers out to the Burke and Reedy families in this troubling time. God bless you folks.

Daily News & Rumors

The Oilers are no longer undefeated in February, maybe they will be in March?

I was attending an OHL game last night and had no connection to the internet so I could not post the trade.

Devils send:

F Patrice Cormier
F Niclas Bergfors
D Johnny Oduya
1st round pick (this year)
2nd round pick (this year)

Thrashers send:

F Ilya Kovalchuk
D Anssi Salmela
2nd round pick (this year)

According to Darren Dreger of TSN, Sheldon Souray has submitted list of teams he would waive his NTC to go to. The teams on the list are the Ducks, Kings, Stars, Rangers, Capitals, and Flyers.

The Nashville Predators have re-signed Forward Jordan Tootoo to a 2 year deal worth $1.25 million per year.

According to John Kincade of The Fan 680, Kari Lehtonen will most likely be traded. He said the Stars and Blues seem to be leading the way.

#114 B&J Oilers Full Game Recap vs Wild (2/4/10)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? Brule and Nilsson sat out this game. Brule was a late scratch and Pisani drew in for him. The same defenseman played tonight as well. Dubnyk was sent down to play some games and Bryan Pitton was recalled to take his place. Did you know he makes more in this one game then he does in a month of AHL pay.

- So tonight I got a little confused and mixed up with The Oilers and a Oilers News poster on Twitter. Another story was posted tonight about the "Souray list of teams" thing that's been going around. I asked the Oilers and meant to ask the Oilers News if it was legit thinking that the news guy was legit (he's not). If it was legit then, the story writer should not use the word "reportedly". You see what I was getting at? Of course the Oilers News guys didn't respond, but within seconds the Oilers.com did respond. This is what they said. "Tambellini said today the information out there is not correct." Oh, I see.

So did he give a list with those names on it or not? Is it true?

BEERS

Sam Gagner - Gagner was once again on top of his game. He made some really nice plays and assisted on the Oilers first goal of the game. His pass to Comrie was unbelievable. He did lack in the stat area tonight, but to watch him is always a thrill. Good game Gags. Want a cold Budweiser? Cheers!

Mike Comrie - Comrie was also pretty darn good. He had 4 shots and scored the Oilers first goal. He may not be the flashy Mike Comrie anymore, but he's smarter. It' too bad we didn't get to see him all year. If I'm the Oilers, I think I'd take another look next season. Good game MC. Feel like a Heineken? Cheers!

The 4th Line - This 4th line was rock solid tonight. Pouliot took 6 shots, Jacques scores a goal and has 3 shots, and Stortini assists on the JFJ goal. What wasn't to like about these guys? They kicked ass and took names. Jacques had 4 hits and they played like a bunch of mean high school bullies. You guys can share a 6 pack. I just don't want to get punched in the face. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Jeff Deslauriers (He was stellar before the 3rd period. After that he was not so stellar.), Tom Gilbert (He really has emerged into this quiet but well played defenseman. His game was good again tonight. Very solid.), Denis Grebeshkov (While he did make some small errors, he was pretty good. He did manage 2 hits.), Ryan Potulny (He was slightly better than average. Nothing that stood out.)

------------------

JEERS

Lubomir Visnovsky - He may have looked OK, but he really wasn't. Sure he makes great plays, but a few times I seen him pass it right to a Wild player. No Oiler around. I'm sure that was one of the reasons why Quinn played him less. At the end of the night he played 18:27 and was a team worst -3. Not good Lubo. Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): None

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Not a bad game for the first 40 minutes. Then the wheels started to fall off a bit. Deslauriers still played decent despite getting burned. I figured a 3 game streak would a have been to good to be true. Streak over.

OILERS (18-31-6) vs WILD (27-25-4)

Last 10: Edmonton 2-7-1; Minnesota 4-5-1

Winless in January & Undefeated in February

Your Edmonton Oilers are on a winning streak and their first since the beginning of December. I was at the game last night and I thought if they lose I'd be okay with that. The win on Monday against Carolina was nice to see and was very satisfying. One win was enough. However, as the game against Philadelphia dragged on last night and continued to be scoreless, any thoughts of the future or draft went out my head and all I wanted was a win. It felt really good to be at Rexall and just enjoy a well played game. Nicely done boys!

However, is anyone else worried that this team will go on a 7 game winning streak, taking themselves out of the preferred position of last place which gives them the best chance at the overall pick? Edmonton is now only 3 points behind Carolina and 5 behind Toronto. There is a lot of hockey to be played this year so it's not the time to panic. I'm sure the Oilers will lose enough games to be in the bottom 5, but I want last overall. It gives them at least the 1st or 2nd overall pick. This team needs it.

Okay, after a quick turnaround, the Oilers left for Minnesota last night and will play tonight. Harding probably starts after Backstrom, the Oiler killer, tweaked his back. So can the Oilers win three in a row less than 24 hours after getting their second ? Do we really want them to win? I'm torn on this because it was so enjoyable to watch the Oilers win. I'd like to see a well played game and if they lose, not a problem. Head vs heart people.

One side note: obviously the devil played last night (Pronger) and received a good smattering of boos. Anyone else notice that Pronger is sure not the player he used to be? I don't follow any other team so I cannot really comment on his play the rest of this year but using last night's game, I am not impressed. Normally I couldn't care less but he'll be playing on Canada's blueline in two weeks and that makes me nervous. Maybe it was just an off game but he certainly wasn't the nasty SOB he was during his Edm or Anaheim days. Right? He was hesitant, jumpy and not confident in his passes at all. Buck up Pronger, Canada needs you to be a nasty ass (not a stretch, this is who you are) so bring it. Ugh I feel sick now.

Okay, bring on the Wild.

Daily News & Rumors

Congratulations to the Oilers for winning 2 in a row, hopefully you can make it 3 tonight.

Kovalchuk is officially on the trading block as Thrashers GM Don Waddell offered 101 million dollars for 12 years and Ilya declinded.

It looks like the 3 remaining teams in on Kovalchuk are the Kings, Rangers and the Devils.

This from Larry Brooks of the NY Post "Source: price of NYR rental of Ilya is Staal or Del Zotto + Callahan or Dubinsky + Kreider or Stepan or Grachev + first rounder = No deal."

Ryan Whitney and Tim Gleason will fill in for Mike Komisarek and Paul Martin on the USA Olympic team.

This from Chip Alexander "Jim Rutherford said a deal is pending that will send Nic Wallin to another team. Rutherford not saying which team."

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Alex Plante - It wasn't so much a bad timing penalty as it was more of a bad luck penalty. He went to clear it in the Oilers zone. Just as he was releasing, the puck rolled and went off his stick a little high and it went over the glass. Thankfully the Oilers killed it off. It's hard to blame the kid for that penalty. Complete accident.

------------------

BEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - The man posted a shutout. WoOoOoOoO! Good for him. Some where Robin Brownlee is yelling, "I told you so!" at all the naysayers. Myself included. JDD was rock solid all night. Lucky a few times but overall, the best player on the ice. Great job Jeff. It's Miller Time. Cheers!

Sam Gagner - Is there anything he can't so? *swoon* Gagner continues he late season point streak. Let's be honest. Do you want 1st half Penner or 2nd half Gagner leading your team into the playoffs? You chose Gagner too? He had 3 shots, 2 hits and an assist on the winning goal. Good game little guy. Here's a frosty mug of Bud. Mmmm. Cheers!

Ryan Potulny - He scores the winning goal with 16.1 seconds left. Who the hell discarded him from their roster like he was a spare part? Oh right, the Flyers did. I bet that felt good for him? He had 3 shots, 2 hits, 2 blocked shots, 2 takeaways and was 5W-3L for 63% on faceoffs and a partridge in a pear tree. What? Too late for Christmas jokes? Great game Ryan. You impress me every game you play. How about a Kokanee? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Alex Plante (I like this kid. He plays tough and takes no guff. He even wanted a piece of Carcillo and he declined. I'm glad we are getting a look at him. Can we stop asking for Peckham all the time?), Tom Gilbert (I really liked him tonight. This may have been the toughest that I have ever seen him play. Serious.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He had a team high 3 takeaways. How does he do it? He was creamed and looked hurt. He came back and played but we will cross the fingers it's nothing like a long term nagging type of injury.), Everyone else was pretty good as well. No one sucked. O'Sullivan and Cogliano each had 4 shots for a team lead.

------------------

JEERS

None - I know... it's strange for me too.

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - 2 wins in a row. Cool. But don't forget to keep your eyes on the prize. But seriously. The Oilers were good tonight. At times the Flyers killed them, yet they didn't get scored on. It was nice to see the team play as a team.
