Greg Chase transferred to 'OKC Barons'

Preparing for my first blog in almost a month, I ran into some interesting news that I didn't notice on the main blogger sites. If late news then I am just late to the party…lol

Greg Chase according to www.eliteprospects.com has been signed to Oklahoma City on a ATO (I am assuming). They call it a transfer but as mentioned by other bloggers around the Oilers he is in the same shoes as Eberle in the past. He is eligible right now to play but not next year in the AHL. Likely he plays out this season and next year is with the Hitman again for one last year as a over ager in the WHL.

Craig MacTavish Joins The Canucks Organization

Since parting ways with the Edmonton Oilers around 2 years ago, Craig MacTavish has been doing television work for TSN and that's about it. Well that's about to change...

Officially today, MacT was hired to coach the Vancouver Canucks AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves. This isn't new news, because if you have been following the tweets on my twitter page, it was retweeted when Nick Kypreos announced it -- unofficially -- on July 16th.

I have mixed feeling about this. I liked MacT and still do. I have great respect for him and I'll always consider him an Oiler. But now, he's a Canuck? That's hard to swallow.

My feelings aside, I'm happy to see him back behind the bench where he belongs. I thought for sure he was going to be the coach of the Jets or different NHL team. Never figured he'd end up in the American Hockey League. I would assume he will have the best shot to replace Alain Vigneault if he's ever fired from the Canucks.

Good luck MacT!

Oklahoma City Barons vs. Houston Aeros Preview

Away: Houston Aeros (0-0-0)
Home: Oklahoma City Barons (0-0-0)

Quick news and notes

-This will be the inaugural game for the Barons.
-The last AAA level game played in OKC was in 1982, when the Oklahoma City Stars were an affiliate of the Calgary Flames.

-Projected lines:
Giroux-Moran-Omark
Hartikainen-Vande Velde-McDonald
O’Marra-Reddox-Ondrus
Stewart-Cornet-Kytnar

-Martin Gerber will be starting in goal.
-The majority of the Barons D-Corps played for the Springfield Falcons last season when they were the Oilers AHL affiliate.
-Barons players to watch:
The first line of Giroux, Moran, and Omark. Expect this to be a huge scoring line with Omark’s playmaking abilities and Giroux’s crashing the net.
Martin Gerber – Was a part of the Carolina Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup winning team. May well be the best goaltender in the AHL.
-The Aeros are the affiliate to the Minnesota Wild.
-The majority of the Aeros forwards played for the Aeros last season.
-The Aeros were 12th in the Western Conference in scoring last season.
-Last season, the Aeros finished the season in last place in the Western Division with a 34-34-7 record.
-This is the first of 10 meetings between the teams for the 2010-11 season.
-Aeros players to watch:
Jean-Michel Daoust – scored 55(21+34) points for the Aeros last season.
Jon DiSalvatore – scored 52(21+31) points for the Aeros last season.

Puck drops at 7:05. You can listen to the game on 96.1 KXY or watch the game on AHL Live. The Barons said that the issue of not being able to listen to the KXY stream in Canada should hopefully be resolved by the beginning of the game tomorrow. Be sure to follow myself (@AHLBarons) and Scott (@OilFieldHockey) as we tweet from the game.

Who The Heck Is Tyler Fleck?

And why do we keep hearing his name?

Isn't that a good question? Who is Tyler Fleck and why all the buzz at the OKC Barons training camp?

With one flick (or Fleck) of the keyboard, the first page I came across was his Hockey DB Stats page. Ahhh... He was apart of the Oklahoma City Blazers, the old "main" hockey team in OKC. Well that didn't take long to figure out why the OKC fans are asking about him. Makes sense.

Fleck and a Fan
But what makes him special and still sought after? Is it just nostalgia or is there more?

From the reports that I read and been told, Tyler Fleck was/is your typical hard nosed defencemen. A real team player. He's one of those Jason Smith/Steve Staios type of guys. You know, the "I'll take a puck to the balls or the face if that means that your not scoring" type of guy.

He was the captain of the OKC Blazers and did a great deal of service and support for OKC.

"Tyler Fleck is a tough defenseman who has been a standout player for a number of years in this league (CHL)," Tulsa Oilers coach Bruce Ramsay said. "He's the kind of player that will sacrifice every part of his body to make a great play."

In 2002/03, he had a personal CHL high, 223 penalty minutes. He wasn't a soft guy to play against by any means. It's almost like he's a Canadian.

Oh....

He is Canadian. Tyler was born on January 20, 1979 in Carlyle, Saskatchewan, which would make him 31 years old right now. Like Don Cherry would say, "He's a good Canadian Kid!". *thumbs up*

After having some decent seasons over his 10 plus years in the CHL, he had an injury plagued year last season and it cost him. After the Blazers folded, Tyler went to Missouri and was traded a little later on to the Tulsa Oilers to finish out the year. During that year he only played in only 37 games.

OKC Blazers Logo
He's since recovered from the injuries and he feels like he's ready to go. So when the Barons came to town, Fleck wanted a chance. He's living that chance right now as he works his ass off to make the team.

As fun and exciting as it has been for the former OKC Blazers fans to get one more glimpse at the man they loved for so long, he may fall short of making this team this time around. The Barons are looking to be quite a young team and Fleck may not fit into their plans. The man whose hits were called "Fleck Checks", is OK with that. He's fully prepared to go to accept his fate and he will go to Tulsa and play with the Oilers this season.

He's ready to play and play he will... he just would have liked it to be in OKC one more time.

Oilers Deal With 6 Players Today And My Thoughts On Releasing Players

The Edmonton Oilers trimmed down the roster today by 6 six players. These three -- Teemu Hartikainen (LW), Johan Motin (D) and Jake Taylor (D) -- have been assigned to the OKC Barons. They will report ASAP.

The Oilers also placed Brad Moran (C) and Greg Stewart (LW) on waivers for purpose of assignment to Oklahoma City. I doubt anyone takes them so there is another 2 guys for the Barons.

The Oilers also released Jared Aulin (C) completely.

Our good friend Russ Jericho did some digging and the OKC Barons website made a whole bunch of pages in preparation of these guys coming to OKC. Aulin was found to have a page.

Edmonton Oilers
Later on today after all this happened, Ryan Rishaug said that Aulin was indeed invited to try out at the OKC Barons training camp, but no contract was offered. Rishaug went on to say he's considering his options.

There are now 37 players left at the Oilers main camp.

That's it for the news. Now it's time for my opinion.

Why the Oilers only cut 6 players today is crazy. The OKC Barons have started their training camp and with the bulk of their opening day roster still in Edmonton, this makes no sense to me.

I can say with confidence that Colin McDonald won't make the Oilers this year. The same can be said for Ben Ondrus or Chris Vande Velde. Are they really that close to making the team? I wouldn't think so. So why are they still there?

Maybe the Oilers want to ensure that the more "quality" guys get a real Oilers experience? Maybe the Oilers just want to push these guys to the limit? See where they stand?

Or maybe they are that close to a roster spot and I'm just to stupid to see it?

Oklahoma City Barons
Whatever the reason is, I don't like it.

Why not let the guys/kids go to OKC as soon as possible so that they can adjust and find a place to live before the long and tiring season begins? Why not let them go and get used to a new city? Why not let them get familiar with the coaching and management staff before it gets hectic?

Why not?

I can tell you this, this will all make less sense if they release more guys tomorrow. There is no game tonight, so why wait till tomorrow?

I guess we will see what happens in the morning.

ON A SIDE NOTE: If I was GM for a day, I probably would have put Deslauriers (my pick) or Dubnyk on waivers today for the purpose of assignment to OKC. Right now, not many teams are needing/wanting a goalie and if the Oilers do need a goalie to replace Khabibulin, Martin Gerber can come back up. This would have been a good chance to sneak one of them (JDD or DD) through waivers. Like Bob McKenzie said, there was a million guys on waivers today. Why not send a goalie?
