Full Recap Oilers Rookie Development Camp Day 3

You know me (Smokin' Ray) and trying new things. Today we have a special guest article by Steve Schulte. Enjoy...

Rookie Camp Day 3:

Started the day a little later than I had planned but still with plenty of time to get to the rink. En route I ended up following a van covered with Oilers stickers and flags all the way from millwoods till I needed to get gas at a Shell Station. My gameplan was to try to watch all the second rounders from this year in detail as well as Petry and Bunz, this proved difficult so I’m just going to write all my observations.

The session started out similar to the Monday session, skating coach Steve Serdachny started the boys off with a few laps to warm up. During this time I had to take notice of the fact that Marincin had incredibly skinny legs and would need to bulk them up if he wants to skate at an NHL level. What I also noticed was how ahead of the pack Petry was when it came to skating, smooth stride and he looked generally comfortable.

Serdachny had them do a drill where they would cross each line on one leg and then switch to backwards and forwards respectively. Pretty much the whole team with the exception of MPS had trouble with this exercise to the point where I believe it was Lander really struggled.

Continuing with goofy drills Steve now had the players doing one leg, with the other one on top of a puck. Here was the first wipeout of the day which came ironically from one of their best skaters, Taylor Hall had a fall, which is ok because I happen to fall for Hall, Yeah I did.

The next drill was hard to watch for some players but a pleasure for others, the object was to skate from one end of the ice to the other while stickhandling two pucks, Eberle, Pitlick, MPS, and Hall did this with ease, except the first run MPS lost a puck into the corner, they followed this up by doing it backwards.

Last drill without being able to shoot a puck, all players were spaced out around the whole rink, and had to skate around and jump over their sticks, my observation here was Petry in front of me looking sexy again, and Brandon Davidson (6th round pick) struggling mightily, also M&M (Martin Marincin) tripped over his stick once, hilarity ensued.

The next thing was Sillinger explaining the plan for the next drill, there were 28 players on the ice and 27 of them were taking a knee, the one not taking a knee was good old Steve’s favorite prospect Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, nothing interesting but I found it weird, picture is on my twitter account.

We now enter my favorite drill of the day, players were paired off about 4 meters from a goalie, had to do a little lap mixed of forward and backward skating and then fight to take the shot on net, I didn’t see the person that MPS knocked off the puck to score but it was a thing of beauty, I think he can keep up with the physical game if we see things like that occur.

Players left to flood the ice after about a half hour, I heard Sillinger tell a cameraman that tomorrow we would be in rink A for the 3 on 3 tournament, which is good because it has more seats.

Buchberger takes over running the session, lots of shooting and puck work, at this point I turned my attention to T. Bunz, love his Tigers pads. Practicing two on one drills Bunz shows incredible lateral movement and sound positioning, and in two series Pitlick hit the post and was just caught on a glove save, he has a sweet shot.

A couple three on two drills but nothing very interesting, weird thing I noticed, Cornet looks a lot like MPS, however skill wise they are on different plateau’s as Cornet doesn’t really impress me.

Coaching staff treat the fans to a 4 on 4 session, was not expecting this. Notable players on each team, Grey: Hall, MPS, Lander, Marincin, Petry. Blue: Eberle, Pitlick that midget walk-on, Jones’s. Guys next to me bet on each team with eachother, I assumed the one to pick Grey had easy money but he ended up losing. At this point I was pissed I didn’t bring a notepad to record who scores because I have a terrible memory, but the midget walk-on of who’s name escapes me cherry picked hard and blew one past Pitton.

Final thing they did, also to the delight of the fans was a quick shootout, notably MPS, Eberle both missed, Petry sniped one home and when Mr. Taylor Hall put it in the net the place went a little crazy.

Not the best write-up but what can you do I’m not a blogger, I’d like to thank the guys at Oilers Jambalaya and Oilfield Hockey for letting me do a short piece.

Also as some of you know I am a comedian and am performing in a show Monday July 19th at The Comic Strip in West Ed, Tickets are 7.50 a piece however I have lots of giveaways, if you would like to attend message me on on the twitter account provided below. Final note, if you are going to the Baseball game tonight and sitting in the prospects section come say hi, I will be wearing a shirt with abs on it as I am still trying to get my Hartikainen picture.

Edmonton Oilers A Game Recap / First 1/2 Sucked, Second 1/2 Decent

This is brief game recap of the Edmonton Oilers vs the Detroit Red Wings game on Sportsnet West.

--------------------

I just want to thank everybody for the kind words and warm wishes yesterday for the birth of my second daughter. My family and I really appreciate it and all four of us are home now.

I would also like to thank my wife for being cool about watching the Oilers game after such a long couple of days. She's tired of watching this crap Oilers team and I don't blame her. I am too. But... I'm hardcore and I don't miss many games.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- With the Wings up 4-0, it was nice to see the Oilers once again make a last half of the game charge. While the Wings manged to win this game, the Oilers at least tried for a little bit.

- With the loss, the Edmonton Oilers have clinched 30th place in the NHL standings. At worst, the Oilers will get the #2 overall pick at the upcoming 2010 rookie draft.

- Jeff Deslauriers played a pretty decent game. Make sure you watch the highlights, he makes some HUGE saves.

- Mike Comrie was moved to the first line and really had himself a good game. Even after Penner was hurt, Comrie kept up the good playing. He had a goal and an assist.

- Andrew Cogliano is not only getting more ice time, he's making the most of it. He had 2 assists and was a +1. He also led the Oilers with 4 hits. I'm guessing the Oilers are really trying to make him look good to other teams so we can trade him in the summer.

- I really liked how Tom Gilbert played as well. He picks up his first ever NHL multi goal game and lead this team in the 3rd period.  It's just too bad the Oilers didn't win because Gilbert did his part.

- Gilbert Brule did better than his stats suggest. He plays an effective game, but if he's paired with people that make errors, it reflects on Brule.

- Aaron Johnson picks up another point by notching an assist on the Mike Comrie goal. If the Oilers don't re-sign Johnson, I'd be shocked.

- Strudwick and Chorney had some great chances for the Oilers when they were on the ice. WTF?!? They both finished the game +1 and +2 respectively.

The Not So Good:

- Losing a game to a high stick goal is horse crap. Whoever made that call was wrong. Very wrong.

- Getting out shot  44-26 is not very good. Not good at all.

- Not showing up till the half way point sucks even more. Judging by the way the Oilers made plays and scored, this could have been another win for the Oilers over the Wings if they would just play a 60 minute game.

- Johnson, Brule, O'Sullivan and Potulny were each -3. Ouch!

- Dustin Penner took a puck to the eye (he left the game) early in the game but he should be OK to play the next game on Friday.

The Side Dish:

- Only the Stockton Thunder played last night. They won their game and clinched a playoff spot. Good for those guys. Read the Game Recap here.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- JDD was fan-freaking-tastic! He made some huge saves and really made sure the Canucks weren't going to tie the game. Wow! He faced 33 shots and looked like a for real #1 guy. Can this guy stay around for a while or does he disappear the next game?

- Tom Gilbert scores a goal and notches an assist to lead the offence for the Oilers. His goal came on his only shot of the game and it was his first goal in 42 games. Ouch! He also had 3 takeaways and 2 blocked shots. Great game for Gilbert. All this in 22:23 of ice time.

- Ryan Whitney has been very, very good since acquiring him for Visnovsky. Tonight he had 3 hits and played a team high 24:46. He's going to be fun to watch next year.

- Stortini was challenged a lot and never dropped the gloves. What for? The Oilers were leading all game. I was surprised that he didn't to be honest. With 11:01 of ice time, he was pretty good. He had 5 hits.

- Andrew Cogliano is a new player. He's still rockin' it up with Brule and Penner and it showed by him scoring tonight. Maybe he found a home with those two guys for next season?

The Not So Good:

- Taylor Chorney needs to not be in the NHL at this point. We have all seen the good Chorney. Tonight wasn't that guy. But when you don't have much other options, he'll do.

- Ethan Moreau should NOT get 16:58 in ice time. That's just plain nuts.

- Sam Gagner on the 4th line is stupid. STUPID!

- Being 40% on faceoffs isn't good enough to be a winner. I really hope the Oilers address this because this happens more games than it should. And it's not just one player, it's all the centers.

The Side Dish:

- No Jordan Eberle until Friday. I know... it sucks.

- The Stockton Thunder have added Bryan Young and Matt Marquardt as they were assigned to Stockton.

--------------------

DID YOU KNOW? (Facts About The Edmonton Oilers)

Did you know... that the Oilers are so bad that when a sports program shows the standings, the Oilers are all but blacked out?

Did you know... the new Oklahoma City AHL team will be named soon? It's be rumored that they will announce it on the 29th.

Did you know... in light of Devan Dubnyk getting sick, the Oilers signed Nathan Deobald to a one game contract. He will be their backup in tonight's game. Lucky bastard. He wore #1 and had a great seat on the bench. He plays for the University of Calgary.
