BEERS & JEERS PLAYER GRADES

The Cult of Hockey Grading System:
10 perfect game,  9 extraordinary,  8 great,  7 good,  6 above average,
5 average,  4 below average,  3 poor,  2 terrible,  1 deserves to be in minors.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (7) BEERS He was pretty good tonight (5 hits and 3 blocked shots). Best I have ever seen him. He out chanced the opposition and really played a smart game. No stupid chances taken. I liked what I saw from him for the whole 60 minutes. He played 18:55 and was +1 at games end.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (6) He skates fast and stick handles well. But he needs to learn that he won't beat the whole team with his skill. He needs to find more ways to be successful. He did take a team high, 4 shots and scored the empty net goal..

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (5) He was average. Nothing special. He wasn't on for a single scoring chance for, but he did face some good lines against. He also finished -1. Considering the Sens only scored once, that sucks.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (6) I thought he played well but with all his ice time, he made some mistakes. The only notable one was the Alfredsson giveaway. But other than that he did well. He out chanced the opposition 8/3 and he played 26:21.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (6) His line played against the Spezza line and that made their nights harder. Horcoff assisted on Hall's empty net goal and finished the night 7/10 for 41% on faceoffs.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (8) BEERS Wow! He had himself another great game. Look at Mr. Fat Lip go. He was flying all game long. In 17:38 of ice time, he had a goal and an assist. This kid grew some heart in the last few games.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (6) Average. He still plays a solid game, but when you face a top line, it makes your job hard. He helped make the Hall goal happen and picked up an assist.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (5) Better game for Fraser. He did OK with 50% on faceoffs, a team best. His line started well with a great 1st shift. Would like to see him be more consistent.

#22 JF JACQUES - (5) He had a couple of big hits and that's about it. Not very effective when he's one of the hired muscle guys.

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (5) He blocked 3 shots and took 3 shots. It's too bad he was out chanced, but I suppose that comes with the job when you are the 3rd pairing.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (7) BEERS He played a heck of a game with Cogs and Brule. He used his power wisely tonight and made things happen. He had 2 assists and out chanced the Sens 4/1. He blocked 2 shots and took 3 shots on goal. Penner plays well with Brule so I can't see why Renney would split them up. This line should stay out.

#28 RYAN JONES - (4) JEERS He was pretty bad. I have no idea why he's still with the team while Liam Reddox is busting his ass in OKC.

#29 MARTIN GERBER - (8) BEERS He played well. He controlled his rebounds well and really played a solid game. I was critical about him starting before the game started (I don't like starting a goalie against a former team). He proved me wrong. Atta boy Gerber!

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (0) DNP (Injured)

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (0) DNP (scratch)

#45 SHAWN BELLE - (0) DNP (Minors)

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (7) BEERS He played good. He could have been played more. He only played 4:53, but took 3 shots on net. What!?! Who else can play as little and still create as much? Not many on this squad. Play him more Renney. Switch Stortini and Jones.

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (7) BEERS I should write a book. How to love Peckham in 30 days or less. The man was a machine again tonight. He was a team best +2 and had 2 hits and 3 blocked shots. I liked him a lot. My favorite guy on defence now. Maybe we should start a Peckham to the all star game campaign?

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (7) BEERS Brule is usually all over the ice (not always a good thing with him). He  had a goal and an asissit and played 15:45.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (7) He was pretty decent. Hard to believe. He scored a goal, 4 blocked shots and 2 shots on goal.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (0) DNP (Injured)

#89 SAM GAGNER - (6) He was OK. He had an assist and was the best on his line. Too bad Jones is hampering his play.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (6) He was better than the stats suggest. He crashed the net and played hard. Would like to see him with more chances on the PK. He had a hit and a shot.

Andrew Cogliano, Almost A Jib Cutter?

After another solid game last night from Andrew Cogliano, I'm starting to regret all the smack that I have been sending his way as of late. He's proving me wrong, and that to me, is impressive. I like that.

It seems as the tougher it (the game) gets for Cogliano, the more he steps up and responds. He had struggled plenty early in the season and a lot of people, including myself, were mighty pissed at him for failing so miserably.

But, since he took the first puck in the mouth and responded with a good game, it all snowballed from there. He's been better and better. Basically since the Ranger game where his line was lit up like a Christmas tree, (Cogliano a personal -4 for that game) he has been really good overall in the last 7 games. So impressive that we/I can't ignore it anymore. He has 2 goals and 1 assist in the last 3 games and is looking like he may get more in the games to come.

Did suffering through the pucks to the face make him stronger? Did he gain more confidence everytime a player would elbow, face wash or rub him in the face? Did the Boarding call against Turris change his play or mindset?

Don't know these answers, but I think over the last while (and in the future), Cogliano has been answering all these for us.

I'm starting to like the cut of his jib.

I Have Been Shut Down! and Other Random Jambalaya Thoughts

Yes, I am moving to a new house and the internet will be shut off from today till Sunday. Then we are back. So please no crying that OilersJambalaya.com is going anywhere. We're not, I was kidding in the title.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

RANDOM JAMBALAYA

- So what does everyone think of the new OIL TERMINAL podcast? I loved it. I thought that Eric and Scott where really good at it and they seemed to work well together. It was quite enjoyable. I would like some arguing once in a while though. You guys can't always agree. ;) Maybe they need a splash of Smokin' Ray in there?

- When is Gagner going to get signed? WTF is the holdup? Maybe he DID receive some offers from other teams and he's just making the Oilers sweat it out? All I know is I want this kid signed ASAP.

- Notice how I didn't wonder about Cogs? Maybe I'm over him already? Isn't he traded yet?

- How awesome is that that the OKC Barons are coming to Calgary? February 17th the Barons will take on the Abbotsford Heat in Calgary. The Saddledome should be packed for that game. Maybe we will have a OilersJambalaya.com and OilFieldHockey.com meet up at the game?

- Speaking of the Barons, if you have never been there, you should check out okcbarons.com. They have pretty good website that is just waiting to get going once the season starts. The new season is just about ready to get started. GO BARONS GO!

- Finally, the AHL has realeased their schedules for this up coming season. Check it out here.

- I wish I would have listened to Jack Michaels when the Stockton Thunder was playing the Alaska Aces in the Kelly Cup playoffs. I, for obvious reasons, listened to Mike Benton (Stockton's media guy and the Play by Play guy) instead. Mike's been great to us here at OJ, but I am now wishing I checked out Michaels then.

- Also speaking of the Thunder. Check out StocktonThunder.com. Great site and great people running it.

- If you or someone you know is going to the Young Stars tournament, let us know. We want to hear your take on things.

SEE EVERYONE SUNDAY NIGHT!!!

The Silence Is Killing Me / The Edmonton Oilers RFA's

As this off season trickles by, one has to wonder what is up with the Oilers and the restricted free agents.

Has Sam Gagner's agent been talking to Tambellini? What about Gilbert Brule? Did he get an offer yet? What about Andrew Cogliano? Do the Oilers sign him before/if he gets traded? Do both Deslauriers and Dubnyk get a tendered offer? Is only one coming back? Are both coming back? Lot's of questions that need answering.

Like I said in the title, the silence is killing me.

I would hope that Gagner receives an offer before July 1st as I'm sure at least one other team will throw out an offer sheet for him. I like Gagner too much to lose him because the Oilers didn't try hard enough before it's too late. If another team offers $5 million +, the Oilers will be in tough to sign him to that deal. I should point out that Gagner isn't worth $5+, but another team will do what it takes to get him. He is a key cog for the Oilers moving forward.

Vanek, Kessler, Penner and Kessel all were over paid for this reason. Big offer sheets. Let's not have this happen to Gagner. $3.5 million over 5 years is fair and let's move on and get to signing some of the other young players.

I would also hope that they can sign both goalies. I personally would take the chance and send JDD down to OKC. It is possible that they could lose him on waivers, but if he clears, that provides one heck of a goalie for the OKC Barons.

I would keep Dubnyk with the Oilers and have him backup Khabibulin (and Khabibulin's replacement once he gets hurt.) So if I'm the GM and I'm going to try and send down JDD, he only gets a one year deal with no signing bonus (just in case).

I really hope that Marc Pouliot doesn't elect to go to arbitration. I just can't see him making a good enough case to get big dollars. He should just resign to whatever the Oilers offer. He needs to play well this year and make a strong case for himself next year.

Edmonton Oilers A Game Recap / First 1/2 Sucked, Second 1/2 Decent

This is brief game recap of the Edmonton Oilers vs the Detroit Red Wings game on Sportsnet West.

--------------------

I just want to thank everybody for the kind words and warm wishes yesterday for the birth of my second daughter. My family and I really appreciate it and all four of us are home now.

I would also like to thank my wife for being cool about watching the Oilers game after such a long couple of days. She's tired of watching this crap Oilers team and I don't blame her. I am too. But... I'm hardcore and I don't miss many games.

Whitney Gilbert
Chorney Strudwick
Johnson Arsene

--------------------

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- With the Wings up 4-0, it was nice to see the Oilers once again make a last half of the game charge. While the Wings manged to win this game, the Oilers at least tried for a little bit.

- With the loss, the Edmonton Oilers have clinched 30th place in the NHL standings. At worst, the Oilers will get the #2 overall pick at the upcoming 2010 rookie draft.

- Jeff Deslauriers played a pretty decent game. Make sure you watch the highlights, he makes some HUGE saves.

- Mike Comrie was moved to the first line and really had himself a good game. Even after Penner was hurt, Comrie kept up the good playing. He had a goal and an assist.

- Andrew Cogliano is not only getting more ice time, he's making the most of it. He had 2 assists and was a +1. He also led the Oilers with 4 hits. I'm guessing the Oilers are really trying to make him look good to other teams so we can trade him in the summer.

- I really liked how Tom Gilbert played as well. He picks up his first ever NHL multi goal game and lead this team in the 3rd period.  It's just too bad the Oilers didn't win because Gilbert did his part.

- Gilbert Brule did better than his stats suggest. He plays an effective game, but if he's paired with people that make errors, it reflects on Brule.

- Aaron Johnson picks up another point by notching an assist on the Mike Comrie goal. If the Oilers don't re-sign Johnson, I'd be shocked.

- Strudwick and Chorney had some great chances for the Oilers when they were on the ice. WTF?!? They both finished the game +1 and +2 respectively.

The Not So Good:

- Losing a game to a high stick goal is horse crap. Whoever made that call was wrong. Very wrong.

- Getting out shot  44-26 is not very good. Not good at all.

- Not showing up till the half way point sucks even more. Judging by the way the Oilers made plays and scored, this could have been another win for the Oilers over the Wings if they would just play a 60 minute game.

- Johnson, Brule, O'Sullivan and Potulny were each -3. Ouch!

- Dustin Penner took a puck to the eye (he left the game) early in the game but he should be OK to play the next game on Friday.

The Side Dish:

- Only the Stockton Thunder played last night. They won their game and clinched a playoff spot. Good for those guys. Read the Game Recap here.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

THE SHOOTOUT VIDEO

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Devan Dubnyk almost lost his first win with .03 seconds left in the 3rd period. But he didn't. Lucky for him he continued his good play for a full 65 minutes plus the shootout. Devan Dubnyk has a legitimate NHL win under his belt. I couldn't be happier for him. Great job Devan.

- Ryan Whitney scored his first goal as an Oiler tonight. He's been pretty good since we acquired him. I'm still finding him to be a decent pick up in a trade. Especially for a guy like Lubomir Visnovsky. Whitney had 5 shots and 3 blocked shots to go with his goal. I'd say a decent night.

- Andrew Cogliano is a whole different guy right now. You put him on the top line and he performs. He scores a goal and gets an assist on the Whitney goal. This was one of his best games in a long time. He was solid at both ends of the ice. But can he do it again?

- Gilbert Brule has been quietly one of the Oilers most consistent guys all season long. He did it again tonight as he keeps showing that chemistry with Penner and Cogliano. Brule assisted on both Oiler goals and played a good physical game all game. He's, in my opinion, a keeper for next season. You can just tell he wants to be good.

The Not So Good:

- Ethan Moreau is just plain bad. it's like he has no clue on how to play the game anymore. If Comrie was a healthy scratch, I'm going to be very ticked off.

- Theo Peckham is going to take a lot of the blame for the tying goal by not playing the puck properly, but where was the defender watching the back door guy (Rafalski)? Where was Johnson? Horcoff?

- Speaking of Peckham, his partnership with Johnson wasn't so shit hot tonight. Both of them finished a -2 and while they did look good for long periods of time, they had those rookie mistakes that can cause a game to be lost. They have been a good duo and I'd expect them to be a little better next game.

- I really do not like the Minard/Gagner/Stortini line. Either Quinn figures that Gagner is so damn good that he makes others around good or he's really ticked at him? I honestly do not know the answer so I can't tell you either way. I would hope it's because he thinks he's the cats ass.

The Side Dish:

- If you missed it, Jordan Eberle scored a goal in the first minute of his first game with the Springfield Falcons this year. CLICK HERE for the game recap.

- Also tonight the Stockton Thunder had a game to play. They lost to the Utah Grizzles in a very one-sided game by the score of 6-2. The recap will be posted soon on Oilers Jambalaya.

- The Canadian Sledge Hockey team also lost their game tonight. They were playing against Norway for the bronze medal and Norway scored with 3 seconds left. It's a shame because Canada wanted this so bad after being shocked by Japan yesterday. Good try and we still love you guys. GOCANADAGO!

--------------------

DID YOU KNOW? (Facts About The Edmonton Oilers)

Did you know... at this point of the Oilers season, the majority of fans wanted an Detroit win tonight (to be ahead of Calgary in the standings) over Devan Dubnyk to get his first win tonight and not achieve the record for longest in NHL without first win.

Did you know... Gilbert Brule is 3rd on the team in points with 34 points?

Did you know... Devan Dubnyk started in goal 11 times this season, including tonight? That's a lot of games with no win.

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Theo Peckham - Right after the Habs score their 3rd goal to make it 3-2, Peckham takes a very silly holding penalty and gave the Habs even more momentum than they already had from the go ahead goal. And besides that, he was just in the box a few minutes before that which caused the Habs momentum swing in the first place. Bad game for Peckham.
------------------

BEERS

Penner/Cogliano/Brule - Cogliano gets the fortune of acquiring a dynamic duo in Penner and Brule to play on his wings for this game. Penner and Brule have an uncanny chemistry and adding Cogliano's speed and aggressive puck play just made that line fantastic. Split a mini keg boys. Cheers!

Tom Gilbert - He finished the game a +1 and he had two assists and he blocked 4 shots. Not bad for a 5-4 hockey game.  He's done nothing but impress me since his new top pairing role has started. I can see why he wears the "A" once in a while now. He's one of the leaders for this Oilers team now and down the road. He played 27:49 and was good right down to the wire. One frosty cold one, coming up. Cheers!

Chris Minard - The $275,000 AHL hotshot finally makes his Oilers debut. At the start of the game, I had doubts. But within the first three minutes of the game he has a nice give and go with Gagner and he picks up an assist on the goal. He seemed to play well with Gagner and Pouliot. He sure didn't look out of place. He played 10:54. Have a cold frosty mug of Oilers Jambalaya Budweiser. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Aaron Johnson (He played 26:31. Holy crap. He must be dead after a game like that. And he played really good. He ended the night +1.), Shawn Horcoff (He played well with Comrie. Horcoff even scored tonight. Really, he did.), Robert Nilsson (3 shots and a goal for Bobby. I know, it's strange. He was good.), Devan Dubnyk (He played OK. He let in some weak goals and he wasn't spectacular. But that's OK, he made it to the shootout and even did pretty good in that. He still hasn't won his first NHL game yet.)

------------------

JEERS

Taylor Chorney - I didn't like his game tonight and ending up -3 sucks. Sloppy plays and bad passes makes me want to boo him. So I'm going to. BOOOOOOO!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Jason Strudwick (He was looking like he was drowning out there. I'd say I hope he gets better, but who am I kidding.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - The first period was very exciting. Very. Four goals in the first ten minutes was an intense way to start a game. The whole game was good, but that start was great. I knew it was a good game when my pregnant and due wife was even enjoying the game. Not much impresses her lately. lol. So if you missed the game, oh well, you missed the game. That's why we have a recap. ; )

Oh yeah... Ryan Whitney suffered and injury and did not play in the 3rd. The injury bug strikes again.

Paq Twinn - He's M.I.A.

BEERS

Ryan Potulny - He played a good game. When most of the Oilers looked like they were drowning in the deep end, Potulny wasn't. His goal wasn't sweet by any means, but it was a goal. Great game Potsy! How about a cold one? Cheers!

Andrew Cogliano - I liked Cogliano in this game. He has shown that he has the ability to be a gret player. Last night and the other games he's played with Gagner, he's been good. That's what happens when you move him off a line with slugs. Good stuff Cogs. I like it. How about a frosty beer? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Sam Gagner (I liked Gagner. He was an offensive master. He didn't score but had/created some great chances.),

------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - Wow! Another loss. Surpised? No. Booooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): none

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Grebeshkov was the worst Oiler by a long shot. His relapse into complete stupid mode was funny, yet very embarrasing. If you watched the game, you would have seen how bad he actually was. Horcoff was another bad Oiler. What is going on with this guy? Dustin Penner played with two guys who were flying and he looked like a guy with a piano tied to his ass. How is this possible when you are the #1 go to guy on this team? Since the Olympic rosters were announced, he's been the pits.

This team sucks and it get harder to want to cheer for these guys. But what else can we do?

Paq Twinn - Not a good game, of course you wouldn't get that if you only looked at the stats. The Hawks played with the Oilers in the first 40 mins, like a cat plays with a mouse. It was hard to watch, really hard, the Oilers were lucky to not be down by 6 after 2 periods. One day when this team grows up, I hope they're like the Hawks because they are a treat to watch. Game Grade: D

- Who's Out? Who's in? That's a good question.  Brule and Pisani are really sick and won't play. Horcoff is also sick but the Oilers have him in the lineup.  Even with Horcoff and Strudwick in, the Oilers are still one guys short.  It's a little shocking that since the Stockton Thunder (the Springfield Falcons ECHL minor team) is only an hour and a half away, they didn't call up a guy to fill the vacant spot.

- Here the Oilers have not won more than one game in the last 14 games.  That alone is disheartening. Ugh!

GAME VIDEO REPLAY

------------------
BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - It's funny. Just as I was shaking my head that Gagner took a penalty like that in the 3rd, O'SUllivan scores the Oilers first shorthanded goal of the year.  Maybe it was a good timing penalty?

------------------

BEERS

Sam Gagner - Sam was great.  He was all over the place and really did a good job at controlling the play during his shifts.  He and Cogliano made a good play to each other, then Gagner fires it across to Grebeshkov who scores.  Very good chemistry between those two (13 & 89).  While his line did get burned on a goal, it was the Thorton line so we kind of seen it coming.  All in all, a great game for Gagner. He deserves a nice cold beer. Cheers!

Andrew Cogliano - Mr. Speedy was also really good.  Another reason why Quinn needs to never play him with Moreau and Stortini.  Cogs was flying and played the wing really well.  He could have did a little more in the physical department but it's OK, he made plays and generated chances.  How about a frosty Bud? Cheers!

Patrick O'Sullivan - He has been really good for the last few weeks.  It's really nice to see from him.  He's a guy who I really liked in the first few weeks, then he had his slow decent to my naughty list.  Then he became better. Just like that.  He scored a nice goal today and even tossed out 3 hits. I think Patty O' needs a Mug O' Beer. Cheers!

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - It was the Sharks, what did we expect? The Thorton Line and the Setoguchi Line killed the Oilers. If it wasn't for Gagner, Cogliano and O'Sullivan, the Oilers would have really gotten killed. *sigh* I gues we better get used to it. It's going to be a long last half of the season.

Paq Twinn - Sick and missed the game.

Edmonton Oilers - What To Do With The Free Agents?

The Edmonton Oilers have too many Free Agents at the end of this year.  What does Steve Tambellini do about this mess?  Does he just ride it out and try and re-sign as many as he can at the end of the year?  Does he trade them away for equal or better value (or in some cases, no value)?  What to do???

Here is a place to go to see the what the Edmonton Oilers Players are making. (Cap Numbers)

Unrestricted Free Agents

Fernando Pisani UFA ($2.5 million cap hit) I would not keep him.  Sorry, but his time is up here.

Mike Comrie UFA ($1.25 million cap hit) I would not keep him.  His coming home was nice.  But he's not a fit here.

Ryan Stone UFAVI ($600,000 cap hit) I would re-sign him for $1 million a year for two years.  He somehow makes the team better, so we best keep him.

Jason Strudwick UFA ($700,000 cap hit) I would not keep him.  He's slow and he's not able to keep up with most of the plays.  He's a funny guy though.

Dean Arsene UFA ($386,000 cap hit) I would re-sign him to a two way deal for $600,000 a year for two years.  I liked what I saw in his brief stint with the Oilers.

Restricted Free Agents

Sam Gagner RFA ($1.625 million cap hit) I would resign him for no more than $3.5 million a year for 5 years. He just might be the "future" of the Oilers.  Sign him long and cheap.

Andrew Cogliano RFA ($1.133 million cap hit) I would re-sign him for no more than $2 million a year for 3 years. He's a keeper even though I hear he's been shopped around.

Marc Pouliot RFA ($825,000 cap hit)  I don't think I'd keep him either.  Maybe try and include him in a deal this season.

Gilbert Brule RFA ($800,000 cap hit) I would re-sign him to $1 million a year for two years.  He has emerged this year and should have to play well for the next two years and then get rewarded.

JF Jacques RFA ($525,000 cap hit) I would re-sign him for $750,000 a year or under. Great hitter and is a physical player.  As long as his injuries don't keep coming back, he's a keeper.

Ryan Potulny RFA ($595,000 cap hit) I would re-sign him for $750,000 for two years.  I like his style of play.

Liam Reddox RFA ($515,000 cap hit) I would only re-sign him on a two way for under $600,000.  With the rise of Stone and Potulny, he's now expendable. Can he be included in a deal?

Colin MacDonald RFA ($550,000 cap hit) I would re-sign him to a two way for under $600,000 for two years. Good player for the Falcons.

Ryan O'Marra RFA ($1.22 million cap hit inc. bonus) I would re-sign him to a two way for $750,000. Anything more than that and I'd let him walk.  He needs two more years in the minors, at least. And let's be real... $1.22 million a year?  That sounds like a Kevin Lowe contract.

Denis Grebeshkov RFA ($3.15 million cap hit) I would re-sign him for the same amount, $3,150,000 to two year deal.  I like his play, but I think the Oilers would trade him if given a chance. The guys like Chorney are making decisions harder.

Theo Peckham RFA ($600,000 cap hit) I would re-sign him for $750,000 a year over three years.  I like what he brings to the table, but he has lots of room to improve to warrant big money.

Jeff Deslauriers RFA ($625,000 cap hit) I would try and trade him.  If not, then try and re-sign him to a two year deal for $750,000.  He's good, but I like Dubnyk better.  Maybe I'm wrong.

Devan Dubnyk RFA ($700,000 cap hit) I would re-sign him to a three year deal worth $750,000.  I think that in time, he will be better than JDD.  Either way the Oilers will have to decide which of the two they will keep.  Signing Khabibulin to a four year deal makes no sense.  Why lose a good prospect for a set of old balls?

Before anyone freaks out about what I just wrote, there is a lot of work to do with this hockey club.  Trades are sure to happen and no one can predict who's around at the start of next season.  These are just my opinions and I have no idea what the Oilers cap numbers will look like next year.  Granted, if the Oilers were to sign all the people to the deals I have just said, then other people will have to go. I can tell you right now all these deals, plus the existing one's, would put the Oilers over the cap.  I just haven't got that far yet.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

- Oilers roster and lines will remain unchanged from last game.
- Waiting for intro's, anthems and #puckdrop. GOILERS!
- Here we go, this game is underway.
- The pace has been average through the first 5 mins.
- Oilers need to push the pace in games like this. Kings look like tentative.
- With 11 mins remaining in the 1st, the action starts to pick up
- Souray cross checks Williams. Oilers PK 9:27 1st.
- Oilers kill it off. Moreau takes it hard to the net, big crash. Puck may have gone in, but ref waves it off.
- JDD makes a nice glove save. Playing good so far tonight.
- Oilers with good pressure late in 1st. 2 min warning
- Souray with a point shot that goes off Potulny. OILERS SCORE! 1-0 Oilers. 1:50 1st
- The 1st period is over.
- Slow start to this game by both teams. Oilers started to take it to the Kings more in the last 5 mins or so.

2nd PERIOD

- 2nd period is underway.
- Simmonds has scored to tie it up for the Kings. 1-1 Tie Game 12:00 2nd
- Handzus runs Hemmer into the end boards. Hemmer's a little shaken on the play.
- Handzus goes off for Boarding. Oilers PP, Hemmers out there for it.
- Potsy with a quick shot. had good position, in the slot.

- With what Potsy has brought since his call up, I have hard time seeing Nilsson sticking around much longer
- Brule and Horcoff combine for a nice chance. 7:20 2nd
- Pens gets tripped up, but its Gags that goes off for tripping Kopitar. Oilers PK 7:13 2nd
- Refs even it up. Frolov for tripping. 4on4 7:00 2nd
- Hemmer has left the bench and gone to the trainers room. Didn't feel right after the hit by Handzus.
- Quick flashes the leather on Patty-O's shot.
- Patty-O gets caught on a pick play. 2 min for interference. Oilers PK 2:32 2nd
- Things get heated as JDD freeze's the puck. Open season on Handzus, for hit on Hemmer.
- Patty-O gets the puck coming out of the box. Creates a chance and draws a penalty.
- Jones goes off for 2. :16 2nd
- After 2, its tied at 1 between the Oilers and the Kings
- Oilers to push the play more consistantly in the 3rd. That was a much better period for both teams.

3rd PERIOD

- 3rd period is underway. Oilers start with PP for 1:44.

- Back to 5on5 as Cogs continues to have a good game, draws a penalty
- Simmonds 2 for holding. Oilers PP 8:41 3rd.
- Oilers can't get set up on the PP. Missing Hemmer big time.
- Kings, russian rookie, Lotionov gets nailed. Shaken up on the bench.
- 5 min to go in 3rd.

BEERS

The 4th Line (Moreau/Cogliano/Potulny) - This line played like the #1 line.  I liked these guys tonight.  Potulny scores with a tip from a Souray blast.  Cogliano was a speed demon with license to kill.  And Moreau... the man looked like a bonafide NHL player.  What is going on here?  These three misfits combine for one super line.  Ok.  Maybe not super. But they were pretty good.  Here's a mini keg to spilt.  What?  There's still a recession going on. Cheers Boys!

Jeff Deslauriers - He had a good game.  It's too bad that the guys up front didn't play hard the entire game.  I did think that the Greene goal was a soft goal for JDD.  He should have seen it the whole way.  But despite that, he did ok in my books.  Maybe this (being the starter with Habbi being hurt) is a turning point in his career?  How about a cold one?  Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Shawn Horcoff (He looked real good and was full of jam. *sends quarter to MacT* He some what made an impact to this game and that's the kind of effort the team needs from him.), Tom Gilbert (He had a solid game.  He didn't create a whole lot, but didn't give much up either.), Sam Gagner (He was dominant in the faceoffs and had a big night but finished -2 and the Oilers lost.), Sheldon Souray (He played mean and rough.  He had nice shots and picked up an assist because of one of them.),

------------------

JEERS

The Lack Of Effort- No one was bad enough to boo tonight.  I just wish the team would have had more effort in the 2nd.  Well I guess the lack of effort once again this game is worth a boo now that I think of it. Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S):

-------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - This guy was actually good.  *spit*  I liked the other guy that I was yelling at last week.  *not really

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - Paq picked a good one here.  No play... no screwing up.  But he is skating again and may be back soon.  Yikes!

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Sam Gagner was the little train that couldn't tonight.  He had the game in his hands more than twice and just couldn't quite get it done.  Tonight was his chance to be a game breaker and he fell short.  It's to bad too because he was flying in the 3rd.  I actually thought that the team was pretty good.  But it seemed like a boring game up until the middle of the 3rd.  Then the game got going.  O'Sullivan played good but still can't do squat.  I'm starting to wonder now who will go when all the guys (Stone, Pouliot, Nilsson, Grebeshkov) get healthy again?  Who goes?  *cough... nils... cough... son*  But this was a game that the Oilers should have and needed to win and didn't. Quinn is going to lose his mind soon.  These guys better get better.  Oh... and Tambo needs to figure sh*t out in a hurry.  ON A SIDE NOTE:  If Hemsky goes down for a few games, does that constitute as an emergency?  Hint, hint. EBERLE!

Paq Twinn - Decent game tonight, until it mattered most in the 3rd. The Oilers let the Kings do as they pleased. Through it all JDD had another great outing as a starter. Cogs also had a good game. Pens was kinda quiet and Gags, man wheve you gone? He's not a liability so much, but the #'s just aren't there anymore. Which brings me to this, there are a few 20 goal scorers that aren't even close to that pace. Patty-O, Cogs, Horc, Hemmer and even Gags should score 20 or more but are nowhere near that pace. Another 2 points lost due to lack of secondary scoring. Game Grade: C

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- It looks like the lines won't change, they will be the same as last game.  Staios, Souray, Pisani, Peckham and Pouliot are all hurt and cannot play.  Nilsson and MacIntyre are healthy scratches.

- Does it bug anyone else that Pittsburgh is using and advertising the "City of Champions" slogan as their own?  It's pisses me off.

BAD TIMING PENALTY™

Denis Grebeshkov - Just when the team needed to press on for the win... you take a stupid tripping penalty at 15:49. Not cool.

------------------

GOAT WATCH™

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - Did he even play tonight?  He didn't get a penalty so it's hard to notice him.  He really did nothing other than a sweet pass to Cogliano on the Oilers 1st goal.  Check the stats.  No hits, no shots.  Just 1 giveaway and 1 takeaway.  Yeah Goat!

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - He ate 3 tubs of popcorn and drank 2 Gatorade's.  In the press box.

------------------

BEERS

Nikolai Khabibulin - He was awesome.  He did everything but score the goals.  I thought that he was maybe a little nervous in the 1st, but really came into his own for the rest of the game.  Nice to see someone wanted to show up tonight.  By far the best Oiler tonight.  Great game Khabi.  Frosty beer? It's a cold one... Cheers!

Andrew Cogliano - 58% on the dot tonight.  That's a huge acclompishment for him.  He's used to being under 40%.  He scored a nice goal in the 1st and kept trying all game.  I thought he did well.  What is it with the 4th line?  It turns you intoo gold.  Good Job Cogs.  How about a light beer?  Cheers!

Dustin Penner - Once again he has almost a sleeper game while getting a goal and an assist.  How is he doing it?  Good job Penner.  You can have a Pilsner.  Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Taylor Chorney (Again the rookie was good.  Maybe he should stay around and send Staios packing?)

------------------

JEERS

JF Jacques - Only 3 hits?  That's it? I'm starting to think that you were a 5 game fluke.  Will that Jacques please show up?  Boooooooo!

Lubomir Visnovsky - Trying to hard to do to much.  He needs to just play his game.  I understand that he's still a little gun shy with the shoulder.  I don't blame him, but geez man.  Your one of best guys on defence.  It's a good thing the season is still young.  Boooooooo!

Sam Gagner - While he did look good out there, he really wasn't.  He lost every faceoff and was a -2.  Now I don't understand where his game went.  He was dynamite, now's he juggling it.  I don't get it.  Get better Junior.  Booooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): The Rest Of The Team (You guys need to not get out shot all the time.  How about trying being the other team for once?)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - I thought that the Oilers were pretty stinky.  I can't stand these last minute finishes that always seem to follow this team.  If it wasn't for Khabi, this game would have been a lot worse.  I was a little surprised that Quinn was shuffling the lines in the 2nd.  I mean really... why put O'Sullivan with 10 and 83?  Penner goes there.  Why does Quinn refuse to play him there?  I'm sure the Oilers deserve a bag skate after that performance.  Go ahead Quinn... do it.

Graham Martin - (He said this on Facebook tonight) Now that was a frustrating game to watch. I don't mind when they get beat by a better team, but the effort was not there at all tonight. They lost most battles, senseless turnovers by just not being strong enough on the puck, and no support, and no pressure. The hawks tonight played the kinda game the oilers need to play, speed through the neutral zone and PRESSURE! The forcheck, save for a few spots, was just not there tonight. And Hemsky needs to show me something. He wants to be the guy, but it sure doesn't look like it on the ice. So many giveaways, and so many shots blocked. And that chance in the second i think where he missed the net point blank, well, if you are a superstar, down in a game, you just don't do that. He needs to use his speed, and try moving the puck through the neutral zone for a change instead of carrying it himself and forcing his linemates to wait for him at the blueline. And the last thing that seriously needs work, is how the forwards drop down so deep in their own end and leave the points so wide open. It was like that from the first shift of the game. Ethan Moreau is the worst and he just chases that puck around whereever it goes when he is penalty killing and gets caught out of position so often. The pluses for me were Cogliano, had a very good game, lots of speed and one of the forwards that actually got a forcheck going, Penner with two points and so much hard work infront of the net on the grebeshkov goal, and Khabby was very solid other than the versteeg goal but even then i can't really blame him.
