Player Movement Begins, Brad Moran Reportedly Headed To Sweden

Originally reported by Smålandsposten and then reported by other Swedish outlets, it looks like Brad Moran will be heading back to Sweden to play for Vaxjo Lakers HC. The Lakers will be making their debut in the Elitserien this season after earning their promotion from HockeyAllsvenskan last season.

Moran had played for Skellefteå AIK previous to signing with the Oilers and playing for the Barons this last season. Moran had 71 points in 79 games with the Barons and 82 points in 110 games with Skellefteå AIK over two seasons. Other centers Ryan O'Marra and Chris VandeVelde both got Oilers callups ahead of Moran during the season. It's definitely going to be a difficult spot to fill for the Barons, as Moran had been the team's best center throughout most of the year.

EDIT: Vaxjo Lakers HC put out a press release stating that Brad Moran has indeed signed a two-year contract with them.

What's In A Number?

As I watch these last few games, I'm starting to notice that the little things are bugging me. Here's some examples of what I mean;

Why is Khabibulin starting again? Isn't MacIntyre supposed to kick the crap out of somebody? Why does Brule keep trying to comeback? Does Fraser ever improve as a player? Ever? Is Cogliano for real the best player out there? And for the love of god, why is Khabibulin starting again?!? (*Editors note: For the record, Dubnyk starts tomorrow. I'm just being sarcastic*)

But what is really bugging me lately is the stupid numbers the Oilers give these kids in training camp without considering who may or may not be called up during the season. Most stories you hear from players is that the team gave them their numbers when they joined the organization, so that's what they wear now. Makes you wonder, how did Giroux get #12 this year? Or Ondrus get #25? Or Moran as #20? Or even Petiot with #37? Was this the teams choice, or the players? Why are they special?

It's strange that they gave those four lower numbers even though they got passed up on for call ups all year long. While the rest of the "also good prospects" get odd ball numbers like #42 or #58 or #54 or #56.

Don't get me started on why in the hell Peckham is wearing #49. I can almost guarantee that's not his "number". Yet he still wears it? Come on Oilers!

I can see the prospects that have no chance getting to the show taking an odd ball number like say Brandon Davidson, but a kid like Jeff Petry shouldn't be playing 30+ games as an Oiler with #58 on his back. Give him a proper number (unless he actually likes #58) and make him part of the team officially. Nothing sticks out a rookie for the other team like a stupid number on his back.

I've noticed that there is no number yet for Colten Teubert on the Oilers site. Will he get to choose his own number or will he get an odd ball given to him for next year? I'm going to guess he gets a low number like #8.

I'm curious to know how giving out numbers really works for the Oilers. How does it get determined who gets what? Who picks the numbers?

Barons Game 4 Recap; Barons W-I-N!

Finally, finally, finally, the Barons get a win. After so many failed chances, the Barons were able to score on the PP, score more than one goal in a game, and keep everyone wondering if they would pull it off all the way to the end.

First Period
-God, this period sucked. Just like Friday night, the team started strong and had a couple good chances in the early minutes, but couldn't keep it going. Just over 3 minutes in, Colin McDonald and David Liffiton tried to fight. Liffiton over-commited in his grab and they both tumbled to the ice. No real big hits from either one. The Barons PP woes continued after the Monsters got a Delay of Game penalty and weren't able to convert. Then, to make things worse, after a Hooking call to Mike Carman, the Monsters scored not one, but two shorthanded goals in 1:06. So now, not only could we not score but we were getting scored on. The first goal, I think Gerber could have had. The second, he had his leg extended and Van der Gulik hit it a couple times, but finally was able to lift it over Gerber's leg. And after one, the Barons were down 0-2.

Second Period
-So after the crowd got taken out of the game pretty early, it was tough to get much going. Coach Nelson reworked the lines a little bit, getting them more to how they were in Friday's game. 2:44 into the period though, the Monsters struck again. I can't blame Gerber for this one. I could see the lane perfect from my seat; Liffiton shot from the blue line with 4-5 guys between him and Gerber. A huge screen and Gerber didn't even move until the puck was in the net. That was a tough one. After another PP that they couldn't score on and a fight that didn't result in much between Plante and Zach Cohen, the Barons finally broke through at the 11:25 mark with a shot from Moran that got past Monsters goaltender John Grahame. At the 13:55 mark, the Monsters were called for a Too Many Men penalty. After fully expecting the Monsters to be able to kill this one off as well, Moran proves me wrong after a Giroux shot rebounded and landed right in front of Moran's stick. Moran just tapped the puck into the open net to finally get a PPG for the Barons. The second period would end with a 3-2 Monsters lead.

Third Period
The third period was just a big blur. Very few stoppages. I was starting to lose hope after 15 minutes and there not really being any huge chances so far. Then finally, at the 15:36 mark, Moran gets his hat trick. Not just any old hat trick though. A pure hat trick. How much better can you get for a franchise's first hat trick in history? The crowd was roaring. Down 3-0 and to come back like that was huge. I was fully expecting that the team would just play to hold the tie, and try to get the win in OT. Am I glad I was wrong. Three minutes later, Omark gets a pass from Reddox and beats Grahame. I've never heard 3000 people that loud. Then, to just make things interesting, the ref decides to hand out a boarding penalty to Belle, after letting a lot worse calls go. A 52 second penalty kill to end the game and the team stepped up. The Monsters had one real chance, but Gerber was able to kick it away. The crowd was on it's feet for most of the PK, and only got louder with each clear. 4-3 the final score and the first win for the Barons is in the books!

The Barons hopped on a bus after the game and headed to Houston to cap off their three game set. Preview is coming up.

Building Up The OKC Barons With Talent

After much complaining and belly aching by mostly myself, it appears that the Edmonton Oilers seem to be finally focusing on the OKC Barons team. ABOUT TIME I SAY!

I'm a strong believer that the Edmonton Oilers really need to help the Oklahoma City Barons get going properly as this is the 1st season ever for this franchise. This is the most important year for the Barons. This is where a fan-base is won or lost so it's important to establish your brand and market it properly. Sure having a new team in town will bring in some fans right off the bat. We seen that with just the logo's being discovered to the actual revealing of the logo, jersey and brand. The excitement that day was off the hook.

But then the fizzle fizzled, and in order to progress properly, you need to keep that fizzle. You need to have fans and media excited and buzzing. You need to find a way to keep fans entertained. I'm not really talking about promotions and the other stuff. I'm talking a solid on ice product. The OKC Barons need a competitive team right out of the gate and with a little hard work, it can be done.

However to this this day the Oklahoma City Barons are without a GM, Head Coach and a coaching staff. They basically have been at a stand still for a while now and it's getting imperative that they need to decide on who's General Manager very, very soon.

But in the meantime Tamby has been doing some great work in signing some very skilled AHL veterans. Here is what he has done so far.

On July 2nd the Barons/Oilers acquired 27 year old Defenceman Richard Petiot. He played last season with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL.  In 80 games he had 8 goals, 29 assists for 37 points. He has played in 13 NHL games posting three assists. If Petiot plays in OKC he will make $125,000 and if he plays with the Oilers, he makes $550,000.

Then the next day they picked up 29 year old Left Wing, Alexandre Giroux from free agency. Giroux played with the Hershey Bears in the AHL collecting 103 points (50G, 50A) in 69 games. He also played in 9 games with the Washington Capitals scoring 1goal and 2 assists. His one year deal is worth a whopping $500,000 regardless of where he plays. NHL and AHL payment is the same. He better be worth the cash. I would assume he's the "name" guy for the Barons. Unless of course they send down Eberle or Paajarvi to start the year down there.

Next on July 7th the Oilers/Barons picked up 31 year old center Brad Moran. Last season with Skelleftea HC in the Swedish Elite League, Moran scored 40 points (14G, 26A) in 55 games. Not bad. His contract is for one year and he will bring some leadership to a new Barons lineup.

Ben Ondrus was signed next on July 9th. Last year the 28 year old Right Wing scored 17 points (10G, 7A) in 57 games with the Toronto Marlies (Also was the Captain). In 11 games with the Maple Leafs, Ondrus was held pointless but had 34 penalty minutes. His contract is a another one year deal by the Barons/Oilers. He will be paid $130,000 in the AHL and $550,000 in the NHL.

Yesterday the Barons/Oilers came to terms with forward Colin McDonald and defenceman Jake Taylor. Both of these guys were with the Springfield Falcons last season and will be playing in OKC for sure. Hence why the press release states that these two are the first official signings for the Barons. Make no mistake, every player that I have mentioned in this article will be with the OKC Barons at the start of the season. These are all Barons signings even though Giroux has a 1 way deal. If anything, the better players will be the call ups and nothing more.

Basically Steve Tambellini has created a pretty solid complete line for the Barons. That's a good start. Expensive line, but a good start. Over the next few weeks we will see more guys get signed and the OKC Barons roster will start to take shape.

But seriously Tamby, focus on getting that General Manager for the Barons. One would think a GM and Head Coach are the most important pieces, no?
