Here at Oilers Jambalaya, we would like to extend our congratulations to the Los Angeles Kings on becoming the 2012 Stanley Cup Champions.
We also congratulate former Edmonton Oiler players Jarrett Stoll, Matt Greene, Dustin Penner and Colin Fraser on a job well done.
We also can't forget goaltending coach Bill Ranford either. He's obviously done a wonderful job helping Jonathon Quick find his Conn Smythe performance.
Congrats Kings! You deserve it.

How Does He Feel Right Now? A Year Later
It's no secret to Oiler fans on how and why Ryan Smyth became an Oiler for the second time in his career last year. He asked the LA Kings for a trade to Edmonton.
He simply wanted to come "home".
Now that his former team is one win away from winning the greatest championship a professional player could ever win (IMHO), how does he feel now about his decision now? Any regrets?
It would probably bug me to death watching my former teammates win the Stanley Cup without me, especially if you have never won before. I couldn't imagine how crushing that would feel.
I feel bad for Ryan Smyth. I really do. His former team will win the cup, and his current team finished 2nd to last in the league.
Bottom line, it was his choice to come back, but it still sucks to have to watch this.
Who knows... maybe he's not even tuning in?

Ryan Smyth Is Home! The Mullet Returns
Smyth will help the young Oilers like no other person could. He's going to show them what it takes to be an Oiler. What it takes to be the best. We have our leader back and it's about damn time! All is well in Oil Country.
On a side note. Sad to see Colin Fraser go. He was a decent player for us but just never worked out like planned. I wish him luck in the future as I have no idea if the Kings will buy him out or not.
THE MULLET IS BACK!!!!

Sheldon Souray or Ryan Smyth?
The salary cap is going up for next season and the Oilers do need to add some salary to the payroll to make the cap floor. Souray, if willing to play here, can fill the cap void. Maybe that's why the Oilers have yet to buy him out?
Word today from Bob McKenzie is that Ryan Smyth has told the Kings that he would like to play in Edmonton next year. If a trade can be done, he wants to come home. HOLY CRAP!!! I'd take him in a heartbeat. No questions asked. Smyth is everything an Oiler should be.
Smyth back in Etown would bring the cap up by $6.5 million next season and would make the cap restrictions all better again. He has 1 year left on his current deal.
If the Smyth trade can happen, then see ya Souray. If not, it's damn possible #44 is back on the blueline next season. Ugh! BRING BACK SMYTH!!!

Devan Dubnyk Relegated To #3 For Team Canada?
It was clear that that was the current situation when Jonathan Bernier became the Canadian backup two games ago (plus he started and won one of those games). Once the Los Angeles Kings were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs, Bernier joined the Canadians for the WHC. That gave the Canadians 3 goaltenders, so it wasn't hard to do the math. But still...
Dubnyk made himself quite clear before the tournament started that he had no desire to be the #3 goalie this time around. That was a spot he graciously filled the last time he came to play with Canada at the WHC.
Dubnyk was the backup for 3 games at this tournament and he did play in one game for 13:50 in the 3rd period. He made 8 saves and let in no goals.
This situation makes me disappointed with Team Canada. Where's the loyalty? Why not give him a chance at playing a full game before this decision was made? What the hell?
I feel bad for Devan. He didn't deserve this.

Story Lines For Tonight / Oilers vs Kings
- As we all know, Dustin Penner is facing the Oilers tonight in what should be an emotional game for Penner. He went through a lot with the Oilers and while no doubt going to the Kings was refreshing for him, this game should bring back the memoriesm (good and bad) that he's had with this hockey club. It will be interesting to see him in a Kings jersey.
- Rod Phillips is calling it a career after tonight's game. This will be his last game ever for the Oilers. After 37 years he's finally walking off into the Arizona sunset. I'm going to miss Rod and the way he calls games. He truly is a classic element of the Edmonton Oilers organization. Good luck in the future Rod, Oil Country loves you!
- Nik Khabibulin will get the start in net tonight. Not sure why. Dubnyk needs the development time so why waste 60 minutes on a drunk bag of bones? Pfft! WE WANT DUBNYK!
- The same lines as last game are expected to be iced tonight.
- Watch for the Kings Jarret Stoll to score the game winning goal tonight. He's scored 2 out of 3 goals in this season series so far. Can he go 3 for 4?

THE MEAT AND POTATOES
Game Notes:
- The Oilers started the game on fire. Then by the halfway through the first it was all Kings. The Kings really applied the pressure on the Oilers. But, the 1st ended 1-0 for the Oilers despite being out-shot by the Kings.
- The 2nd period still wasn't good for the Oilers. The Kings again came out ready to beat the Oilers. Despite taking a ton of shots at Dubnyk, they couldn't score. The Oilers did however. It was 2-0 after the 2nd period was over.
- Even though the Oilers again scored early in the 3rd, the Kings were still taking it to them. Bam! Bam! It`s a 3-2 game. Bam! Now it's a 3-3 tie game. Holy crap! It was looking like the Oilers were going to implode once again, but the game went to overtime.
- Overtime settled nothing and the shootout was next. Potulny and Horcoff score to win it for the Oilers.
The Good:
- Devan Dubnyk was really good tonight. He faced 55 shots and had a shutout going into the 3rd period. I decided just for fun to see who people would choose. So I asked the people that were around for the TweetCast who they would keep if they had to pick, Dubnyk or Deslauriers. 10 people chose Dubnyk and 1 chose Deslauriers. I was one of the 10 that picked DD.
- Mike Comrie was the man tonight. Partly because Hillary Duff was at the game. He ALWAYS plays well when she is there. With 2 goals on 3 shots, I'd say Mike was on fire, or just a show off. I wonder if the Oilers are going to bring him back for another year? I don't think I'd be opposed to it. For a guy who I hated so much, I no longer have that hate for Mike.
- Tom Gilbert is easily the most improved player in the last half of the season. Ever since Ryan Whitney came into his life, he's be terrific. He scores a goal and has 2 assists tonight and led the team with 4 blocked shots. That's a great effort on his part.
- Ryan Whitney is slowing becoming one of my Jib cutters. He's a real key cog in helping Gilbert turn the page. He had 2 assists and was +2 tonight.
- Marc Pouliot was the best at faceoffs tonight at 50%. Other than that, he did squat.
- The "New Bash Brothers" Arsene and Johnson were pretty dominant in the hitting department. Johnson had 5 hits and Arsene had 4 hits.
The Not So Good:
- The Oilers were out-shot 55-16. I can not believe they won a game while getting destroyed in shots.
- The Chorney/Strudwick train wreck was in full force tonight. Chorney made a weak pass on his first shift and never looked back. Both guys ended up -2 each. I don't want either one of these guys back.
- The play that caused the penalty shot that Whitney took was bad. He gave the puck away at the Kings bklueline and then rushed back and grabbed Modin and hauled him down in front of DD. Good thing Dubnyk saved that penalty shot.
The Side Dish:
- The Edmonton Oilers website has a draft simulator. Try it here. It's kind of fun.
- The Springfield Falcons lost in a 7-5 game to the Wolf Pack. Click here for the recap.

BAD TIMING PENALTY
None - It could have been Horcoff, but that was a non-call even though the ref's thought different.
------------------
BEERS
Sheldon Souray - Big sexy had a goal and an assist tonight. He played pretty good and seemed ready to play hockey. Not only did he have 4 good shots on net, he played a whopping 21:38. He was once again the leader for this Oiler squad. Is there anything he can't do? Great game Shelly. How about a frosty Bud? Cheers!
Ryan Potulny - He also played pretty good for a guy that had somewhat sub par linemates. He scores a goal and picks up an assist on the Souray goal. It's easy to get points when you win the faceoff and get it to Shelly. But all in all... Ryan played a pretty good game. How about a ice cold Canadian? Cheers!
Nilsson/Horcoff/Stone line - I'll be honest. I didn't think this line would do anything together. I guess I was wrong. They were great. They created some real good chances but couldn't finish them off. But I suspect that Quinn will keep these guys together for a bit. It's funny because who would have thought that Nilsson and Stone would be a dynamic duo? I didn't. Good game for a good line. Split a six pack? Cheers!
Penner/Gagner/Brule line - Also, another great line tonight. They were pretty dominant but couldn't beat Quick. Penner and Brule are also quite the duo. They just seem to find each other. Maybe next game they dominate on the score sheet? Penner just keeps playing well. You guys can also split a six pack. Cheers!
HONORABLE MENTION(S): Ladislav Smid (He played a pretty solid game.), Steve Staios (He also wasn't bad at all. No it's not a misprint.), Tom Gilbert (He made little mistakes and when you play a game and not get noticed... that's good thing for a defenceman.)
------------------
JEERS
Patrick O'Sullivan - The guy was benched for a lot of this game. He had 3 giveaways and Quinn had enough and pulled the plug on him. He only played 8:41. What's going on Sully? At least you tried at the beginning of the season. Boooooo!
Pat Quinn - I get the fact that O'Sullivan sucks right now and was benched. But why sit Stortini? He was a force and is riding high on confidence. And he gets punished for being on O'Sullivan's line? What gives? Nevermind the fact that Stone and Nilsson get promoted and Storts is stuck on the bench. Ummm.... Mr Quinn sir. Stortini was the one with the Gordie Howe hat trick. So why not play the guy? This just may be the only time I do this. Booooooo!
Denis Grebeshkov - Wow was he rusty tonight. He was brutal bad. I kind of felt sorry for him out there. I couldn't believe that he played that bad, but he did miss quite a few games with an injury. He was the main cause of the Kings first goal and really looked out of place all night. I'm sure he'll get better by next game. Booooooo!
Lubomir Visnovsky - How is it possible to go from hero to zero in one game? I don't know but he did it. The worst Oiler tonight by far. Ugh! Booooooo!
-------------------
OUR GAME SUMMARIES
Smokin' Ray - I hate that. But we all knew it was coming. The Oilers always seem to find a way to blow a lead. I should look and see how many games the Oilers were winning or tied in the last 5 minutes and lost. I bet it's a high number. I did however enjoy the LIVE interactive TweetCast. Paq and I had fun it's it nice to offer something new to the fans of Oilers Jambalaya. So there you have it. Oilers sucked... TweetCast awesome.
Paq Twinn - Games like this really leave a bad taste in my mouth. I really felt like the Oilers were going to pull this one out. They skated hard , hit regularly and had the Kings running around in their own zone most of the night. A couple stupid mistakes end up in the back of the net. ouch. Patty-O is really struggling, so bad that Quinn benched him in the 3rd. I think Potsy is ahead of Patty on the depth chart noe, he had a great goal to tie the game at 2 a piece. Pens couldn't buy a goal tonight , he had many marvelous chances but couldn't beat J.Quick. Maybe he should have gone through Quick once or twice, too bad he doesn't have a mean streak. Horc's line played well, but I'd have to give the BTP to him. He killed a PP in the final minutes of the 3rd. Which brings me to this. Can anyone remember, not looking it up but remember, the last Oilers PP goal? I can't but if I had to guess, Hemmer got an assist on it. Tonights Game Grade: B+

BEERS
The 4th Line (Moreau/Cogliano/Potulny) - This line played like the #1 line. I liked these guys tonight. Potulny scores with a tip from a Souray blast. Cogliano was a speed demon with license to kill. And Moreau... the man looked like a bonafide NHL player. What is going on here? These three misfits combine for one super line. Ok. Maybe not super. But they were pretty good. Here's a mini keg to spilt. What? There's still a recession going on. Cheers Boys!
Jeff Deslauriers - He had a good game. It's too bad that the guys up front didn't play hard the entire game. I did think that the Greene goal was a soft goal for JDD. He should have seen it the whole way. But despite that, he did ok in my books. Maybe this (being the starter with Habbi being hurt) is a turning point in his career? How about a cold one? Cheers!
HONORABLE MENTION(S): Shawn Horcoff (He looked real good and was full of jam. *sends quarter to MacT* He some what made an impact to this game and that's the kind of effort the team needs from him.), Tom Gilbert (He had a solid game. He didn't create a whole lot, but didn't give much up either.), Sam Gagner (He was dominant in the faceoffs and had a big night but finished -2 and the Oilers lost.), Sheldon Souray (He played mean and rough. He had nice shots and picked up an assist because of one of them.),
------------------
JEERS
The Lack Of Effort- No one was bad enough to boo tonight. I just wish the team would have had more effort in the 2nd. Well I guess the lack of effort once again this game is worth a boo now that I think of it. Boooooo!
HONORABLE MENTION(S):
-------------------
GOAT WATCH
(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - This guy was actually good. *spit* I liked the other guy that I was yelling at last week. *not really*
(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - Paq picked a good one here. No play... no screwing up. But he is skating again and may be back soon. Yikes!
-------------------
OUR GAME SUMMARIES
Smokin' Ray - Sam Gagner was the little train that couldn't tonight. He had the game in his hands more than twice and just couldn't quite get it done. Tonight was his chance to be a game breaker and he fell short. It's to bad too because he was flying in the 3rd. I actually thought that the team was pretty good. But it seemed like a boring game up until the middle of the 3rd. Then the game got going. O'Sullivan played good but still can't do squat. I'm starting to wonder now who will go when all the guys (Stone, Pouliot, Nilsson, Grebeshkov) get healthy again? Who goes? *cough... nils... cough... son* But this was a game that the Oilers should have and needed to win and didn't. Quinn is going to lose his mind soon. These guys better get better. Oh... and Tambo needs to figure sh*t out in a hurry. ON A SIDE NOTE: If Hemsky goes down for a few games, does that constitute as an emergency? Hint, hint. EBERLE!
Paq Twinn - Decent game tonight, until it mattered most in the 3rd. The Oilers let the Kings do as they pleased. Through it all JDD had another great outing as a starter. Cogs also had a good game. Pens was kinda quiet and Gags, man wheve you gone? He's not a liability so much, but the #'s just aren't there anymore. Which brings me to this, there are a few 20 goal scorers that aren't even close to that pace. Patty-O, Cogs, Horc, Hemmer and even Gags should score 20 or more but are nowhere near that pace. Another 2 points lost due to lack of secondary scoring. Game Grade: C

I was talking with Paq Twinn today and we started in on Frolov and the troubles that he is having right now in La La Land. Could he be a fit on our 1st line with Hemsky and Horcoff we wondered? What would it take to acquire a guy like him and how much would the Oilers be willing to give? Would he adapt to Quinn & Co or would he be as complacent as they say he is in LA? These are all questions that need answering. Here's what I found...
Coach Terry Murray had this to say about Alexander Frolov before benching him against the Stars, "Frolov is out. That’s really a hard one. You don’t want to take your best players out of the lineup. That’s how you win games. Your best players have to be the best every night in this game. It’s such a competitive division, a competitive conference, a competitive league, that you just have to have your top guys on their ‘A’ game every night in order to give yourself an opportunity to win. It’s a hard thing, but those are the demands that the players have to meet."
“I haven’t been happy with Fro’s game for several games. The game the other night is the straw that broke the camel’s back, in my opinion. The turnovers, the careless play… It has to be better, and you have to come out with that high level of intensity, with smart work, hard work, and you’ve got to love the game. You’ve got to love the game in order to be a player. The talent is there, but it always is the work that brings out talent. And I need more."
GM Dean Lombardi had this to say about Frolov, "He’s either going to get on board or we’ll go in another direction with him. It’s as simple as that. I like a lot of the things I’m seeing, with what we’re trying to establish here. Get or board, or there’s another way too. But like I said, this is not a knee-jerk reaction.’’
Talk about a public lashing a'la MacT. Ouch! We all know how that plays out. Time for a change Frolov. Come to E-Town. Just bring a winter coat.

Why is Frolov not on the LA Kings depth chart? Anyone else find that strange?
So it appears that LA might be close to done with this guy. Should the Oilers take a crack at him? Is it worth it? I think so and here's why.
Alexander Frolov. He's 6'2" and 208 lbs. In 6 years of playing with the Kings (not including this year) he's scored 14, 24, 21, 35, 23 and 32 goals respectively. That's an average of 24.83 goals per year. Now imagine for a second that he had Hemsky passes. Imagine the kind of damage that those two could do. He could be at 35 goals a year consistently with Hemsky. He has the size that Quinn wants on every line, but can he use it to his advantage a'la Penner? That's a good question that needs to be answered.
The part I liked about what Murray said was this, "Frolov is out. That’s really a hard one. You don’t want to take your best players out of the lineup." I guess it would be safe to say that the Oilers could acquire a real good player in Frolov. One of LA's best. That's a plus for sure.
Here is another question. He has yet to play in the NHL playoffs so we have no idea what kind of person he is at that time of year. Does that worry a GM when he's dealing for a player?
---------------------
Ok, so maybe now your a little more open to the idea of bringing him here (pretend for the sake of argument please). What do the Oilers give up? How much space ($) is there?
The Kings have about 4.5 million in cap space and the Oilers have about 1 million left in space. With Frolov at a 2.9 cap hit the Oilers really only need to make 2 million in space. Keeping this in mind, here is what I offer.
I would offer Robert Nilsson ($2 million cap hit), D Cody Wild (minors) and a 4th round pick.
With that deal done, the Oilers will have about $200,000 left in cap space (not including a roster move to the minors). So it is possible to do. But I'm not the one pulling the strings (only wish). However, they may want Pisani instead of Nilsson and that's ok too. They have the space to take both of them if they wanted, but I doubt that would happen. Hell, I'd throw in Reddox as well if need be.
The bad part of the story... He's a UFA at the end of the season.
So is that too much to give to LA? Is it not enough? Is it worth it for the Oilers to pursue? I hope this gave everyone something to think about. I'd make the deal. Would you?
Get it done Tambo!
