BEERS & JEERS PLAYER GRADES

The Cult of Hockey Grading System:
10 perfect game, 9 extraordinary, 8 great, 7 good, 6 above average,
5 average, 4 below average, 3 poor, 2 terrible, 1 deserves to be in minors.

#2 JIM VANDERMEER - (0) DNP (Injured)

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (3) JEERS His giveaway caused the game winning goal. Oy! He was -2 and only took 2 shots on goal. He needs to shoot more like he has if he wants to score. Not a great night.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (4) I wasn't a fan of his tonight. He was -2 and only had 2 hits and 2 blocked shots. He could have been more physical for sure. What happened to the spaz from last year?

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (6) He was OK. They gave him 2nd star. He scores his 2nd goal and this time it was a for sure thing. Nice shot. He played 26:43 and had 3 hits, 2 blocked shots but had 2 giveaways. The giveaways don't shock me as much anymore because he plays a ton. Bound to happen with all that ice time.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (0) DNP (Injured)

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (6) BEERS I liked his effort ad\nd he tried hard to make things happen. He was 6/4 for 60% on faceoffs. He picked up an assist on the Whitney goal (cheesy assist as he barely did anything other than touch it as it went to Whitney. But the highlight of his game? A team high 4 hits.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (3) JEERS He started out good but faded into the sunset. He was very quiet on the stat sheet as he only had 1 shot. You can't be on the top line and not register anything.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (4) Hard to tell if he even played. The 4th line stunk. He had 2 shots and 2 hits and went 2/2 for 50% on faceoffs. Not much else to report on Fraser.

#22 JF JACQUES - (2) JEERS DNP. Oh. He did play? How does the so called hitter play an entire game (only 3:12 actually) and not register a single hit? The guy is useless and needs to be sent down. I'd rather much keep O'Marra and Omark then see him play one more game. Embarrassing if those two are sent down.

#23 LINUS OMARK - (3) JEERS He was not effective. His assist was a fluke that was a redirect to O'Marra and he took a dumb holding the stick penalty before that. If he wants to be an actual NHL player, I shot that was blocked and 1 blocked shot of his own isn't going to cut it. He had 2:39 in PP time and needs to make use of that. I still think he stunk, but was better than Jacques.

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (5) He was decent. He was +1 and played 15:55. In that time he had 1 shot, 1 hit and 2 blocked shots. He needs to shoot the puck if he wants to be useful. Tonight he was just average and nothing more.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (6) Penner was one of the better Oilers in my opinion. He made some smart plays and started the Whitney goal with a good pass to clear the zone. But only 1 shot, and 1 blocked shot, that hardly constitutes a good game. Meh! *shrugs shoulders*

#28 RYAN JONES - (4) Another average game. 2 shots, 1 hit and 1 blocked shot. If your not going to shoot more, you better be hitting guys.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (7) BEERS Again I get pissy because I'd like to see Dubnyk in more. But again, he proves me wrong. He faced 33 shots but had another 37 go his way. Lucky he didn't have to save all of them. I figured he's earn a star after that performance, but it's clear John Garrett was picking the stars tonight (he really didn't).

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (Backup)

#42 RYAN O'MARRA - (5) Scores his first ever NHL goal tonight with a lucky break where the puck ended up on his stick. He had 1 goal with 1 shot, 2 hits, 1 giveaway and 1 takeaway. The thing I liked from him the most? 3/0 for 100% on faceoffs. Why didn't he take more draws? Was Renney not informed he was sitting at 100%? Makes you wonder.

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (5) Struds was OK. I find he's been better this go around. Since Vandermeer been out, he's been pretty good. He ended up +1 and had 3 blocked shots. He could turn up the hit count as he only had 1. If he could hit more, I'd have no problems keeping him with Whitney.

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (4) He took a high stick to the face and for some reason was sent off too. I don't get it. What did he do ref?  His ass was stapled and only played 3:19. Why have a 4th line if they don't play?

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (4) He took a dumb penalty in the 3rd by knocking Henrik on his ass and was lucky they didn't score. At the time of it happening, it was the Bad Timing Penalty for the Oilers. He just gave up way too much momentum by doing that. While I like to see Hank knocked down, wrong time to do it. He had 2 hits and 1 shot. He needs more solid hits and he needs to make people afraid to go near him. He failed to do that tonight.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (0) DNP (Sick)

#77 TOM GILBERT - (5) He was not really noticeable out there. 2 blocked shots is down from his usual 4 per game and while he did play 20:08, he only fired 2 shots. 1 hit the net, the other missed. If he's not offensive, then what is he? Useless?

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (0) DNP (Injured Groin)

#89 SAM GAGNER - (3) JEERS Oh boy! Here I thought he was going to have a great game. Was I ever wrong. He was -2 by nights end and for the #1 center, 1 shot, 1 takeaway and 1 blocked shot just isn't good enough. Especially when he plays 22:01. He went 7/13 for 35% on faceoffs. He just couldn't win against Malhotra. Boo to you Sammy.... boo to you!

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (4) He had an OK game. If only he could find that 4 point game he had at the start of the year. That MPS was awesome. This one, not so much. While I won't knock him a whole lot, he really needs to find his groove. Maybe ask Stella? He had 2 shots, 1 giveaway and a blocked shot.

---------------------------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY (What is a Bad Timing Penalty?)

Theo Peckham - His 3rd period penalty where he knocks Hank on his ass sent the Canucks on a momentum swing. They didn't score on the PP, but the Oilers were reeling after that for sure.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (7) BEERS He was the best Oiler tonight by a long shot. He took 8 of the 24 shots. Sure he was -1, but who cares when you show the effort like he did? He had a cheap shot to the face from Phaneuf and took a big hit earlier. That didn't slow him down none. I love this kid. He's a winner.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (4) He didn't do a whole lot. He failed to bring his nasty side out. He played 19:12 and only had one hit.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (6) He did what he could. He picked up an assist with a nice play to keep the puck in the zone. He played 26:22 and on;y had a hit and a blocked shot. Oh.. he did have 3 giveaways too.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (0) DNP (Injured)

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (6) I liked his effort and he really tried to make things happen. He played 18:54 and had 2 shots, 3 hits and went 7/8 for 47% on faceoffs.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (6) BEERS He scored the only Oilers goal with a beauty of a shot. Top shelf from right up close. That had me fired up. He took 3 shots and had 1 takeaway.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (3)  JEERS He played limited minutes tonight playing only 8:32. He didn't really contribute much to this game. He went 2/4 for 33% on faceoffs. If he can't do that well, then why is he needed. Play O'Marra in his place.

#22 JF JACQUES - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#23 LINUS OMARK - (4) He was given PP time and couldn't cash in. Renney gave him 16:45 in ice time and only managed 1 shot. He also had 1 giveaway. I'll give him more time, but other than that shootout goal 2 games ago, he's not doing anything to impress me.

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (6) He was decent. No real complaints from me. He played 18:28 and had 2 shots, 1 hit, and 2 blocked shots. He also had a giveaway.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (6) Penner used his big body well tonight. He held off the Leafs a few times including a penalty kill where he kept the puck on his stick while the l\Leafs tried to take it from him. He does need to screen the goalie on the PP though. For some reason I seen him on the half wall a few times. Was that his idea or Renney's? He played 20:34 and had 1 shot, 1 hit, 2 giveaways, 1 takeaway, 2 blocked shots and went 3/3 for 50% on faceoffs.

#28 RYAN JONES - (4) He was pretty average. He had 2 shots, 2 hits, 1 giveaway and 1 blocked shot. I can't really complain about his play tonight. Decent enough.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (4) He was somewhat effective. He didn't make Phaneuf not be a knob and he didn't stop Orr from anything (other than when they were both tossed for pushing each other in the 3rd). I did notice he skates better. He's not so choppy on the ice. Glad to see some improvement. He had 2 hits (on paper) and had 2 giveaways. He had 2 hits (on paper) and had 2 giveaways. He had 2 hits (on paper) and had 2 giveaways. He had 2 hits (on paper) and had 2 giveaways. He had 2 hits (on paper) and had 2 giveaways.

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (5) Not so good. He gave up some weak goals and he made me wish that Dubnyk had another start tonight. Not sure what else to say about him.

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (Backup)

#42 RYAN O'MARRA - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (5) Oy! He unfortunately had one of the goals hit him as it went in. He was OK, but not worth paying for for the whole season. He better be really good in the dressing room because I see no need to keep this guy. He had an own goal, 1 hit, 1 giveaway, 1 takeaway, and 1 blocked shot. Luckily Renney limited his ice time to 13:19.

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (4) He had a scrap with Orr and to my eyes, it was boring as hell. But if you follow any of the Oilers guys, they all said it was a good one. I disagree. He had 2 hits and that's about it. He also went 1/1 for 50% on faceoffs. Glad to see him back in the lineup. If Renney would give him a chance, he's more than a plugger who fights.

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (6) He nailed Phaneuf pretty good and I was hoping he was going to hurt him. He did challenge Dion to a fight, but he pussed out. He had 3 hits, 2 giveaways, 1 takeaway and 2 blocked shots. He could have played a little tougher. Don't ask, just beat the crap out of the guy.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (5) Two games in a row that he tried to be physical.  He had 1 shot, 3 hits and 1 blocked shot. He went 3/5 for 38% on faceoffs. What happened there? He used to be good at faceoffs.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (6) He was good. He played 22:58 and he had 2 shots, 3 giveaways, 2 takeaways and a team high 4 blocked shots. Nobody blocks more shots on the Oilers than Gilbert does. I admire him for that.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (0) DNP (Injured Groin)

#89 SAM GAGNER - (6) He started out the game on fire with the kids but cooled off int he 2nd period. His pass to Eberle was sweet and I figured he was going to have a strong game after that. I was wrong. He had 1 shot, 1 giveaway and 2 blocked shots. Meh! He can be better than what he showed tonight.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (4) He tried. He had 1 shot and a giveaway. Not much to say about MPS. He played 13:32 and took a Bad Timing Penalty that resulted in the Leafs 4th goal.

---------------------------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY (What is a Bad Timing Penalty?)

Too Many Men & The Magnus Paajarvi Penalty - MacIntyre's penalty, to me, was questionable. It was barely a cheap shot on Armstrong. Right after that penalty was killed off, the Oilers took a too many men penalty. Terrible mistake on their part. But the kicker was the Paajarvi penalty. The Leafs scored the 4th goal while he was sitting in the box.

#2 JIM VANDERMEER - (N/A) He was hurt after playing 1:32. They say it is an ankle injury.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (5) He was one of the better Oilers tonight (that's not saying much). He had a team high 3 shots. He hustled out there and didn't get much help from his linemates. He was out chanced 4/7.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (4) He was average at best. He ended the night -1 and really did nothing on the stats sheet even though he played 22:12.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (4) JEERS He was not very good in my eyes, yet managed to be on the plus for chances (6/4). Go figure. Hence the score of 4 and not a 3. He had a team high and a season high 6 giveaways. He had 2 hits and had 3 takeaways.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (0) DNP (Injured)

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (4) JEERS Cogs stunk. Even with Renney changing up the lines, he still stunk. He was -2, had 2 giveaways, had no shots, 1 hit and 1 takeaway. On the plus side, he went 6/6 for 50% on faceoffs (which is good for his standards).

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (5) He was the only Oiler player to score. It came with 4 seconds left in the game and I suppose we should be happy about that. He also contributed 2 of the 22 team giveaways.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (2) JEERS Did he even play? Not noticeable at all. 10:38 of playing time resulted in no shots, 3 hits and 1 blocked shot. I can think of two words when I watch him play... LIAM REDDOX

#22 JF JACQUES - (2) JEERS He was brutal as well. He lines guys up for big hits and misses. He hits the boards more often than players. Someone needs to tell him to slow down and actually hit a guy. Way more effective than missing a check. In 9:49 of ice time, he registered nothing but 3 hits. And Stortini sits for this slug? WTF?

#23 LINUS OMARK - (3) JEERS He was brutal 5 on 5. Zero chances for. He had 1 blocked shot and a giveaway. Not a special night like the last one. Can he improve or is he another Rob Schremp? I'm betting he can improve.

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (3) JEERS He tried to get shots to the net but just couldn't. He had 4 that were blocked before hitting the net. So because of that he had zero chances on paper. He did pick up an assist on the Eberle goal.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (4) Penner was expected to lead this team and failed for the most part. He tried but it wasn't enough. He took 2 shots, 2 giveaways, 1 blocked shot and he was 3/6 for scoring chances. He also picked up an assist on Eberle's goal. He went 5/4 for 56% on faceoffs. A team high. He was also -2 with Cogliano.

#28 RYAN JONES - (4) He was so-so. He tried hard to do something out there and with no avail. I liked his effort, but if all else fails, hammer some players with hits. He didn't do that. He had 1 shot and 2 blocked shots in 14:22 of ice time.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (0) DNP (Backup)

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (7) BEERS He was pretty good. Both goals were hard for him to save so I can't really blame him. He kept this game respectable and did his best to not make this a blowout. WHat more can you ask for? Well... he could have scored I suppose. Kidding!

#42 RYAN O'MARRA - (4) His line sucked like all the Oilers lines did. I liked O'Marra though. I think he's a way better player than Fraser and I would hope that the Oilers see the light as well. He threw 4 hits and had a blocked shot. From my memory, he lost faceoffs because h\the guys he was with failed to win the second battles to gain possession. Hence his 2/5 for 29% faceoff record. Unlike Omark, I can see great potential in O'Marra.

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (4) Not really a standout like games past but I won't complain. However, I don't think Don Cherry would approve of this game. He had 4 hits (good), 1 giveaway and a takeaway. I understand that he's labeled a physical guy, so when the team is sinking like tonight, beat the crap out of someone. Get the team fired up. That's what your here for.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (4) He was better tonight. He laid out a team high 5 hits and had 1 shot on goal. He also contributed to the giveaway cause by coughing up 2 himself. He somehow out chanced the Canucks 3/2 and when Renney changed the lines in the 3rd, he was promoted. Hard work can pay off, even when your not that good. His dumb moment of the game? The boarding call. He deserved that one.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (4) JEERS He was out chanced by a 2/7 margin. Not good enough for one of the "best" Oilers defencemen. "He had 1 shot, 1 hit, 2 giveaways, 2 takeaways and 2 blocked shots. I would expect more from anyone else too if they played 25:57 like Gilbert did.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (0) DNP (Injured Groin)

#89 SAM GAGNER - (3) JEERS He has a chance to be "the guy"and he failed to do so tonight. I expect a ton out of this kid and maybe that's my problem. He's still just a kid. He's not meshing with Hall and Eberle and I don't expect him to be on that line next game. He took two penalties and tried to take 5 shots in the game, but only 1 manged to hit the net. He went 6/9 for 40% on faceoffs.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (3) JEERS He tried out there. He even had a penalty shot that looked slow motion and predictable. No way he was fooling Luongo with that move. He only registered 2 shots. 1 was on net and the other was a miss. No hits, no nothing. A tad disappointed with MPS.

---------------------------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY (What is a Bad Timing Penalty?)

Theo Peckham - Gilbert Brule just took a stupid boarding penalty and with only a few seconds burned off on that penalty, Peckham (I'm sure not on purpose) high sticked a Canucks player. That gave the Canucks a 5 on 3 for a minute forty something. Lucky for those two, the Canucks failed to score.

#2 JIM VANDERMEER - (5) He was not so good. He had a team high 4 giveaways and only one hit. He played 21:06 and did block 3 shots, but I just thought he looked a step behind.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (7) BEERS The kid can play. And score. His skating speed is very hard to stop and he seemed to have the jets burning all game long. He took 10 shots tonight including his wrap around goal, with 4 of those 10 shots hitting the net. Every 4th shot was from Hall. The team took 42 in all and 10 were Taylor's. He had 2 takeaways and even blocked a shot. He couldn't have played much better.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (6) He was OK. He finished the night -1 but he played tough there for a while. He was trying to be physical and he did make a nice play in the 3rd to break up a scoring chance but he needs to find away to do that all the time. He made 3 hits and had 3 blocked shots, but also had 2 giveaways.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (6) He was pretty decent. I didn't notice any real bad giveaways from him (credited with 2 tonight). I do remember seeing him get caught out of position in the 2nd, but for the most part pretty safe plays. He took 1 shot and also had 3 blocked shots. He played 24:41.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (0) DNP (Injured)

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (6) Cogs was OK. He played pretty hard and good things happened for him. He played just over 20 minutes and played well on the PK. Looking at the event summary, Cogliano has 1's all across the board. He went 8/11 for 42% on faceoffs. Good effort tonight.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (6) BEERS He plays smart. He does need to be more aggressive with shooting and going hard to the net. He needs no work on his play making skills, he has that down to a science. He had 1 shot and 2 takeaways. His shootout move was so slick. A little foot kick and a quick deke and it's in. He's credited with the shootout winner even though Omark stole the show.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (4) JEERS I'll be honest. I never really noticed him all that much. I'm not -- and I know I have tried -- a Fraser fan. I seen no point in keeping him around. O'Marra can do what he does, but better. Fraser had 1 shot, 1 hit and 2 giveaways in 9:49 of ice time.

#22 JF JACQUES - (4) He was OK. He tried to hit guys and he registered 3 on paper. He needs to rack up 6 or more hits a game like he used to.

#23 LINUS OMARK - (7) BEERS The kid earns an assist (his first ever NHL point) from a pretty sweet play to set up Gilbert and scores in the shootout with a spin-o-rama fake shot through the 5 hole to steal the show. WOW! What a show it was. He played 11:49 and had 1 shot, 2 takeaways and 2 blocked shots. While his defensive game needs work, he sure can move that puck. If he can play well again on Sunday, he may start to earn a permanent spot here

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (7) BEERS I liked Foster. When he's doing something and he's productive, that's when he's on his game. Tonight he did a lot. He had 3 shots on goal (6 in total), 3 blocked shots, a hit and a takeaway.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (8) BEERS Penner had an edge to his game tonight and he really stood out as dominant. Omark was nailed hard and Penner stuck up for him and tussled with Kubina. That seemed to piss Penner off and after that he just bounced guys off of him. He assisted on Paajarvi's goal and created a ton of chances. Oh so close to the Gordie Howe hat trick. He had a fight, took 4 shots, had 4 hits and 2 blocked shots. I'd say a good night.

#28 RYAN JONES - (6) He was decent. From sheer hard work alone he made himself an opportunity shorthanded. He's playing the best we have seen him since he's been with the team. He had 4 hits.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (8) BEERS He kept the team in this game long enough to win it in the shootout. He made some great saves and for the most part, kept the rebounds away from the front of the net. His focus seemed honed in as he made some saves, I had no idea how he seen them.

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (Backup)

#42 RYAN O'MARRA - (6) His season debut and he picks up an assist. I thought he was way more effective than Fraser was and if that keeps on going, I can see him replace Fraser when cuts need to be made. I liked his game tonight. His line was burned early on a goal, but most of that was nerves I'm sure. I doubt that line before the game started and while it wasn't a great line, it was OK. In 11:30 of ice time, he had 3 hits and 1 blocked shot. He went 4/8 for 33% on the faceoff dot.

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (6) BEERS He plays such a hard hitting game. He had 5 hits tonight and was a wrecker. He also blocked 4 shots and played pretty good on the PK. He's really adapting well to the NHL. He keeps growing on me.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (5) He was average. He took 1 shot, pounded 2 hits and had a giveaway. He's deserving his time on the 4th line.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (7) BEERS Is it me or is he playing like he's tough? He seems to be more physical and more in your face. Only in the game though, he still doesn't mix it up after a whistle. He scores a goal and plays a team high 26:02. He took one shot, had 1 hit, 3 takeaways and 1 blocked shot.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (0) DNP (Injured Groin)

#89 SAM GAGNER - (6) His new line wasn't great. They didn't flat out suck either. Sam had a rough go with 3 giveaways and only had 1 shot, but he did go 10/10 for 50% on faceoffs. That's damn good, for Gagner. He had PP and PK time tonight.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (7) BEERS Another good game. He scores a goal and has an assist for the 2nd star of the game. While he wasn't blowing minds with you tube antics, he played a good solid game. He had 2 shots and a giveaway. Nice to see all the kids taking a turn becoming a hero.

BAD TIMING PENALTY (What is a Bad Timing Penalty?)

The Oilers Bench - Imagine this. Overtime. The Oilers are tied and what happens? The puck goes to the guy that's coming on and the guy going off is lolly gagging to the bench. Tweet! Too Many Men. In Overtime! Lucky the Bolts didn't score and the Oilers went on to win in the shootout.

#2 JIM VANDERMEER - (6) He was OK. He played 21:05 and had a team high 5 hits. Not his best game lately (3 giveaways), but still worthy enough that I wasn't screaming for a call up.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (8) BEERS He was awesome again! He scored the OT winner and really busted his hump all over the ice all game long. It took 20 games, but the real Taylor Hall is starting to show. He took 4 shots on goal and had a team high 3 takeaways.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (6) He was pretty solid. I'm still missing his nasty side, but he's progressing. Maybe the switch to the 3rd pairing was a good idea for him and Foster? He had 2 blocked shots and a hit.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (6) He logged a lot of time again and made the nice pass to Hall for the game winner. He had a team high 4 blocked shots and that's rare. He can play in any situation and for the most part, handles it all pretty well.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (7) BEERS He is the luckiest out of all the Oilers. He plays with Hall and Eberle and as far as I can hear, not one complaint about his big dollar contact. Is he earning it or is he just riding the rookie wave to greatness? He went 9/5 for 64% on the faceoff circle. That's pretty good. If he would have earned an assist or a goal, he would have been bumped up to an 8.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (5) Decent game tonight from my eyes, but a little stinky when looking at the number totals. Only 1 shot, 1 hit, 1 takeaway 1 blocked shot and 2 giveaways. He's been better.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (6) He was OK. He should have been a 7, but his 3 giveaways is glaring at me. He took 5 shots in total with 3 hitting the net. It's strange to see how mature he is on the ice and I would assume that playing with Horcoff is going to age him a little. Meaning he's going to be a vet presence sooner than the other rookies. He's slick.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (6) On the 4th line with Storts and Jacques. He did find himself with 1:07 of PK time. Best of all forwards. He dropped the gloves with Della Rovere and did pretty good. Nice to see some emotion form Fraser even if he only plays 6:14 a night.

#22 JF JACQUES - (4) He was average at best. The supposed BIG HITTER doesn't hit very often. His physical presence is lacking the physical. Or the presence. He did lay out 2 hits and 2 blocked shots, but I always expect more from the tough guys.

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (5) I didn't mind Foster. He sure isn't what the media hyped him to be. I have been expecting that Souray bomb shot from him and so far, I have only seen it once (not tonight). He had 1 shot, 1 hit and 1 giveaway.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (6) Renney said after the game that Penner was not feeling well. I suppose looking back you could tell, but I still liked how he played. He had 2 good shots on goal and when he drives to the net, good things happen.

#28 RYAN JONES - (7) BEERS He's another guy that I have been flogging lately. Tonight he was great. I liked him. Really. He scores the games opening goal in the 3rd period and played well all night despite looking like the 3rd wheel with Gagner and Paajarvi. Jones had a team high (with Vandermeer) 5 hits. If he keeps playing like this, a call up might never be made.

#29 MARTIN GERBER - (0) DNP (With OKC Barons)

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (8) BEERS He was on his way to another shutout when, you guessed it, another former Oiler Eric Brewer scores to tie the game. He played well all night and did come up with some key saves. I was worried that he's going to get overplayed again, but he seems ready to come back not like Hemsky.

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (Backup)

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#45 SHAWN BELLE - (0) DNP (With OKC Barons)

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (4) He was OK. He crashed and banged but still needs to do more I think.  He only had 1 hit to his name. He played 6:24.

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (6) He took a puck in the mouth in the first, was stitched up, and then came back and finished the game. Character that guy has. While he didn't register a lot of stats on paper, he is a welcomed participant. He can play tough. He out chanced the opposition 8/5.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (6) He was decent. Not much to complain about. He took 4 shots and was 3/3 for 50% on faceoffs. He filled in for Horcoff when Horcs had skate issues and seemed like a fit with the rookies.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (6) He led the team in ice time with 24:48. All that ice time is sure to hurt him somehow. Oh yes... 3 giveaways. He didn't lead the team in blocked shots tonight and that to me, is strange. I have seen him play better even though he out chanced the Blues.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (0) DNP (Injured Groin)

#89 SAM GAGNER - (7) BEERS His chemistry with Paajarvi is growing. Gagner led that line all game long and with the Jones goal, marked another point for Gagner. It is weird that he didn't take a single shot. If you are wondering, I gave him a 7 for his willingness to compete. Replace Hemsky with Jones and this line will rock.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (7) BEERS Another good game. He also picked up an assist on the Jones goal. He had 3 quality shots and a takeaway. He's really been improving these last few games. I like that he's gelling with Gagner.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (7) BEERS He was dynamite tonight. He had an assist on the Jones goal and was +4. He played 20:57 and was on top of his game. He also had 5 hits to his credit. This is back to back games where he was given a 7 by me. Vandy is the first of many Oilers players to prove me wrong tonight.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (8) BEERS His mastery of the game keeps getting better. He pulls out a 1st star performance with a 2 goal night. Both goals were spectacular. Hall is the real deal and with the 2 goals tonight he ties Gagner with the team lead at 8 a piece. He was part of 8 scoring chances tonight and took a team high, 4 shots. 30 friends and family were at the ACC to see Taylor light it up.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (6) Again not a real solid effort but was good enough not to be bad. He had 2 hits and 2 blocked shots. He was +1 at games end. I can honestly say that he didn't stand out to me.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (7) BEERS Whitney had 2 assists tonight and that moves him to the top spot for defenceman in the league. He finished +3 but was roasted on scoring chances for and against (6/11). He blocked a team high 5 shots and laid out 2 hits. He's a rock back there.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (7) BEERS He was +3 and had an assist on the 2nd Hall goal. He did a lot of good out there and really helped make space for the kids. He had 2 shots, 3 blocked shots and was 8/11 for 42% on faceoffs. He out chanced the opposition 7/4. I'm thinking he's liking the mentor thing?

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (6) He was not bad. He took 2 shots, 2 hits and 2 blocked shots. I liked his hustle and he did play a lot of PK time. Other than going 1/7 for a terrible 13% on faceoffs, he was OK.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (8) BEERS Wowzers! The kid can play. He scored a goal and had 2 assists and that was good enough to move him very close to the rookie scoring lead. Eberle may be a kid, but he's playing a like a man. He's not on the PK anymore, so all his productivity came on even strength play. Buy an Eberle jersey. You just can't go wrong.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (5) I'm not going to complain. He was OK. He did nothing to make anyone take notice, but was also with Big Mac and Storts. He had 3 hits and 1 takeaway in 7:28 of playing time. 3:07 of that time was on the PK.

#22 JF JACQUES - (0) DNP (Healthy Scratch)

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (6) He was OK. He took a lot of shots with only 2 hitting the net. Not much else to say about Foster.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (6) He had a quiet game stats wise. He played good enough but he didn't take the game by the balls. He took no shots, had no hits and only registered a blocked shot. Not a spectacular night when the rookies are tearing it up.

#28 RYAN JONES - (6) He has been bad as of late. I said to hell with him, send him down and call up Reddox. Well... tonight he scores and snags an assist. I'll give him credit. He showed me he can be useful. He only played 14:23 but finished +2, 1 shot, 1 hit and 2 takeaways. I wasn't fond of his 3rd period penalty, but he did manage to score the 5th goal.

#29 MARTIN GERBER - (0) DNP (Minors)

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (4) Did fight Colton Orr and beat him up (which was great), but that's all. Hmmm... hard to grade. He should earn a 7 strictly for his fight and the fact the Leafs didn't try to mess with the kids after that. He did his job even if he only played 3:20.

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (8) BEERS His first game back off the injury and he blasts out a shutout. Holy hell! 33 saves for the win and he looked great doing it. I was wrong about him. I figured him playing tonight was a huge mistake. I was wrong. *gasp*

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (Backup)

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (0) DNP (Scratch)

#45 SHAWN BELLE - (0) DNP (Minors)

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (5) Same boat as MacIntyre, but he didn't put any fear into anyone. He also played just over 3 minutes so how do you judge him on that effort? Not his fault Renney doesn't play him more. I say give him a 5 for moral support.

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (7) BEERS He hit (3 hits) guys like he does every other game. He's damn good at it too. He plays a solid defensive game and can read plays well. Sometimes he goes to far out of his way to hit a guy, but tonight he recovered fine every time. He did well in scoring chances for and against. He was +1

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (5) Brule was somewhat quiet again. 2 shots and 1 hit is his claim to fame. He was even on scoring chances and really had no impact on this game once again.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (6) He was OK. He wasn't on for any of the goals which is strange considering he played 16:57 of E/S ice time. He blocked 3 shots and took one of his own. At least that's something.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (0) DNP (Injury) He came and played for one game yesterday and was really sore after it. He sat out this game but I'd expect him for Saturday's game.

#89 SAM GAGNER - (7) BEERS He was good again. He scored a nice goal tonight and it was all on effort. Following the puck will help you get those once in a while. He misses Hemsky and Jones just isn't a good enough replacement. I liked how Paajarvi and Gags worked together. They seem to be clicking. Now to have Hemsky back permanently. He took 2 shots and had a takeaway.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (6) He played hard and earned another assist tonight. His pointless streak really is over. I bet he's happy about that. Like Gagner, he was +2 and had a shot, a takeaway and a blocked shot. He's been improving a lot of the last couple games.
