It's the most wonderful time of the year!

With the kids jingle belling...

Nah, screw that! It's hockey season once again folks! Not just the beginning of the 2011-12 NHL season (which was a few days ago now), but more importantly, Oilers hockey season!

So... What's changed in the world since 2010-11?

Firstly, a new look: As soon as I saw Ryan Nugent-Hopkins pull on a vintage Oilers road jersey (albeit with the Reebok EDGE style collar), I knew one thing was certain: we'd OFFICIALLY dumped the Midnight Blue & Copper colours. Thank God we have, I hated them! The Oilers website looks fresh, it looks good, and it's got all the Blue & Orange touches I could ever dream of! The wallpapers there are also excellent. If you've not seen it, I recommend you go to the Oilers website (no link provision necessary) and download Marcel Schoenhardt's Taylor Hall wallpaper - it's bitchin'!

Secondly, a re-hashed line-up. I think the Oilers franchise made some very good off-season acquisitions, headlined by the "Return of #94", the one and only, Ryan Smyth! (acquired from LA for Colin "Crap" Fraser) Smytty's EXACTLY what this franchise needs right now - a leader (and I don't mean Horcoff) who can show these blossoming kids (Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi, Omark, Nugent-Hopkins etc...) exactly what it means to be an Oiler and play in front of these Diehard* fans.

*Pay close attention to that word, "Diehard", I'll be using it again towards the end of the blog...

We also made a excellent move by acquiring Éric Bélanger (accentuated name and all) from free agency; because, let's face it, the Oilers have stunk at winning draws in the faceoff circle for the last 5 years or so... There's also Ben "Hothead" Eager flanking our 4th line LW and new D's "BIG... Did I say BIGGGGGG?" Andy Sutton (acquired from ANA for Kurtis Foster) and Cam "trying to get my career back on track" Barker shoring up the Oilers blueline. I still think we're missing a top-end D-Man to pair with Ryan Whitney (when he returns from injury), but maybe he's there just waiting to be discovered in Oklahoma City, or Prince George, perhaps?

Whilst keeping within the same point, we're going the other way now with new additions that have come in the form of people like Anton Lander (very excited to see what he's going to do for us), who solidly edged out Gilbert "Bye, have fun in OKC!" Brulé from the Oilers roster, Lennart Petrell (excellent PK guy - he's a bit of a bitch for having a clause in his contract which states "If I don't play NHL, I'm going home to Finland..." My retort: "Grow up, you fucking child!"), Jeff Petry, I had said around various other websites he'd get an NHL job this season and Corey Potter, who's a bit of a dark horse, but had an excellent showing throughout camp, Potter's a necessity for us right now, because of our defensive injury crisis (Already!? Yes, already!) and finally... Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who'll get his 9 games this season for sure, will he get anymore? You're damn right he will! Not only can he find the back of the net, but he's an unselfish playmaker too, who'll have no problem finding a Hall or an Eberle in the right spot waiting to slot it home.

Although it's exciting to see how RNH handles his 1st NHL season, what REALLY excites me is Taylor Hall, he's the true Oilers franchise player. In 10 years time, if you're asked to name an Edmonton Oilers player straight off the top of your head, the first name you think of should be Taylor Hall, because he's this generation's Mark Messier; the embodiment of hard-work, leadership and having the ability to take charge and change a whole game at the snap of his fingers. (Remember Hall's first NHL hat trick when we played Atlanta? That's exactly what I'm talking about!)

Thirdly, not really Oilers-related, but kind of is; my wife is pregnant again with her 3rd (my 2nd) child - a girl, who we're going to name "Jasmine Leah Jericho". She's due in early February 2012, but she'll likely arrive sooner like her older sister (Alexa) did. Another Oilers fan in the world is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing!

Right... It's now time for some plugs:

I haven't designed any artwork for a while, but I'm waiting on some decent media to come my way, before I get started. I have, however, changed my Twitter handle. I can now be found HERE.

Remember the word Diehard? Good! You were paying attention. If you're on the ol' Facebook, be sure to check out the "Edmonton Oilers Diehards" group. It's a "closed" group, we don't let anyone just walk in - but if you're here to spread Oilers love without trolling other members, then it's all good. We don't allow Flames fans, or Canucks fans etc in; they'd make the group look bad (á la the Oilers Official Facebook page) when spreading their hate.

Erm... I think that's all I got for now. If there's anything you guys think I've missed, do drop me a comment and I'll post something up.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Is On Twitter!!!

While I know that this isn't big news, but if you haven't checked out twitter yet, you should.

Tyler Pitlick and Tyler Bunz have convinced RNH to join the twitter group.  I love the fact that twitter puts us so close to all these young stars of the Edmonton Oilers.  It feels like you really get to know who these kids are.  For the most part they are guarded about what they say, but it does shed some light on how and what they think.  Guess what? They're normal just like you and me.

So go ahead and sign up for twitter. Find out what RNH has to say. www.twitter.com/RNH_93

While your there, follow us too! www.twitter.com/OilersJambalaya

Introducing Russ Jericho

Fellow Oilers/Barons/Thunder fans,

My name is Russ Jericho. If my name seems familiar as of recently, that might be because I've been mentioned a few times here already, via Twitter and my graphic contributions here thus far (September & October schedule wallpapers).

Let me tell you a little bit about me, I'm one of the more "unusual" fans, so to speak... I'm a hockey fan, yes, but I'm born and raised in the United Kingdom. I'd go so far as to say I'm the biggest Oilers fan and probably the only Barons fan in the UK. Hockey's not the most talked about sport over here, as the UK is dominated by football, the sport most of you know as "soccer". I can't stand the sport, I can't stand this country much either, and if I had the money I'd get a one-way ticket out of this dump!

I've a bit of an outspoken nature... Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes it's bad... But if you want a straight answer, I'm the sort of person that gives it to you straight, no BS.

I'm also a married man with two wonderful children, my step-son, Kai (5 years) and my daughter, Alexa (7 1/2 months). They're my world, and if you don't hear from me for a while, it's because my job as a Dad is more important than anything else.

What my blogs will consist of are my general thoughts and feelings on the Oilers and the Barons organisations and the plugging of my artwork, all of which will be Oilers and Barons related media.

I'll also be the first person to jump to the defence of my hockey teams too, I'm allowed to criticise my team, but if some non-fan does, they better be prepared for war!

What I'm doing at this minute is complaining my ass off to EA Sports because they've totally F'ed up the Barons Home and Away jerseys in NHL 11. If you're a fan, and you have this game, you already know what I'm talking about! I also try to correct player equipment settings and have realistic audio in-game too. There's nothing worse than scoring an awesome goal with Ales Hemsky to hear "¡Olé!" by the Bouncing Souls!

Expect to see some tidbits from me on Twitter and Oilers/Barons NHL 11 edits on http://petrpuck.blogspot.com/.

Well, that's me.

GO OILERS GO!
GO BARONS GO!

Taylor Hall Twitter Account / Now You See It, Now You Don't

Late last night Dan Tencer tweeted that Taylor Hall had a twitter account. WOOT!

He said that Taylor's account was @TaylorHall_91.

However, by this morning, it was deleted. BOOOO!

Dan did say he was told by a reputable source that that was indeed Taylor's account and I believe him. I had followed and retweeted his tweet and was really excited to be able to see more from Taylor.

Twas not to be...

So did he get tired of his phone beeping last night from added followers and shut it down? Doubt it.

Did the Oilers shut him down? We all know how the Oilers feel about Twitter and the Bloggers. Hall with a twitter account would have given us too much access to the golden kid. So this seems likely to me.

So many questions and so little answers (yet). But as you know, OilersJambalaya.com won't rest till we find out. Or until tomorrow's game and we forget about this all together.

It's too bad. Here I thought the Oilers were turning a page and were finally going to embrace the fans by allowing a player to have a Twitter account. Wouldn't that be refreshing?

Bad Timing Penalty™

None

Ethan Moreau - Baaad!  He gets another Jeer tonight.

----------------

BEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - The comes in for his 1st start off the year and not only has a 40 save night, but looks good doing it.  I sure hope this preformance puts some ease into the fans of this franchise.  He did well just like he did last year and I'm sure he's going to do the same this year.  Excellent game JDD.  1st game... 1st beer.  Cheers!

Zack Stortini - Mr. Zorg had one heck of a game.  Quite possibly deserved the 1st star.  Two goals on two shots and a fight that lasted an eternity.  The big guy deserves some more PP time.  Quinn rewards those who bust their asses, and Storts did tonight.  He earned the coldest beer I have. Cheers!

Denis Grebeshkov - I haven't been a huge fan of his so far in this season, but he did very good tonight.  he really steped up and ran with the ball.  He still has his moments where you want to puke, not sure if those will ever go away.  I hope so.  The goal he scored was very slick.  Top Cheese as Paq Twinn likes to say.  :) Great game Grebs... How about an imported Temne beer from Russia? Cheers!

Andrew Cogliano - What is it with getting placed on the 4th line and then finding your skills again?  Is it Stortini?  Cause it can't be Moreau.  At any rate, I like Cogliano tonight.  Let's see what Quinn does with him next.  Good job speedy.  Frosty?  Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - This guy seems like he's for real this year.  He's playing at that level where he can make a contribution to the team.  Thank god because I was hoping that he wasn't going to be a bust.  He's trying to play with a nasty edge and it seems to help him compete.  For playing a standup game... How about a Bud?  Cheers!

Honorable Mentions: Shawn Horcoff (He scored his 1st of the year and played a good game), Taylor Chorney (He was called up and was put in right away.  It looked like he never left after training camp.  Good game tonight.), Ales Hemsky (He wasn't overly good, he just wasn't that bad either.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He seems to get a little better every game and he is dynamite 5 on 5.), Tom Gilbert (When he's not noticable, he's playing pretty sound hockey.  He did that tonight.), Jason Strudwick (Normal solid game from Struds.)

---------------------

JEERS

Sam Gagner - Other than ending the night even at 50% on the faceoff dot, he really did nothing.  You noticed him, but no shots or hits?  That's not how he has been succesful.  A little 4th line duty once again for Sam? Booooooo!

Ryan Stone - He's supposed to be the hitter of this team.  That's his niche and he strayed away from that.  Two more games of that and Big Mac may get a chance.  I can expect a better game from him next time. Boooooooo!

Ethan Moreau - He did nothing.  Once again the people around you are lighting it up.  He did manage to be +2 at the end of the night, but when a guy like him has no hits or blocked shots, then he didn't play well.  That's his type of game, and he was invisable.  I may just have to rekindle the old campaign from last year.  NEED NEW CAPTAIN (NNC).  Boooooooo!

----------------------

That was a great game to watch.  It was nice to be on this side of the ass whooping.  See you guys all next time...  GOILERS!!!
