VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

Game Notes:

- The Oilers started the game on fire. Then by the halfway through the first it was all Kings. The Kings really applied the pressure on the Oilers. But, the 1st ended 1-0 for the Oilers despite being out-shot by the Kings.

- The 2nd period still wasn't good for the Oilers. The Kings again came out ready to beat the Oilers. Despite taking a ton of shots at Dubnyk, they couldn't score. The Oilers did however. It was 2-0 after the 2nd period was over.

- Even though the Oilers again scored early in the 3rd, the Kings were still taking it to them. Bam! Bam! It`s a 3-2 game. Bam! Now it's a 3-3 tie game. Holy crap! It was looking like the Oilers were going to implode once again, but the game went to overtime.

- Overtime settled nothing and the shootout was next. Potulny and Horcoff score to win it for the Oilers.

The Good:

- Devan Dubnyk was really good tonight. He faced 55 shots and had a shutout going into the 3rd period. I decided just for fun to see who people would choose. So I asked the people that were around for the TweetCast who they would keep if they had to pick, Dubnyk or Deslauriers. 10 people chose Dubnyk and 1 chose Deslauriers. I was one of the 10 that picked DD.

- Mike Comrie was the man tonight. Partly because Hillary Duff was at the game. He ALWAYS plays well when she is there. With 2 goals on 3 shots, I'd say Mike was on fire, or just a show off. I wonder if the Oilers are going to bring him back for another year? I don't think I'd be opposed to it. For a guy who I hated so much, I no longer have that hate for Mike.

- Tom Gilbert is easily the most improved player in the last half of the season. Ever since Ryan Whitney came into his life, he's be terrific. He scores a goal and has 2 assists tonight and led the team with 4 blocked shots. That's a great effort on his part.

- Ryan Whitney is slowing becoming one of my Jib cutters. He's a real key cog in helping Gilbert turn the page. He had 2 assists and was +2 tonight.

- Marc Pouliot was the best at faceoffs tonight at 50%. Other than that, he did squat.

- The "New Bash Brothers" Arsene and Johnson were pretty dominant in the hitting department. Johnson had 5 hits and Arsene had 4 hits.

The Not So Good:

- The Oilers were out-shot 55-16. I can not believe they won a game while getting destroyed in shots.

- The Chorney/Strudwick train wreck was in full force tonight. Chorney made a weak pass on his first shift and never looked back. Both guys ended up -2 each. I don't want either one of these guys back.

- The play that caused the penalty shot that Whitney took was bad. He gave the puck away at the Kings bklueline and then rushed back and grabbed Modin and hauled him down in front of DD. Good thing Dubnyk saved that penalty shot.

The Side Dish:

- The Edmonton Oilers website has a draft simulator. Try it here. It's kind of fun.

- The Springfield Falcons lost in a 7-5 game to the Wolf Pack. Click here for the recap.

Most. Boring. Game. Ever. / An Oilers Game Recap

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

--------------------

THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- Jeff Deslauries was really, really good. He kept this team in this game. Jeff has been better than I had expected this season.

- Pouliot was a work horse. He played pretty good. He was one guy who I seen all game and not for bad stuff either.

- Ryan Whitney is making me a believer. He's been great. Tonight he was pushy, angry and very aware. He was making some real great passes and was on the ice for both Oiler goals.

- Tom Gilbert also played pretty good. He picked up two assists on the Oilers only two goals. I even seen him push a guy down. I know. Shocking.

- I thought that Aaron Johnson was also pretty solid. He laid out some hard and heavy hits and he's looking like he fits in on this squad.

- Dustin Penner didn't really play well all game, but he did score his 29th goal of the season and that makes me happy. One more for 30.

- With only 7:36 of ice time, Ryan Jones didn't accomplish much. He did score the tying goal though. So that's something right?

- Andrew Cogliano played with Penner again this game and he picked up an assist on Penner's goal.

- Dean Arsene had 5 hits and played pretty good.

The Not So Good:

- This was a boring game. Even the overtime and shootout had no drama. UGH! Glad this train wreck is almost over.

- The Oilers take this game to a shootout. Tom Gilbert is the best choice? 8 rounds of shootout and no Cogliano? Strange.

- Mike Comrie is the natural center on his line yet, Zack Stortini was playing center. With Comrie not wanting to make concessions to improve the team, that is reason enough for me to not want him back next season.

- Strudwick and Chorney were their usual terrible selves. Both were burned by being on the ice for both Coyote goals.

- Shawn Horcoff made some bad plays and wasn't really that good. Maybe he's just tired of the crap like the rest of us?

The Side Dish:

- The Falcons only had one goal in a 6-1 loss. Eberle was the guy to score. Recap here.

- The Thunder were losing 4-1 at the time of this recap. Recap to follow.

- Hall vs Seguin recap is here.

SHOOTOUT DETAILS

------------------

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Theo Peckham - Right after the Habs score their 3rd goal to make it 3-2, Peckham takes a very silly holding penalty and gave the Habs even more momentum than they already had from the go ahead goal. And besides that, he was just in the box a few minutes before that which caused the Habs momentum swing in the first place. Bad game for Peckham.
------------------

BEERS

Penner/Cogliano/Brule - Cogliano gets the fortune of acquiring a dynamic duo in Penner and Brule to play on his wings for this game. Penner and Brule have an uncanny chemistry and adding Cogliano's speed and aggressive puck play just made that line fantastic. Split a mini keg boys. Cheers!

Tom Gilbert - He finished the game a +1 and he had two assists and he blocked 4 shots. Not bad for a 5-4 hockey game.  He's done nothing but impress me since his new top pairing role has started. I can see why he wears the "A" once in a while now. He's one of the leaders for this Oilers team now and down the road. He played 27:49 and was good right down to the wire. One frosty cold one, coming up. Cheers!

Chris Minard - The $275,000 AHL hotshot finally makes his Oilers debut. At the start of the game, I had doubts. But within the first three minutes of the game he has a nice give and go with Gagner and he picks up an assist on the goal. He seemed to play well with Gagner and Pouliot. He sure didn't look out of place. He played 10:54. Have a cold frosty mug of Oilers Jambalaya Budweiser. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Aaron Johnson (He played 26:31. Holy crap. He must be dead after a game like that. And he played really good. He ended the night +1.), Shawn Horcoff (He played well with Comrie. Horcoff even scored tonight. Really, he did.), Robert Nilsson (3 shots and a goal for Bobby. I know, it's strange. He was good.), Devan Dubnyk (He played OK. He let in some weak goals and he wasn't spectacular. But that's OK, he made it to the shootout and even did pretty good in that. He still hasn't won his first NHL game yet.)

------------------

JEERS

Taylor Chorney - I didn't like his game tonight and ending up -3 sucks. Sloppy plays and bad passes makes me want to boo him. So I'm going to. BOOOOOOO!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Jason Strudwick (He was looking like he was drowning out there. I'd say I hope he gets better, but who am I kidding.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - The first period was very exciting. Very. Four goals in the first ten minutes was an intense way to start a game. The whole game was good, but that start was great. I knew it was a good game when my pregnant and due wife was even enjoying the game. Not much impresses her lately. lol. So if you missed the game, oh well, you missed the game. That's why we have a recap. ; )

Oh yeah... Ryan Whitney suffered and injury and did not play in the 3rd. The injury bug strikes again.

Paq Twinn - He's M.I.A.

THINGS I NOTICED

- Ruutu and Peckham hate each other.
- Aaron Johnson plays a simple, yet effective game.
- I didn't even notice that O'Sullivan was not playing (he was hurt during the game). How sad is that?
- I also barely noticed Mike Comrie. I wonder for a bit if he was injured too. He wasn't. He was just bad.
- The first two periods JDD was an old school goalie. Then he reverted back to the 2010 Oilers crap goalie.
- Penner has been crappy since the Olympic team roster was announced in December. Coincidence?
- Jason Strudwick is NOT a top 4 guy.
- I like the Whitney/Gilbert pairing. They are a smooth skating duo.
- Pisani's goal... was his 3rd of the year. Ouch!
- No team in the league can win a game if you only take 14 shots. The Oilers sucked in that area tonight.
- Comrie's only shining moment came on his penalty shot. Sadly, he blew it and failed to score.
- Stortini picking a fight with Carkner was a bad idea. If anything, it woke up the Sens and not the Oilers.

------------------

BEERS

Aaron Johnson - He might become a favorite around here. It's been 3 games and the guy has impressed me from day one. I do want to see his rough and tough side. But with 4 hits and an assist, he played pretty darn good. I like this Johnson kid. I hope he continues his good play. How about your first ever ice cold Oilers Jambalaya Budweiser? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Fernando Pisani (He scores the Oilers only goal and had 3 shots, 3 hits and 4 blocked shots. Pretty solid effort for Pisani), Ryan Whitney (The man can skate. He's good at that. He's also kind of mean. He had some mean battles with Mike Fisher and showed me he's not just a cream puff.) Jeff Deslauriers (He played a heck of a game, very old school Bill Ranford type, but blew it when it counted.)

------------------

JEERS

Everyone Else NOT Mentioned Above - Boooooooo! But thanks for not winning. We appreciate it. DFF!

B&J #116 - Edmonton Oilers Recap vs Chicago Blackhawks (3/3/10)

There was a game on tonight. The Oilers lost to the Hawks 5-2. The Oilers did a good job for the first half, but the sleeping Hawks woke up and laid a beating on the AHL Oilers. Dubynk was hammered for 47 shots, while the Oilers fired off a paltry 14. I'm sure that just summed up the game for you. Sorry, it's hard to care.

But all this trade shenanigans that went down today (and yesterday) really disappointed me.

I don't know about you guys, but I was stunned when Grebeshkov was traded, but I kept telling myself it's for something bigger. Fair enough right? A 2nd round pick is pretty good. You can hopefully pick a solid kid that will be a good NHL'er someday. But the Grebeshkov deal did release some much needed cap relief. Again, cool with that.

Then we traded Cody Wild to the Boston Bruins for Matt Marquardt. I guess that was a farm team addition for down the road. Whatever. I don't care about this deal.

Once the action started to heat up this morning, I was fired up. What will Tambo do today? Who's the "big fish" the Oilers are going to snag this year? So every 15 minutes I would sneak away and check my Twitter on my phone.

Let me just say that I was quite entertained today. Everyone and their dog was trying to be first in announcing the trades. Nobody really did "break" anything other than Darren Dreger and Bob MacKenzie. Everyone else were chasers. Quick fingers will get you second, but not first. That takes connections.

Back to the trades. Once I heard that the Oilers snagged Ryan Jones from the Nashville Predators off of waivers, I was even more intrigued by Tambellini's master plan. THANK GOD HE HAS A PLAN!

I like Ryan Jones. He's going to fit in good and I'm sure the Oilers plan to keep him long term or at least the rest of the year. He has one more year left on his contract and it's a $0.975 million cap hit. Not expensive. He's 25 years old and has the same size as Ryan Stone. I'm sure Jonsey will be a fan favorite.

In between the Souray to the Devils and the Moreau to the Leafs "deals" that were floating around, I started to mind wander. Who's the new Oiler going to be? What's he going to be like? *rubs hands and laughs*

For awhile there, I thought the Oilers were going to get Peter Mueller or Wojtek Wolski. I even heard that the Oilers were in on Horton and Dubinsky. Then I heard Tom Gilbert was on his way to any team that needed a defenseman. The Twitter World was a crazy messed up place for a two hour span.

Then, as the deadline passes, my excitement turns to anger. Tambo did nothing?!? What the hell? Just as I was giving up hope, I see this: Oilers trade Visnovsky to the Ducks.

What? For who? I'm freaking out. The next tweet rolls by and I see the name Ryan. My heart started racing. WE GOT BOBBY RYAN!

Oh... *sigh* Ryan Whitney.

The trade was Lubomir Visnovsky for Ryan Whitney and the Ducks 6th round pick in 2010. The Oilers save $1.6 million on the cap hit and gain a low draft pick, but lose another puck moving defenseman. This to me, was the confusing part. Grebs and now Lubo? Who's going to get the puck out of our own zone?

So as I am thinking about how this trade must have something positive for me to hang my hat on, another Oiler tweet appears. The Oilers trade Steve Staios to the Flames.

WHAT!?! THE FLAMES?!? WHAT?!? THE FLAMES?!?

It being Steve Staios wasn't shocking to me at all. It was the trade partner. Never before in the history of the Oilers organization has there ever been a trade between the Flames and the Oilers. SHOCKING!?!

So the trade officially was, Steve Staios to the Flames for defenseman Aaron Johnson and the Flames 3rd round pick in either 2010 or 2011. It's the Flames choice what year the Oilers get the pick.

Well there must be one more deal in the line right? Right?

Nope. That's it. The deals are over. *sigh* I'm sad.

After the dust settled, I read something that David Staples said. He says that Tambo doesn't have a plan. He's right. I thought by now Tambo would. But it's quite clear he doesn't.

So now it's 10:00 pm and I still don't feel any better about this hockey club. Ethan Moreau and Patrick O'Sullivan are still here. He failed to get a pick, any pick for Mike Comrie. He failed on a lot of levels today. Steve Tambellini does not give me any hope for the future.

I need hope. Life is built on it.
