BEERS & JEERS PLAYER GRADES

The Cult of Hockey Grading System:
10 perfect game,  9 extraordinary,  8 great,  7 good,  6 above average,
5 average,  4 below average,  3 poor,  2 terrible,  1 deserves to be in minors.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (3) JEERS Brutal. He only played 8:47 and had nothing to show for it but a lousy missed shot. He was benched after banging his stick on the glass in frustration. Lesson learned? He had the lowest time on the ice next to MacIntyre.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (5) He had 1 blocked shot, 4 hits and a giveaway in his 18:09 of ice time.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (5) He assisted on the Penner goal and was -1. He did OK on the penalty kill but was burned twice 5 on 5.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (0) DNP (Injured)

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (6) BEERS He was sticked in the mouth and had to get stitched up. He played hard after that. He had 2 shots, 2 hits and a takeaway. He was on the ice for the Penner goal and finished the night +1. He went 4/5 for 44% on faceoffs.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (4) Not a great night for Mr. Consistent. He was benched with Hall in the 3rd. He had 2 shots and 2 takeaways.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (5) He seen a lot of ice with some of his teammates benched. He played 15:00 and looked OK. I thought he did a lot of things well. His faceoffs sucked. Team worst 5/8 for 38%.

#22 JF JACQUES - (0) DNP (conditioning with the OKC Barons)

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (5) I did like Foster for the most part. He was very involved in the game. He took 8 shots with 2 reaching the net. He picked up an assist on the Penner goal and ended the night +1.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (4) His penalty 57 seconds in starts the tailspin. They scored on that PP. Not the best way to help your team start off on the right foot. He scores the Oilers only goal. Right place at the right time. For a big guy, he could pound guys with checks, but he doesn't.

#28 RYAN JONES - (5) He had a whopping 3:21 minutes of PP time tonight. He had 2 shots and 2 hits. His overall ice time? A personal season high 15:46.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (2) JEERS He played 2:17 and managed to take a dumb penalty. He was trying to stir up some emotion, he puts (can't remember) in a headlock and flops him to the ground. 2 minutes for roughing. He did register 1 hit.

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (1) JEERS Worst. Performance. Ever. (5 goals against. 2 in the first 1:15)

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (5) In relief of Khabi, he did OK. He let in 2 goals but made some decent saves. I see no reason why Dubnyk isn't getting more games. He deserves a chance to play.

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (4) Oy! He made me cringe every time the Canes came into the Oilers zone and Strudwick was there. While he wasn't a 2, it doesn't get much better than a 4. He didn't even have a hit. Isn't he supposed to be the physical part of the team?

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (4) He didn't really do anything out there. Much like Strudwick, when your team is down by a few goals like tonight, crush someone. That's what you get paid for. In his 11:00 minutes of ice time, Renney managed to give him 1:32 of PP time.

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (6) BEERS He played 20:23 and had 12 minutes in penalties (2 for roughing and a game misconduct with about 4 minutes left in the 3rd). He tried his ass of and he threw 6 hits and blocked 4 shots. He did make some errors, but he was a hard guy to play against. My favorite defender tonight.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (4) Brule had the best faceoff percentage for both teams. He went 9/3 for 75%. How is he not a full time center? He finished -2 and had 3 shots.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (3) JEERS He was brutal. He was on the ice for 5 of the Canes' goals. He had a giveaway that resulted in a goal. He finished -3 and it's clear that Strudwick isn't his match made in heaven. He did try and be better by throwing 4 hits and blocking 3 shots, but it just wasn't a great night for Gilbert.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (4) JEERS He did nothing. When the chips were down, he gave up. Why is he n the PK? He barely back checks 5 on 5, how is going to do it well a man down? He was on the ice for 2 PP goals against. While he was better than his linemates, that isn't saying much at all. Booooo to you Hemmer!

#89 SAM GAGNER - (3) JEERS He couldn't do anything right. He was a team worst -4 (he was on for every 5 on 5 goal against) and blew so many covers it was getting frustrating to watch. He had 2 shots and a hit while playing 17:24. Worst game I have ever seen him play.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (3) JEERS Part of the crap the bed gang. Paajarvi had a team worst 3 giveaways and he finished -2. He did have 2 hits and 2 shots, but not much else.

BAD TIMING PENALTY (what is a Bad Timing Penalty?)

Dustin Penner - The penalty to start the game killed the Oilers right off the hop. This game could have been different if that penalty was never taken and the first goal of the game wasn't scored so quick.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (5) Decent all game long. He had 3 hits, 2 blocked shots and a takeaway in 15:27 of ice. But he did take 2 out of the 4 Oilers penalties.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (7) BEERS Fast. The only way to describe him. He made a lot of nice plays and is looking better every game. He had 2 hits, 3 takeaways, a blocked shot and 2 shots on goal. No complaining here.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (6) He have a decent game. He logged a ton of time on the ice and looked like he wanted more.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (7) BEERS He was good. He played 26:00 minutes and was strong on the puck. After a few less than great games in the last little while, I was worried his feet may be bothering him. He looked fine and healthy to me tonight. He adds another assist and he had a hit, a takeaway and 2 blocked shots. Best defenceman on the night.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (6) Horcoff was hurt after playing 8:42. I hope he's not gone for long.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (6) He's been on fire lately. Tonight's game he was good again. He had 3 shots and was 5/5 for 50% on faceoffs. But he was on the ice for the only Hawks goal.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (5) Not a fan of the line he's on. He looks his best with Horcoff. I thought he was the best on the line. Good once again on the penalty kill. Smart player even when he's not attracting the focus.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (5) He seen some added ice time after Horcoff went down. He responded nicely. I liked that he had a little extra jump in his steps. He had 2 hits, but was a team worst 2/5 for 29%.

#22 JF JACQUES - (0) DNP (Injured)

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (7) BEERS He was dynamite! He scored to get the ball rolling and he played smart hockey all night long. He had 3 hits, 3 shots, and had a takeaway and a blocked shot. He played 17:31.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (6) He actually used his big frame well tonight. He was on for both Oiler goals and he just seemed to make things happen. Glad to see he's motivated again. In his 17:16 of ice time, he had 1 shot, 1 hit, 1 blocked shot and 1 takeaway.

#28 RYAN JONES - (6) He along with Fraser seen more ice than normal. He had 2 shots, a hot and a takeaway. Nothing real to complain about here.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (8) BEERS That save was FREAKING AWESOME! Watch the highlights above. Wow! He was great all game. He made the little saves along with the big ones. WHen the Oilers were asleep, Khabi wasn't. The curse of the former Oilers continued as Pisani popped one by him.

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (backup)

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (6) All of the sudden guys like Strudwick and Vandermeer are looking good to me. Either I had a few too many beers, or he really did play well. He had 3 blocked shots and 2 hits in his 18:12 of ice time.

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (6) He played well. I loved his fight with John Scott. He was jerseyed and he still kept going. lol. Love that Storts. He actual hockey game was pretty good. He's not a liability out there. He had 3 hits and played 6:55.

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (0) DNP (Injured)

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (6) Brule has, like Cogliano, improved a lot since Penner has been on their line. He had 3 shots, 3 hits and a takeaway and was burning up the ice. I don't understand why he isn't getting a look on the pk?

#77 TOM GILBERT - (7) BEERS He was pretty good tonight and he did what he had to do to be successful. He had 5 shots that couldn't find the back of the net and he once again blocks a team high, 4 shots. He does quietly play a solid game. He was dependable tonight.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (8) BEERS He was brilliant tonight. The best Hemsky game that I have seen in a long, long time. He assisted on both goals and played almost 20 minutes.

#89 SAM GAGNER - (4) He started out OK, but was I disappointed with him tonight (other than his goal).

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (5) I hate this line. They don't work well together. He had 2 shots in his 14:09 of ice time. His most consistent quality? He drew another penalty.

My Dad arrived at my house last night for his once a year visit. We watched the game together for the first time in years. We also like some "pops" while we watch the game. So by the time it was over, I was in no shape to write the player grades. So I encourage you to read Bruce McCurdy's grades at the Cult of Hockey. I agree with him 100%.

10 perfect game,  9 extraordinary,  8 great,  7 good,  6 above average,
5 average,  4 below average,  3 poor,  2 terrible,  1 deserves to be in minors.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (5) He didn't do a whole lot tonight. He took 2 shots and had a giveaway. Not a stand out night like he's been dishing out lately. I was starting to think that the physical play scares him a little.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (6) He had 2 assists and really should have been +3, but he went off before the 3rd goal was scored even though he was awarded an assist on that play. Funny huh? He played 17:07 and he had 1 shot, 3 hits, 1 blocked shot, but tied for a team worst, 3 giveaways. His 3 hits led the team in that category. Just too bad about the giveaways.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (5) He was OK. While he did look less sloppy and a little more comfortable with the puck, I didn't think he was very good. He needs to assert himself more. Take charge of that back end. 2 shots, 1 hit (not enough), 3 blocked shots (tied for a team high) and 2 giveaways.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (5) Horcoff was below average. In his 20 minutes in ice time, he only had 1 shot on goal. He was 6/8 for 43% on faceoffs. I hope Cappy can play better against the Wings on Friday. This line needs to chip in.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (7) BEERS It seems like the line change was a good one. Penner seems to fire these guys up. Cogliano picked up 2 assists tonight and on top of that, he made plays. He was more than just a fast player. One of the great plays was the play to Brule for the one timer goal. Dekes a few guys and tosses Brule a beauty for a nice tine time goal. Even on the Penner goal, that was a result from Cogliano's hard work. Cogliano needed a game like this.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (5) Not a great game. He made some nice plays and looked OK, but he needed to play like he has been. While the line was decent on scoring chances, they failed to connect.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (6) Much, much better game. His penalty kill was great. He was 5/6 for 45% on faceoffs. He also blocked 3 shots and had a takeaway and a hit. All this in only 10:03 of ice time. His downside? The 2 giveaways.

#22 JF JACQUES - (0) DNP (Injured)

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (3) He was not very good. He blew so many plays it was getting redundant. He did take 3 shots, but none found the back of the net.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (6) He scores on a nice wrap around on Luongo. That whole shift he was a force. He powered his way around there and after a nice hit by Cogliano, Pens scoops the puck and scores. His penalty shortly after that was really high and was unnecessary. Not sure what he was thinking with that?

#28 RYAN JONES - (6) He surprised the Oiler fans and himself with a dirty goal in the 3rd. It helped get the ball rolling and the 4th line made things happen. The 4th line was also on the ice for the fluke winner. So even though that sucked, this was a much different line than how they were a few games ago. He had 3 shots in 7:19 of ice time.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (5) The winning goal was a joke. It infuriates me to think about it. Maybe for that slit second he stopped watching the puck? A weak backhand trickles through the whole zone and past Khabi. Tough to go out that way. all game was was 50/50. 50% good. Made great reads and some big saves. But the other 50 was not that good. He was torched in the 1st for 2 goals. Sure the team sucked, but 2 out of the 3 he could have made the save, nevermind the winner. Ugh!

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (backup)

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (4) Average Strudwick type of game. I have nothing to say about him other than I don't like him much as a player. Bring up Shawn Belle.

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (6) He played decent. He had some real good shifts. He picked up his first point of the season with an assist on the Jones goal. He also had a couple of hits and a shot.

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (4) Peckham was not all that great tonight. He was killed in chances and was -1. He didn't really play all that physical like he does, so he was largely ineffective. To be fair, he did play against the Sedins a lot.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (7) BEERS Brule scores the 3rd and tying goal. Cogs make some nice moves and with a sweet pass to Brule, he scored a bomber. He has found that chemistry with Cogliano and Penner and they seem to be heading in a good direction. He was +2 with the goal and had 2 takeaways as well.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (4) Not his best game. He logged a ton of time (24:41) and fired 7 shots in total (only 1 hit the net) but his 3 giveaways are getting very common. He lost the puck on the Canucks blue line and had to take a penalty on the backcheck. I wasn't a fan of his tonight.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (4) JEERS He was nailed all game. I started to feel sorry for him after a while. I'm a little surprised that none of his teammates sent a message back. He's the "best" player. I didn't see anyone engage Alberts. He was out chanced all game. Not his best. But he did try.

#89 SAM GAGNER - (4) JEERS He was the same as Hemsky. He was 8/11 for 42% on the faceoffs. Also like Hemsky, he tried but came up short.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (4) JEERS He was also part of the suck line. I'd expect a better game on Friday.

10 perfect game,  9 extraordinary,  8 great,  7 good,  6 above average,
5 average,  4 below average,  3 poor,  2 terrible,  1 deserves to be in minors.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (7) Hall scores his second ever NHL goal and picks up an assist. Kind of like last night's game, another 2 points. He played with some great confidence and he earned his 17:02 of ice time. He had 2 shots, a hit and a takeaway. He did more than the stats suggest.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (6) I liked Smid. He played a ton (22:27) and never really looked out of it. He was on the ice for the Dowell goal but that was all Strudwick. He had 2 hits and 2 blocked shots.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (6) He was pretty decent. Why? Like I said yesterday, maybe he needed less time on the ice? He played 6 minutes less (22:54) and looked better. Let's hope Renney continues this. Whitney had 1 assist, was +2,

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (8) BEERS Horcoff picks up another 2 assists and seems to be on fire playing with the kids. I mean really, how hard is it? Skate, get puck, pass to Eberle or Hall, notch assist. He was 10/7 fro 59% on faceoffs. That helped the Oilers be better. He needs to stay above 50%.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (7) It seems like the line change has helped Cogs. He scores his first of the year from Brule and Foster. He didn't make any glaring mistakes and was great on faceoffs. 5/2 for 71%. He had 2 shots, 2 hits, 1 takeaway and 2 blocked shots. All this in 14:55 of ice time.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (8) BEERS Solid game again. How does he do it? He scores and picks up an assist in 19:46. He had 3 shots on goal and a team high, 3 takeaways. Did I mention his goal was another sweet one?

#16 COLIN FRASER - (6) Much better game for Fraser. Renney finally went for it with the 4th line and it paid off. They didn't get scored on. 2 hits and 2 shots in 9:11 of ice time.

#22 JF JACQUES - (0) DNP (Injured)

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (6) He played his first game since the groin injury. He had 2 assists and was +3. He took 2 shots and played a rounded game. His injury looked ok but his playing time was limited. He only skated 14:19, so to rack up those kind of stats, he had a pretty good game.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (5) He had chemistry with Brule and Cogliano. While he did play OK in front of the net, he didn't really make much of an impact on this game. He was +1 in 13:36 of ice time.

#28 RYAN JONES - (6) He scored his 2nd of the year. He had a big shot block (2 in total) that stung him and he didn't get scored on. While his overall game was worth a 5, his goal IMO bumped him to a 6.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (4) JEERS He was average or slightly below. He let in 4 goals and that stinks. He had 2 of the Oilers 6 giveaways and he made me grouchy. One minute he's a freaking all star, the next he's a bum off the street wearing goalie gear. No consistency. He can make a big save, but the little ones sneak in. Not all the goals were his fault though, but he didn't help out much. Lucky the team playing in front of him scored a bunch.

#38 JEFF DESLAURIERS - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (3)  JEERS He was, in my books, expected to be not great anyways. But explain how he's the only Oiler -1? He played 20:17 and had a funny play where he was playing the puck and he stepped on the puck. While falling down, Dowell snags it and scored (not so funny part). Why do we have to have him in the lineup? Oh right... him or Vandermeer. Oy!

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (6) He was good. Not bad for a guy who hasn't played in a while. His line didn't get beat and he had 2 hits and was +1 in 7:32. Glad to see him play again.

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (5) He could have been better, but with a win, it's hard to bitch. He finished +2 and played 18:57. He had no shots and only had 1 hit. But I suppose when your winning, no need to push the envelope.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (6) Brule had a team high 5 hits but also had a team high, 2 penalties. Both were not great plays by Brule. He had an assist on the Cogliano goal. If he wants more ice time, he needs to shoot more. Hitting is good, but shooting gets you out there.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (6) Not noticed much other than right off the hop. He blocked shots tonight like he always does and had 3. He finished +3 and was on the ice for 21:06. He could shoot more.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (8) BEERS He was the worst on the team with 3 giveaways. That's the bad. The good? He had a goal and an assist while finishing +2. He had 3 blocked shots and 2 shots. He created lots of chances and really made the Hawks pay attention.

#89 SAM GAGNER - (7) He scores his first 2 goals of the year. 1 for real and 1 in an empty net. I liked the 1st line and I thought Gags was a big part of it. 2 takeaways and 2 shots in 16:13. His faceoffs still stunk at 38%. I don't know how he's going to fix that?

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (7) He knows how to pass that puck. He's not afraid to hold it either. His poise is evident when playing with Hemsky and Gagner. It's fun to watch him play. He had 2 assists and was +3 in 16:10 of ice time. He didn't register a shot and I hope that's not a common sight. Good overall game for Paajarvi.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (4) His penalty he took was a crap one, but his overall game wasn't so bad. It wasn't good either, but he was not stinking up the joint like we are used to. He played 22:18 and could have hit the Jackets a little more. Just like any other game this year, he was a step behind.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (8) BEERS Hall scores his first ever NHL goal. It wasn't the Eberle pretty goal, but a tip in is just as good. The monkey is off the back. He also picked up an assist on the Horcoff goal. Hall was moved up to the 1st line near the end of the 2nd period and excelled. I had hoped for him to be removed off the 3rd line and my wishes came to fruition. He only played 13:27 but managed the goal and assist, plus he had 8 shots in total with 4 hitting the net, and he had 2 hits and 2 takeaways. Hall played so well, Sportsnet picked him as 1st star.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (6) Decent game for Smid. He did look slow in the toes. To much pregame meal? He didn't rack up any stats other than a penalty and a hit. He does need to bring the "Spaz" back into his bag of tricks. I miss the Smid Snap Show.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (4) JEERS He was -2 by the end of the 1st. Not sure what to think about Whitney anymore. Is there an injury that we don't know about? Is there some mental struggles going on? One shift he looks like the 28 minute a night guy. Solid and making smart plays. The next shift he's making basic errors and brutal plays. Is all the ice time catching up with him? Is this where it shows that he's a #2 guy and not the #1 guy the Oilers are making him be? This is a couple games in a row now where he doesn't look like the guy from last year, or even the beginning of this year. Whitney needs some 1 on 1 coaching right now to figure this out.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (7) BEERS Cappy was pretty good tonight. Watching him you can see he's concentrating on his defensive responsibilities more than the offensive. Good for him. I seen him a few times behind the defence on plays coming back to the Oilers zone. But when it's PP time, he can be that guy too. He scored tonight on the power play. He played 24:33, had the PP goal, was +1, had 6 shots and 2 takeaways. On faceoffs he was 12/13 for 48%. If you look at the scoring chances, Horcoff was 7/3. That's damn good! I wonder... how didn't he get considered a star?

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (3) JEERS Another stinker from Cogliano. Lord knows he's trying. He was caught a few times flat footed and looked like a deer in a headlights. He is giving it his all, but when speed is your only weapon, your limited on how effective you can be in a game. And for the 180, 673th time, why is he still a center?

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (7) BEERS Looks like the Oilers have themselves the future leader of penalty killers. He's awesome at it now, wait 5 years. He picked up an assist on the Horcoff PP goal and was +1 by nights end (he was on for the Hall goal too). He's a very gifted player. It looks like that extra year in juniors paid off. He's into game 8 of his career and he plays like a vet. Very impressive!

#16 COLIN FRASER - (4) I feel bad for Fraser. I think he's better than how he's being treated. Maybe he should get a crack at being the 3rd line center?

#22 JF JACQUES - (0) DNP (Injured)

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (0) DNP (Injured)

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (5) He was a 50/50 guy for me tonight. Half of me liked him when he was playing hard and crashing the net. My other half though he was lazy and a floater. He had 3 shots and was really good at the scoring chance percentage but, I feel like he needs to up his game. Big time. Tonight wasn't good enough.

#28 RYAN JONES - (4) Somewhere on a stinky bus in the US, Liam Reddox is wondering why Jones isn't on that stinky bus. He played 5:18 and had 3 hits.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (4) His ice time improved this game. He even scored a non goal.  The whistle blew and it shouldn't have and he scored. Too bad, that would have been great. On a side note: I don't know why Stortini didn't play instead. Did he piss off Renney at some point?

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#38 JEFF DESLAURIERS - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (8) BEERS For his first game action of the year, he was great. He made some big saves and the one goal was impossible to stop. So we can really only fault one goal to Dubnyk even though that's even questionable. It's too bad he sucked in the shootout because I thought he was going to pull off the win. He faced 41 shots, not including the 2 in the shootout. I couldn't decide if he was a 7 or an 8. So I went with 8. He deserves it. No?

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (6)  He was OK. He played a simple yet, somewhat effective game. He made a few errors but nothing that cost the team. He had 2 hits. What else can I say?

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (6) He had some good crashes and bangs. Not sure how he only was credited with only 2 hits. He had more than that on one shift on a PK. He was almost crossing the line a few times. Peckham is growing into a good physical hockey player. He can actually pass the puck as well. That's not a bonus, but a requirement.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (4) JEERS Brule had a few good chances and I was thinking he was going to score a goal tonight. He didn't (he did ring it off the post in the shootout). He had fire in his eyes for the first half of the game, but it seems like he can't do any good playing with Cogliano. He needs a partner change and I think he will pull out of this. He's a good player, just not with Cogs.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (6) Arguably the best Oilers defenceman tonight. That's not saying much for this crew either. He was even in chances for and against and never really produced any significant stat. But he played his normal game. Gilbert was Gilbert.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (7) He was good. He made a real nice pass to Peckham for the Hall goal. I have been harsh on Hemsky lately. I just expect way more out of him. He did out chance the Blue Jackets often and he led the team in that department. He can create magic. I just wish we could see more of it. He did block 2 shots and the one hurt him. He sucked it up and stayed out till the shift was over. He even managed to break up a pass right after that shot block. Things are looking better for Ales.

#89 SAM GAGNER - (6) He was OK. He was killed on faceoffs again. He was 6/14 for 30%. Worst on the team. If he wants to stay as the #1 center, that needs some massive improvement. I did like the way he moved the puck. He didn't hold it long before passing to someone open. He created some good chances and I like him with Hemsky. Adding Hall helped.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (6) A quiet game for Paajarvi. He did well, but could only do so much in the 12:50 of ice time. He took 4 shots with 3 making it to the goalie. Not much to say about him other than he's a good player. Give him more time and he will be one of the best Oilers.

BEERS & JEERS PLAYER GRADES

The Cult of Hockey Grading System:
10 perfect game,  9 extraordinary,  8 great,  7 good,  6 above average,
5 average,  4 below average,  3 poor,  2 terrible,  1 deserves to be in minors.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (5) Hall like the rest of the Oilers didn't show up at the start. He was hit a few times and seemed to bounce back. That's a good sign. He had 18:56 of ice time and was -1.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (6) Better game for Smid. He played a little more nasty than normal. He was +1 and blocked a team high, 5 blocked shots. Smid wasn't on for any of the special teams goals. He played well.

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (4) JEERS Leads the team in ice time, again. 28:10. He sucked big time in the first half of this game. Sucked bad. He might have had 2 assists, but his 4 giveaways out weigh that. That's four that counted. I seen way more than that. Interesting note; he was on the ice for 7 out of the 8 goals scored tonight. Kind of good, kind of bad. He was going to get a score of 3, but the 2 assists bumped it up to a 4.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (5) Horcoff went 14/11 for 56% on faceoffs tonight. That was the best on the team. But the important ones were late in the game and it was in the Oilers zone. Flames could have had a great chance, but Horcs won the draw. I said before the 3rd started that this was going to be his 1st test as a captain. Could he rally the troops? I think he did his job.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (5) He probably played his best game of the year. He had an assist and played 16:16. He even seen some overtime ice time. He was OK tonight. He took 4 shots and went 4/5 for 44% on faceoffs. Much improved game.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (7) BEERS Another good game from the rookie. He scored early in the 3rd to get it all going and was +1 by games end. I love Eberle! He's so smart with the puck it's ridiculous. You can't teach that. That's a gift. He had 4 shots and yet I feel like he didn't shoot enough. He gets chances, he just needs to try it more.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (3) He played minimal once again. In his 2:43, he managed to drop his gloves and stick up for Hall after he was nailed and he racked up 17 penalty minutes (instigator, fighting, misconduct). On a side note; Congrats to him on the birth of his baby!!!

#22 JF JACQUES - (0) DNP (Injured)

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (5) He was playing well before he hurt his groin. Ouch! He finally scored his first goal. Then the injury. I'd say a 5 is fair for his 11:16 of ice time.

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (4) JEERS For a big guy, he sucked. The first half of the game he skated around like it was public skating. Geez he pisses me off. He can dominate a game, if he wants to. Tonight he didn't want to. Gagner in a way, made him play better in the 3rd. He did block a shot when it mattered the most, but he needed that effort all game. For some reason Renney put him out for the shootout. Not sure why.

#28 RYAN JONES - (3) 3:30 of ice time. Not much to write about.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (3) 1:49 of ice time. He did nothing much like Jones.

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (4) JEERS He sucked bad in the first half. Bad. He was off his game. Sure he faced a lot of shots, but the goals he did let in were soft. He needs to be sat for a game of two. He can't play every game.

#38 JEFF DESLAURIERS - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (5)  He was decent. He had a fight with Jackman that he started and kind of was beat. He took some hard punches to the head. He played 19:24 and while he still sucked, he wasn't that bad. He even saw some overtime time.

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (6) He was not bad in a game full of bad. Made some good hits and picked up an assist. *gasp* He's caught up to Hall! 21:37 of ice time and he didn't play bad. He had a team high, 5 hits. Good for Theo. Hope the trend continues. Just watch those penalties.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (5) Brule was banging and crashing. At one point he had Glencross wanting to fight. He did his job and didn't get burned by the Flames. He took 3 shots on goal. His low point, 0/5 for 0% on faceoffs. Ouch!

#77 TOM GILBERT - (5) I don't know how to grade Gilbert. He was on the ice for a lot of goals, but he did play 28:54. His soft play continues to plague him as Gilbert a few times gave the puck away in his own zone. Nice to see him score and he blocked some key shots at key times. I didn't think he was nearly as bad as Whitney was.

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (4) JEERS He did nothing to deserve the A on his jersey. Hemsky needs to be a leader on this team and I'm sure it's not because he's a great talker. He needs to play hard 100% of the time. When the Oilers started sucking and Penner was lollygagging, Hemsky should have been that guy, not Gagner. Hemsky disappointed me tonight. He can do better than that, and we should expect it. Even his shootout goal attempt was lame.

#89 SAM GAGNER - (6) BEERS He gets a 6 based on effort and for the fight. He fought Olli Jokinen and did quite well. His 4th if your counting. I thought Sam played like he was wanting to win this game on his own. He was playing gritty and really stuck out to me as a difference maker. He made a few passes to Penner in the 3rd that really seemed to get him going. He did the same for Hemsky. Watching him tonight is one of the reasons why I said he should be captain.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (7) BEERS A goal and an assist. Not bad! He was +2 at the end of the night and had 4 shots. In his 17:16 of ice time, he made the most out of it. I like everything about these kids. You can tell he's not scared to play in this league. He seems to get going more when the team struggled. That's a good sign for the future of the Oilers.

BAD TIMING PENALTY (what is a Bad Timing Penalty?)

Theo Peckham - His 3rd period High-Stick penalty was a blatant call. No way the ref missed it. It was a needless penalty and it could have cost the Oilers the game. He needs to be more cafefull with his stick near the end of a game like that. Lesson learned.
