THE MEAT AND POTATOES

The Good:

- JDD was fan-freaking-tastic! He made some huge saves and really made sure the Canucks weren't going to tie the game. Wow! He faced 33 shots and looked like a for real #1 guy. Can this guy stay around for a while or does he disappear the next game?

- Tom Gilbert scores a goal and notches an assist to lead the offence for the Oilers. His goal came on his only shot of the game and it was his first goal in 42 games. Ouch! He also had 3 takeaways and 2 blocked shots. Great game for Gilbert. All this in 22:23 of ice time.

- Ryan Whitney has been very, very good since acquiring him for Visnovsky. Tonight he had 3 hits and played a team high 24:46. He's going to be fun to watch next year.

- Stortini was challenged a lot and never dropped the gloves. What for? The Oilers were leading all game. I was surprised that he didn't to be honest. With 11:01 of ice time, he was pretty good. He had 5 hits.

- Andrew Cogliano is a new player. He's still rockin' it up with Brule and Penner and it showed by him scoring tonight. Maybe he found a home with those two guys for next season?

The Not So Good:

- Taylor Chorney needs to not be in the NHL at this point. We have all seen the good Chorney. Tonight wasn't that guy. But when you don't have much other options, he'll do.

- Ethan Moreau should NOT get 16:58 in ice time. That's just plain nuts.

- Sam Gagner on the 4th line is stupid. STUPID!

- Being 40% on faceoffs isn't good enough to be a winner. I really hope the Oilers address this because this happens more games than it should. And it's not just one player, it's all the centers.

The Side Dish:

- No Jordan Eberle until Friday. I know... it sucks.

- The Stockton Thunder have added Bryan Young and Matt Marquardt as they were assigned to Stockton.

Young and Marquardt Sent Down To The Stockton Thunder

NHL Seasoned Young, LW Marquardt Coming

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, a proud affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League and Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League, announced Springfield has reassigned defenseman Bryan Young and Edmonton has reassigned left wing Matt Marquardt (MAR-kwart) from Springfield to the Thunder.

Both Young, 23, and Marquardt, 22, are expected to be in uniform for the Thunder's next game on Friday, Mar. 26 against the Las Vegas Wranglers, at Stockton Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m. (StocktonThunder.com/B2 Networks).

Young was originally assigned to the Thunder from Springfield on Oct. 7 and is playing under an AHL contract to Springfield. He has appeared in 176 career games in four seasons (2006-10) in the AHL with Springfield, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Milwaukee, scoring 18 points (3g-15a) while collecting 145 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-1, 191-pound defenseman was originally selected by the Oilers in the fifth round (146th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and has skated in 38 games with the Thunder this season, scoring eight points (2g-6a) and posting 43 penalty minutes. Additionally, Young has added seven games and 11 penalty minutes this year with the Falcons.

In 2006-07, Young became the first player in Thunder history to make his NHL debut and in his four-year (2006-10) career, he has suited up in 17 career NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers, posting 10 penalty minutes.

During that season, Young skated in 17 games for the Thunder and tallied four assists and 17 penalty minutes.

Marquardt was selected in the seventh round (194th overall) by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and acquired by Edmonton on Mar. 2, 2010 in exchange for defenseman Cody Wild. In two AHL seasons (2008-10) he has appeared in 117 combined games with the Providence Bruins and Springfield, scoring 32 points (10g-22a) while posting 70 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-3, 229-pound forward also suited up in nine games this season for the Reading Royals, notching a goal, two assists and 14 penalty minutes. In 46 combined AHL games this season with Providence and Springfield, he has scored 10 points (1g-9a) and added 25 penalty minutes.

The North Bay, Ontario native spent three years (2005-08) of his junior career with Moncton and Baie-Comeau of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, suiting up in 203 career games while posting 164 points (100g-64a), 100 goals and 208 penalty minutes. He scored a career-high 70 points (41g-29a) and 41 goals in 2006-07 with Moncton, leading the team in scoring and goals.

A two-time recipient of the ECHL "Award of Excellence," the Thunder was voted "Best Local Sports Team" by readers of the San Joaquin Magazine, has led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew 223,854 fans to Stockton Arena in 2008-09. It's All Over - The 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Are Officially Over

Well that's it folks. The Olympics are over and now The Paralympics are officially over. That's it. All done.

To be honest, I'm a little sad about it. I really enjoyed the Olympics and the Paralympics.  I seen some great stories over the last month or so and it's been a crazy time. I'm very proud of all the Canadian athletes that participated in both games. Just one last time for another 4 years... GO CANADA!

OK. That's out of my system. The Canadians did pretty good at the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver. After it was all said and done, Canada had 10 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals for 19 in total. Excellent work guys and girls. *claps hands* Those 19 medals helped Canada finish in 3rd overall at the Paralympics. Considering what Canada did at the Olympic games and what Canada did at the Paralympics, I'd say the podium was owned, don't you?

As I said above, there was some key stories that I followed. I watched a lot of the Team Canada sledge hockey games. As I had written before, the game of sledge hockey is freaking intense. Massive body checks that would hurt most people were flying all over the place. Those players were not only creative with their plays, they had some very deadly shots. Being a goalie sure didn't look easy.

Canada had won the gold at the last Paralympics and being on home soil this time, they were heavy favorites to win gold once again. In the semi finals they met up with Japan. The game was a hard fought game but the Canadians just couldn't score on the Japanese goalie. He played well and made some huge saves to keep his team in it. But as time was winding down and with the score tied up at one each, the Japanese team found a way to score. With 1:13 left in the 3rd period, the Japanese made it a 2-1 game. With Canada pressing in the last few seconds, they made an error and while making a bad pass, the puck slid all the down into their own net. 3-1 Japan. Game over and so is the gold medal sweep in hockey (Men's and Ladies won gold in Olympic Games).

So now they were off for the bronze medal game and they were up against Norway. Once again the Canadians were confidant in their team going into the game. I never questioned them NOT winning the bronze. But they didn't. The Norwegians played a heck of a game - they were silver medalists in 2006 - and really took it to the Canadians. They out shot Canada 8-1 in the 3rd period and Canada just couldn't muster any offence and they lost 2-1.

The gold medal favorites finish 4th. Not how I had envisioned it at all. I'm sure either did they.

Brian McKeever had himself a few stories. First, he was going to ski in the Olympics (the men's 50km cross-country race). Then out of the blue, he's not in the because the coach pulled him in favor of another racer who had done well in a earlier event at the games. McKeever was devastated by the news. And rightfully so. He just wanted to be treated fairly regardless if he's visually impaired. He has a slight vision problem where he can't see the straight ahead stuff, just the peripheral view. So obviously when you ski in the Olympics, you can't have a guide and that presents challenges for Brian. His older brother, Robin McKeever, competes as his guide when Brian skis in the Paralympics. But it was a fight he could not fight so get changed his focus to concentrating on the Paralympics.

He did however do great at the Paralympics and that helped ease the pain from the previous days. Brian McKeever won three gold medals at the 2010 Paralympic Games. And we here at Oilers Jambalaya congratulate Brian McKeever for his dedication and drive to be the best.

- Gold in the 1km Sprint Visually Impaired
- Gold in the 10km Classic Visually Impaired
- Gold in the 20km Freestyle Visually Impaired

The other sports were fun to watch but i really didn't have an attachment to anybody else like sledge hockey and Brian McKeever. I did however learn about a few different sports that I never really knew about. Like the wheelchair curling was fun tho watch. No sweepers, just throw the rock and where it goes, it goes. To win at wheelchair curling, you need to be a skilled shot.

Team Canada in wheelchair curling consists of Jim Armstrong,  Darryl Neighbour, Ina Forrest, Sonja Gaudet and Bruno Yizek. These fine folks won gold in a thrilling 8-7 game against Korea. This was a very fun game to watch.

I didn't get to watch much of the downhill ski events. But what I did see it was pretty exciting. It takes a lot of guts to do what these athletes do. Here is a great story about Canadian skier Lauren Woolstencroft who won FIVE gold medals. She was amazing and is such a great story.

Thanks to everyone that helps to put on the Olympic and Paralympic games. You all did a wonderful job. THANK YOU CANADA!!!  WOOoOooOoOOoOOO!!!
