Players Grades - Cult of Hockey - Oilers vs Penguins (1/14/10)

They played a great 40 minutes and that's fine and dandy, but why always blow a game in the 3rd? The last time the Pens came here the Oilers lost 4-2 in the same fashion.  The Oilers were up 2-0 after two periods and Boom! 4-2 final.  Deja Vu... well, except tonight's game was a 3-2 final.

The Bad Timing Penalty of the evening was the Ryan Stone hooking call in the 3rd.  That killed it for the Oilers.  The Penguins literally put their foot on the gas and took this game over.  Can the Oilers ever win a game? It's making you wonder.

The Cult of Hockey Grading System: 10-perfect game, 9 extraordinary, 8 great, 7 good, 6 above average, 5 average, 4 below average, 3 poor, 2 terrible, 1 deserves to be in minors.

#5 Ladislav Smid (4) - He was on for all three of the Penguins goals. Two were even strength and one was on the PK.  While he was trying to be a pest, he really didn't do anything and he in my opinion, sucked.  He had 2 giveaways and 4 blocked shots.  He can be way better than that.

#12 Robert Nilsson (8) - I really liked him tonight. He played a heck of a game even though he didn't score any points.  He was double shifted and was put out a lot and really earned his ice time (22:34).  He really does have an amazing talent and it's really nice to see him be consistent.  Tonight he was blocking shots (3), he was shooting the puck (4 shots), and best of all, he had 4 takeaways and only 1 giveaway.  That's impressive.

#13 Andrew Cogliano (7) - I really wanted to give him an 8 because he was outstanding in this game, but he was on for both even strength goals against.  But how can you put much blame on him when he's out there with Moreau and Stortini?  He was played with both the 3rd and the 4th lines and some PK and PP time and did a great job.  He scores the first goal of the game on the PP and does it with O'Sullivan and Potulny.  Like I said, I liked him.

#16 Ryan Potulny (6) He played a decent game.  He had some good chances and had 4 shots on goal.   He blocked a couple of shots and was on the ice for both Oiler goals.  He plays a real structured game and that's taking him to the next level.

#18 Ethan Moreau (3) When you look at a player and you think to yourself, can he contribute and make a difference to this hockey club?  I don't think he can anymore.  He is a player that can't keep up.  Not only speed, but decision making as well.  One has to wonder if it's his eye injury that is still bothering him or maybe it's that fact that he's just getting older while the game is getting younger?  He seemed out of sync with his linemates and it showed as he has nothing on the stat sheet other than a -2. If the rumors are true, take any deal you can Tambo and pull the trigger with Anaheim.  Need New Captain!

#19 Patrick O'Sullivan (7) - He was outstanding tonight.  He had his head in the game and he made some great plays that led to two slick PP goals.  He was the driving force behind those Oiler goals.   The first goal he made a nice pass to Cogliano who scored and the second goal he took a shot and picked up his rebound, went to the half wall and passed it rink wide to Visnovsky who pounded it in.  If only he could do this for 82 games.

#22 JF Jacques (4) - He only played 6:27 and he did nothing.  No hitting, no getting people mad, nothing.  He just didn't have a centerman to play with and that may have been part of it.  If Horcoff had played, I bet he would have seen more ice time.  But still, 6:27 is long enough to register more than 1 hit and he failed to do that.

#24 Steve Staios (6) - I actually had no problem with the way he played tonight.  He didn't do anything special, but he played hard and made decent puck choices.  He didn't get scored on and even tried being offensive for a minute or two with a good rush to the net.  Some games Staios looks slow and bench able, but tonight he was the opposite.  He was good.

#27 Dustin Penner (7) - The big guy was pretty good and played 22:03.  I liked his hustle and his willingness to bang and crash.  You know, bang bodies and crash the net (very Cam Neely like).  He was a force but just couldn't get a puck in the net.  He had 5 shots and had a glorious chance to score on a breakaway due to his hustle and speed.  That's right folks, a flying donair. I'm not sure why he just doesn't play center? Who knew he was so good at faceoffs?  He was 7W 2L for 78%.  As much as I like him with Gagner and Nilsson, he really needs to go back to playing with Brule.  The feed off each other and they both play better as a result.

#32 Ryan Stone (4) He was slotted for a 5 when he took the games Bad Timing Penalty and basically gave the momentum to the Pens.  His only real high point of the game was his chance he had but shot it right at Fleury for a no goal.  He was a non factor tonight.

#34 Fernando Pisani (5) - Not great game at all for Fernando.  He did do well on the PK so I won't knock him for that.  But other wise played an average game.

#37 Denis Grebeshkov (6) - While he did have one giveaway, that was it for errors for him.  I kept waiting for him to crack in this game and he didn't.  He played a smart and reliable game.

#38 Jeff Deslauriers (N/A) - He was a bench warmer and did not play.

#40 Devan Dubnyk (7) - While he was on the losing side of things, he did play a great first two periods.  He was stellar.  But once the Stanley Cup champs come flying, it's hard to stop them.  The last goal was a fluke and it always sucks for the goalies on those.  I was really impressed by the way he handled himself in this game.  I hope he gets more playing time as I think he will show us how good he can be.

#43 Jason Strudwick (N/A) - With Horcoff going out due to sudden case of being violently ill and was sent home immediately, that meant Strudwick was in.  What I don't understand, why not play him with Stortini and Moreau?  Why have a guy sitting there when he could do a little 4th line duty?  Strudwick only played 2:38 as a defenseman and does not get ranked.

#44 Sheldon Souray (5) - Big sexy was not great but was better than the last game.  He fired the puck a lot more tonight (he took 8 in total and 2 only hitting the net) which is good to see.  Those are hard shots and why not make the goalie/defenseman a little puck shy?  He had 2 hits and but had a team high of 3 giveaways.  Ouch!  This is two games in a row where he isn't the same guy he was a week ago.  He's lost the fire.  Maybe he does want out now via trade?

#46 Zack Stortini (4) - He had a nice wrap around chance but that was about it for the game for good stuff.  I would like to see some better suited line mates for him.  In his 10:28 of ice time, he managed to be -2, he had no hits and had a giveaway.  For what it's worth, he went 4W 1L for 80% on faceoffs.  I guess that's a positive.

#71 Lubomir Visnovsky (7) - He scores the Oilers 2nd goal on the PP and picks up an assist on the first Oilers PP goal.  He was PP specialist.  It's just too bad he was bad 5 on 5.  He was burned along with Smid on the Penguins two even strength goals and that brought him down to a -2.  I did like his play though.

#77 Tom Gilbert (6) - He played an OK game.  He didn't really do much other than 4 blocked shots.  His low point was his 3 giveaways.  Not a good night in that department for him and Souray.  I've seen him better than he was tonight.

#89 Sam Gagner (6) - He was flying around out there and gave it a good try.  He had 5 shots and did pretty good at the faceoffs going 10W 7L for 59%.  He would have won more but the Pens would get by all the Oilers and beat them to the puck.  He plays great with Nilsson and Penner but I don't think they are a #1 line.  Sam had an impotant role tonight and I don't think he disappointed.

- Who's Out? Who's in? Brule is sick once again and that means JF Jacques is back in to the lineup.  Comrie, Khabibulin, Hemsky and Pouliot are still out and won't play tonight.

- After the wonderful mini camp, the Oilers should be a better team right? Right?

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Ethan Moreau - Of course it's the Captain. I mean really... who else right?  At 14:59 of the 3rd period, Moreau takes the Oilers only penalty of the game and does it in style with another hooking call. The Predators score on that PP and I'm sure somewhere, Moreau is blaming the PK unit for allowing that goal and crushing the teams momentum that it was building for a comeback.  Trade this guy ASAP.

GAME STAT SHEET

------------------

BEERS

Dustin Penner - He was a workhorse (22:55 of ice time) and played a heck of a game. His low point was his -2 rating.  However the -2 wasn't really pinned on him. He was playing with everyone and was trying to do everything.  He scored a goal and had 6 shots. All in all, he was trying his butt off and he was good.  Frosty Bud? Cheers!

Ryan Potulny - He had a goal and an assist and played a pretty good game.  Once again he surprises me.  He did the little things right and impressed me with his play.  It`s Miller Time for Potsy. Cheers!

Visnovsky/Smid - The bad news first: Visnovsky had 5 giveaways. Ouch!  The good news: This was a good tandem.  They were great and both ended up +1.  Visnovsky managed an assist on the last PP goal and even blocked a couple of shots.  Smid on the other hand played a smart game.  I liked these two tonight.  Cold beeeerrrr heeeeerrree. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Devan Dubnyk (He came in in relief and played well. After a few more games, I bet he`s more comfortable out there.), Robert Nilsson (At times he was reckless, but for the most part he was good.), Sam Gagner (The little dude was buzzing out there.  He made some nice plays.) Patrick O`Sullivan (Hard to believe I cursed at him a lot a month ago.  He was pretty decent in this game.)

------------------

JEERS

Ethan Moreau - TRADE HIM NOW!!! He blew the teams momentum again this game.  He sucks and needs to go. Booooooo!!!

Souray/Gilbert - Wow! Souray was the worst tonight. He was standing there like a deer in headlights all night.  Gilbert sucked too, but not near as bad as Souray.  -4 for Souray and -3 for Gilbert.  Not a good night for these two. Booooooo!

Jeff Deslauriers - He was burned on some tough goals and some weak ones that should be stopped.  He even flubbed up a pass to Gilbert which resulted in a goal for Nashville.  Ugh! What a bad game for JDD. Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): None

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - That sucked bad.  My goat, Ethan Moreau, blew the momentum with a Bad Timing Penalty and that was the game. Sure the Oilers might not have made the comeback, but how are we going to find out?  As of right now, the Oilers only have one win in the last 13 games. Yay team!

Paq Twinn - I was stuck between wanting to laugh and cry for most of this game. It was amazing how little of an effect the two day mini-camp seemed to have had. Despite Quinn and companies best efforts, the Oilers looked pretty much exactly the same. The Oilers did out shoot the Preds but were unable to Pekka Rinne until 7:22 of the 3rd. However, after that goal the Oilers played much better. They started to skate just a little bit harder, and as a result, started to control the play more then they did in the first 47 mins. Had they started to play this way earlier, like say in the 1st or even the2nd, they might have won this game. Pens had a pretty good game and was double shifted most of the night. He scored a PP goal late in the 3rd. JFJ played well, Cogs continued to play with an edge, and Doobie played very well in relief of JDD. Game Grade: D+

Reason's for Optimism / Reason's to Cheer

As our collective playoff hopes fade faster then a January sunset, I just wanted to remind people, that the Oilers do have most of the pieces in place for a solid team. Not all is doom and gloom. There's always a bright side to any situation and here's the Oilers silver lining.

The Forwards

The obvious guys are Hemsky, Penner, Horcoff. Yes, Horc makes too much money for his output, but the fact remains, he can be a big part of a winning team. With the emergence of Pens this year, we finally have a big power forward that we have been looking for since we traded Messier and no I don't think they are the same player, other then the power forward part. And then there's Hemsky, that's self explanatory, the guy has mad skills.

The kids that I like on this team are as follows; Gagner, Brule, Stone, Potulny and Stortini. These guys are keepers for sure. Even though they have had "off" games this year, none have been disappointing. In fact I, like most of you, was pleasantly surprised by the play of Stoney, Potsy and Bru, I just didn't see them playing this well for us. I'm not sure guys like Nilsson, Cogliano or J.F.Jacques will be around next season as they could be included in deals during the off season, although the Oilers do need JFJ's size and willingness to hit. And don't forget that guys like Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, who lit up the WJHC over the last couple weeks, are on their way next year too.

The Defence

Of our top six D-men I would only keep three. The guys I would keep to build around are; Visnovsky, Gilbert and Smid. Yes, I would trade Souray. I love the guy as much as anyone, but if this rebuild is going to be done properly, one of Souray or Visnovsky has to be moved. I choose Souray because he is older (by a month) and I think Lubo brings more to this team besides a booming slapshot, it's like choosing between Coffey and MacInnis in my books. Smid is turning into a great defender and Gilbert is still figuring this league out and not playing too badly doing so. Grebeshkov can bring a return in a trade and Staios or Strudwick have to go, as we only need one 7th D-man. With guys like Taylor Chorney, Theo Peckham, Alex Plante and Jeff Petry coming up, we need to make room on the back end.

The Goalies

I, like most in the hockey world, have no idea what is wrong with Khabibulin's back. What I do know is that Deslauriers has some very respectable numbers after 24 starts this season. His save % is basically on par with Khabbi's and his goals against average is better. JDD is getting some extremely valuable playing time with Khabbi out. I don't know enough about Dubnyk to make any assumptions on how he is doing. He has seen some action, but only after sitting on the bench for weeks on end.  So he has been rusty, so to speak, when he has gotten into a game. He does have a short memory though, as he was able to shake off some poor outings for the Oilers and Falcons during the last couple months. The Oilers have to keep JDD in my mind and try to trade or find some kind of loop hole in the CBA to lose Khabbi's salary from the cap hit, before deciding to trade DD.

Final Thoughts

So as you can see here, there are quite a few reasons to remain optimistic about this team. Sure rebuilds take some time, but the Oilers have many of the right pieces already in place. All they need is a season or two of premium draft picks and its off to the races in Oil Country. So as you sit and watch your Oilers lose more often then not for the rest of this season, cheer the little battles being won and the progression of the younger guys as they will carry the load in the next few years, along with *fingers crossed*, *knock on wood* Taylor Hall.

Shameless Plugs - The Oilogosphere

Since we have all heard what Sheldon Souray said, my depression level just went down a notch.  That's right folks, I'm not the same guy I was in the early part of December - you know... Mr. WeCanDoIt. Right now, as an Oiler fan, it can't get much worse.  I personally like to see the team make the playoffs no matter what, but I'm getting used to the idea that they are crappy and are most likely getting a top three pick.  So instead of speculating and talking about how bad the team is, I figured it was best to share the good things about this team. We (the fans) have a great community to relay our thoughts, opinions and stories. It's called the Oilogosphere and here are my favorite reads.

OilersNation is one of the first places I found when looking for Oiler sites.  I loved the writing there and it really inspired me to start up Oilers Jambalaya.  Robin Brownlee is my favorite writer period.  He's a great read and is always entertaining.  And if you say something stupid, he'll tell you it was stupid.  Gotta love the honesty there.  Jason Gregor, Jonathan Willis, Bingofuel, Amber McCormick and the man behind it all, Wanye Gretz are the other writers there.  Not to forget the Minister Towel Boy and his pool updates - which I am bombing in by the way.  It's a great site and usually my first stop when I turn on the computer.

Cult of Hockey - EdmontonJournal.com is another great place to go.  David Staples is the main man there and I always enjoy what he writes.  He's a smart guy who gets to the bottom of things and has a great insight into what is going on around the Edmonton Oilers hockey club.  From time to time, I contribute to the player grades for David and it's always a pleasure to do them.  So go there and learn a little, I do.

For obvious reasons, I'm going to list EdmontonOilers.com in this list.  This is the official website for the Oilers.  It's always great content.

Now, Jay from LowOnOil.com is a good example of the way things should be more often in life.  I guess in some places, having 25 of the same blogs would lead to competition, and I'm sure there is lots of it happening all over the world.  But not around here.  The Oilogosphere guys are friendly.  Not long ago, Jay informed us about the Cover It Live application that we have been using in our LIVE TweetCasts (awesome application).  We probably never would have found it if it wasn't for Jay. Thanks again Jay.  Jay is the main guy there and he writes some fantastic stuff there and always has a game day pregame report.  Low on Oil is a good stop so go there.

Lowetide is the site that everyone wants to be like.  He gets 30+ comments every time he posts.  He could write one sentence. Boom! 30 comments.  He's insightful and carries a great conversation.  I may not comment there much, but I read it everyday.

If you don't mind being offended once in a while, you need to go see JeanShortsandBaggedMilk.  Two crazy dudes that can make you laugh and cry all in one read.  These two have been cool to me since day one and it's always nice to have a couple of nut jobs to roll with you into a knife fight.  They may not fight well, but they sure are funny.  Again... a daily read.

After every Oiler game, you should check out mc79hockey.  I love the scoring chances sheet that Tyler Dellow & Co does. I find it very telling on how each player/line worked.  It's a definite must read. I love it so much, a link for each game is added to every Beers & Jeers Oilers Recap we do.

Anthony Ta has been a friend to us for a long time.  We love his writing and he is guy everyone should read.  He writes at An Oilers Refinery, The Bleacher Report, and the first place he started, Strange Deadfellows.  He's always a must read and a heck of a nice guy.  Be sure to say hi from us.

The guys from Putting On The Foil also have a great site.  They have great views on the Oilers hockey club.  I especially love their MS Paint work.  Racki and the guys have this way of arguing without arguing. It's great stuff. I recommend you go here.  They stay on top of the current news.

The Copper & Blue site which was the brain child of Jonathan Willis, is a constant changing site.  They have some really good writers who keep the content flowing.  With JW off doing the Score's Hockey or Die! and OilersNation, he's enlisted Derek Zona, Benjamin Massey, Bruce McCurdy and Scott Reynolds and they are top notch guys and their writing speaks for itself.  This is more than a daily site, it's as current as they come.

Here are other great sites I read daily.

BEERS

Fernando Pisani - He scores his first goal of the season and played pretty good.  He was the best Oiler and lead by example which is refreshing for the Oilers.  Good job Fernie.  Have a frosty beer. You deserve it. Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Devan Dubnyk (He played well but the other guys didn't. I felt bad for him.), Sam Gagner (He sucked in the first half of the game and then turned it on in the last half. He needs to play a full 60 minute game. He did score and was 60% on faceoffs.), Sheldon Souray (He was OK and fired a lot of shots.  He took 12 shots but only 3 hit the net. He also led the team with 3 giveaways.), Tom Gilbert (He quietly had a good game. Not much to complain about here but nothing to write home about either.)

------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - Horcoff, Staios, Moreau and Smid (only by association with Staios) were the worst guys. But the whole team sucks right now and it's not fun to watch.  As the Menacer said tonight... the Oilers are taking their licks for picks. Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): The Entire Team (That's right... you sucked that bad.)

*Steve walks warily down the street with the brim pulled way down low
Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet, machine gun's ready to go
Are you ready? Hey, are you ready for this?
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat?
Out of the doorway the bullets rip to the sound of the beat, Yeah

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone
And another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

How do you think I'm gonna get along without you when you're gone?
You took me for everything that I had and kicked me out on my own
Are you happy? Are you satisfied?
How long can you stand the heat?
Out of the doorway the bullets rip to the sound of the beat (Look out)

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone
And another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, I'm gonna get you too

BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - Go figure.

------------------

BEERS

Patrick O'Sullivan - He played a real good game.  His legs were moving and he had a nice breakaway goal that I'm sure will be a highlight for month.  The guy has skill.  No doubt.  But what about the heart?  He had a goal and an assist for 2 point and was a +1.  He also had 5 shots on net.  So for tonight's game, have a frosty cold beer. Cheers!

Sam Gagner - I was glad Quinn switched up the lines and put Gagner with Stone and Pisani.  Both guy are more responsible than Gagner is and it showed.  Gagner played loose and carefree and you know what?  He was good.  He had 7 shots and picked up an assist on the Grebeshkov goal.  One of the better games he's played in a long time.  Good job little dude.  Bud? Cheers!

Gilbert Brule - I really like the way he has been playing lately.  Lots of "jam" and he's consistently trying to make a play.  Gotta love the effort.  I wish more Oilers had it.  He had 4 shots, 2 hits and 2 takeaways.  Oh, and he scored the Oilers opening goal.  For a solid effort, how about a cold Albino Rhino Dark Ale? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Steve Staios (I was impressed by his game. He played a simple game and didn't look as slow tonight.  He even finished +1.), Ladislav Smid (He's turned into a good defensive guy. 3 hits and 3 blocked shots, not too bad Ladi.), Denis Grebeshkov (Even though he's been a train wreck lately, he did find a way to score a goal and add an assist.  But he still finds a way to be -1.),

------------------

JEERS

The 4th Line of (Moreau, Cogliano and Stortini) - Ugh!  What a terrible line.  Sadly, I feel bad for all three of them.  These three just don't mesh and I don't know why the coaching staff keeps going with these guys.  It's just plain ugly when they are on.  Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Dustin Penner (For the sake of being -2, you are in the jeers.  He played pretty good reunited with Horcoff, but was burned far to often.), Robert Nilsson (Same goes for Nilsson.  He was OK, but couldn't keep the puck out of the net and also was a -2.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - That was a meed up night. Cheering my ass of for Team Canada and paying $$$ for the Oilers PPV.  I was honestly entertained by both games - I had the junior game on the computer beside the TV and the Oiler game - but the Junior game was tops.  Entertaining as hell and it had me gripped to my couch.  My mother in law calls during the game and starts bitching about how hockey is stupid - the USA team was up 4-2 at that time - and that it's not fun to watch. WHAT?!? Sure they were losing but it was a good game. BOOM! Eberle scores! and she gets a little excited. By the time she hung up Eberle scores again. WOoOOoOOoo!  Talk about a clutch goal guy. Unbelievable. It's tied up and it's going to overtime.

Then the let down. *sigh* The Canadians played well and it sucks to lose that way. But come on, you had to see it coming. The Americans already played the Canadians to a shootout loss and were not going to lose this time.  Those USA kids are really good and really played as a team.  And I'll tell you, Junior games are way faster than NHL games.  Those kids can fly.

As far as the Oilers game, it was much like the Junior game as it was a back and forth, come from behind and get it to overtime game.  The guys in the beers impressed me while really only the 4th line stunk in my eyes.  I liked the top 3 lines but would still like Brule on the 1st line with Penner.  Nilsson is not Hemsky.  I wish Quinn would stop believing he is.

The Glass Half Full - Edmonton Oilers Prospects and the Junior Tournament

Well now that the World Junior tournament is almost over - minus the medal finals and the relegation games - it's time to look at what happened for the sake of the Edmonton Oilers and their prospects.  Not much is really going to change from now till it's over so why not get cracking?

In my opinion, the Oiler kids did great.  Much better than I had anticipated.  I'm thinking glass half full when I say the future looks bright for this hockey club.  Not next year, but I'd say in the next 2-4 years, this team is going to change dramatically and for the better. *fingers crossed*

We seen the dominance/emergence of (F) Jordan Eberle and (F) Magnus Pääjärvi-Svensson and that really excited me as an Oiler fan, never mind the other 3 Oiler kids playing in this tournament.

Before any games are played on Monday, Eberle had registered a point in 16 straight games for Team Canada.  He is also tied for tops on Team Canada with St. Louis Blues prospect (D) Alex Pietrangelo and second in the tournament in points with 11 in total.  In fact, only Derek Stepan has more points in the tournament than Eberle and it's only by one mealy point.  Jordan Eberle has 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points.  Not bad for a kid who only played 5 games and was slated for the 2nd line on Team Canada.

"He's (Eberle) not afraid of the big situation," Coach Desjardins said. "He wants the puck. Even the shootout moves and things like that, he makes real strong moves."  Watch out Oiler fans, this kid is going to be a damn good player someday for the Oilers.

Magnus Pääjärvi-Svensson has also had a great tournament.  He's been a force and a leader on the Swedish team and he's a very talented hockey player.  I still find it surprising that the Oilers were able to select him with the 10th pick in 2009.  This kid is a gamer and I feel fortunate as an Oiler fan that we have him in our system.  He had 3 goals and 6 assists for 9 points in 5 games and was a +6.  He was a leader for the Sweden team and I'd expect some of the same here in Edmonton when he does finally reach the NHL.  As an 18 year old, he's very impressive and I'm sure, like Eberle and his #14, the Oilers have #21 reserved for Pääjärvi-Svensson.

Also on Team Sweden, is (F) Anton Lander.  He was the Oilers 40th pick in 2009 draft.  He was interesting to keep an eye on because I didn't know much about him before the tournament started.  The first thing I noticed as that he must have some sort of leadership skills as he wore the "A" on his jersey.  That's a good sign.  He is also pretty good at faceoffs as he went 35W 25L for 58.33% and 13th overall in the tournament.  Not exactly a high percentage, but at least it's a starting point and has room to grow.  If he improves on this, then that might be an intangible that he brings to the Oilers and solidifies a spot for himself on the team.  Lord knows the Oilers need better faceoff people.

After 5 games Lander has scored 4 goals and had 2 assists for 6 points.  Not bad.  He is also sitting at +3 before the Bronze (I wish it was for Gold) medal game.  Again, not bad.

So far it's looking good for the Oilers don't you think?

Now onto Team Finland.  The Oilers have two players there and they also looked pretty good throughout this tournament.  (F) Tony Rajala and (F) Teemu Hartikainen play on a weaker team than the other Oiler prospects, do but both still had a good tournament.

Rajala scored 1 goal and had 2 assists for 3 points after 5 games.  He is currently sitting at -1 after those 5 games.  Only scoring once is a little shocking considering it came on the PP and he fired 22 shots in those 5 games.  Is he another Patrick O'Sullivan?  See... that doesn't excite me either.  The bright side here?  He didn't have a single penalty all tournament. Glass half full.

Teemu Hartikainen was a little better than Rajala by scoring 3 goals (same as MPS) and 1 assist for 4 points after 5 games.  He also fired the puck a lot like Rajala did by blasting a team high 27 shots. In comparison, Eberle took 20 shots so far in the tournament and has 6 goals while MPS took 24 shots and had 3 goals.  If anything impressed me it was that Hartikainen did so well in goal scoring department.  I didn't expect him to be in top 20 and he is at 16th place right now.  He just may mature into a better goal scorer then he is now. I'd say Hartikainen is already on his way.

Overall Goals as of the morning of 1/4/10
1st Jordon Eberle (6 goals)
3rd Taylor Hall (5 goals)
9th Anton Lander (4 goals)
16th Teemu Hartikainen (3 goals)
16th Magnus Pääjärvi-Svensson (3 goals)
HM Tony Rajala (1 goal)

With the emergence of Eberle and Pääjärvi-Svensson and Lander, I think the Oilers are going to be OK down the road.  I suppose if the two kids from Finland pan out, we can consider it a bonus.  If we show patience, this team will be good once again.  Until then though... it's painful to watch.

Ps. Taylor Hall looked great and needs to be an Oiler.  Don't you think?

Dear OJ - We Answer Your Questions

Lately our in boxes at Oilers Jambalaya have filled up with questions and we have decided to try and answer them to the best of our abilities. HINT: There is none.

----------------

"Dear OJ, I love my wife and she's a really good person. The problem I have with her is that she is a Flames fan.  I didn't know this before we were married as we met in Vegas.  Lately it's hard to look at her.  What can I do?"

Rick in Edmonton

Geez, tough one Rick.  Have you considered divorce?  Or conversion for you, but divorce is easier, and less embarrassing in front of your Oiler friends.  GOILERS!

-Smokin' Ray-

-------------------

"Dear OJ, My wife wants to get a new bed in the spring rather than renew my Oilers seasons tickets.  How do I convince her that the tickets are the best choice?"

Mark in Red Deer

Well Mark, you need to look at the two options and weigh out the good and bad stuff.  We all know what happens in a bed when you not sleeping. *wink*  But then again, we know this Oilers squad and they are not very good right now and may not be next year either. So I guess, either way your going to get screwed.  So unless you have a bad back, you don't really NEED a new bed right?  Just make sure to choose wisely. *cough* tickets *cough*

-Smokin' Ray-

-----------------

How many goals can an Oiler player score, if an Oiler player could score goals?

Evan in St. Albert

By the logic that we are rolling with here... I don't know.  Not many?

-Smokin' Ray-

-----------------

Well now that people know that we are not Dear Abby, maybe the questions will slow down a little. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this isn't very sound advice.  Regardless, my email is smokinrayburntATyahooDOTcom if you have any questions.

*This was another sad attempt at humor by Oilers Jambalaya. Don't take our advice. We suck at giving it.*

BEERS

Sam Gagner - The little dude was pretty good.  Him and Nilsson were the two best Oilers and just couldn't carry the team to a win.  Well, you line only scoring once doesn't help.  Gagner had some magic on the Nilsson goal and he did a decent job at both ends of the ice.  How about a cold Bud? Cheers!

Robert Nilsson - He scores the Oilers only goal and was pretty fun to watch.  He made some fantastic plays/moves and he would blow my mind.  The next minute he loses it at the blueline.  Nilsson was the only Oiler to be a + at the end of the night with a +1.  Not bad Bobby... not bad. Feel like a frosty Bow Valley Brown Ale? It's recommended by the Brew Scout with a 9 out of 10. Cheers!

Tom Gilbert Gilbert is a strange fellow.  On one hand he didn't look good out there playing with a crappy Souray, but on the other he did things he hasn't done all year.  While playing a decent game, he light's a fire under his own ass and hits guys. Actual hits. And 5 of them. Not only that but also had 3 shots and he blocked 6 shots. This is a huge game for Gilbert in those departments.  Sure he finished -2 like his partner, but it's all the other elements that he added to his game that will make him better.  Good on you Gilbert. How about a Heineken in a glass? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Gilbert Brule (He had a whopping 8 hits and was buzzing around. Could he be better not playing with Horcoff and Jacques? I'd think so.),

------------------

JEERS

Jeff Deslauriers - He had a stinker of a night - the first three goals against were low and soft - but he did something most Oiler leaders don't.  He admitted he stunk.  He didn't pussy foot around things, he just came out and said it. He said, "I'm not happy about the way I handled the puck, or was able to control very much tonight. I can't play like this right now."  Honesty is the key to getting better. I would have to believe he IS better next game.  But for a terrible game tonight... Booooooo!

Sheldon Souray - This guy looked bad, yet Quinn gave him a lot of ice time.  He was a -2 and he played more than 24 minutes.  For Souray to be effective, he needs to play tough and shoot more than the 1 shot he had this game.  Not s stellar night for Big Sexy. Booooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Dustin Penner (He was on the best Oiler line, yet he was not good.  He had a team worst 3 giveaways. What happened to the old Penner from last month?) The 3rd Line (Not very effective), The 4th Line (Also not very effective yet Quinn insists on playing these guys in the last half of the 3rd.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - They might have lost, but it was entertaining.  The Oilers tried a lot of different stuff but were still unable to score more than one gaol in a game.  It's a bad streak that these guys are on and it sounds to me like Quinn is losing the faith.  Maybe he'll pressure Tambo to make a move?  This team is in the dumps now. 1 win in the last 10 isn't something to write home about.  The dive for five or the fall for Hall (up to you which one you use) continues. It's definitely is going to get worse before it's better.

Oilers Stiff Calgary Restaurant With Bill?

Wow. In a shocking revelation by Calgary's CTV News, the Edmonton Oilers hockey players and their wives/girlfriends were dining at Osteria De Medici, a pretty nice joint in the Kensington area of Calgary after the new years game against the Flames.  It appears that the Oilers upon receiving their bill, looked at it, and declined to pay it.  The Captain Ethan Moreau was one of the players that refused that bill.

Apparently, it was close to an $18,000 bill and the Oilers figured it was too much.  The restaurant reportedly charged them by the shot and the Oilers wanted it by the bottle.  If you have ever been to a bar, you know that the shots add up quickly.  This liquor bill was around $8,000.  But nonetheless, the Oilers should have shut up and paid it.  No questions asked.

It's reported that the restaurant was going to call the police and the players ended up paying $12,000 and figured it out to be square.  Maurizio Terrigno, the owner of the restaurant begs to differ, he still wanted the close to $18,000 bill paid.  He also said that someone from the Edmonton Oilers organization contacted the restaurant this afternoon and worked out a deal for the rest of the tab.  He says that he is going to donate the money to charity.

What the hell are these guys thinking?  Your in Calgary, your the Edmonton Oilers, and you know, the most hated team in Calgary, and you don't want to pay a bill when you make millions of dollars?  Is this really the smartest/best idea?  In other words, take your lumps and call it a lesson learned.

So we, the fans, can't even start off the new year without an Oiler embarrassment? (True or false, right or wrong, it's just more negative news the Oilers don't need.) Thanks guys. *face in palm* Happy New Years to you too.  2010 starts off great.

EDIT (7:00pm):  Here is Dan Tencer's Take on this story:

The owner of a Calgary restaurant is trying to use the Edmonton Oilers as a publicity tool.

After last night's game in Calgary, the entire Oilers team went out for a pre-planned meal with their wives and girlfriends at the upscale, downtown eatery Osteria De Medici.

At the end of the night the players were presented with a bill for close to $19,000, a figure that struck them as being grossly inflated for what they consumed over their roughly 90 minute stay. The players, while still waiting at the restaurant, asked for the bill to be re-calculated at which point they were presented with a revised cheque for $12,381. The team paid for the bill with a credit card, and left.

The owner of the restaurant called Calgary media this morning, claiming that the players refused to pay the bill until they were threatened with a phone call to the police. Oilers officials call the story "ridiculous".(dt/tc)

EDIT (8:30pm):  Here is the TSN version of the story.

EDIT (9:00pm): Here is the Calgary Herald Version.

EDIT (5:30pm 1/3/10): Now that the storm has blown over it appears that everything has been worked out for both parties.  The Oilers say no harm was done and the restaurant owner says it's OK.  It's over.  Osteria de Medici owner Maurizio Terrigno said Saturday, "I’m happy to report the situation’s been resolved"

So did I jump the gun and spit out an opinion a little too quick?  Perhaps.  But then again, I shoot from the hip and I always have something to say.  So like many suggested, this is over and should fade away now.
