BEERS & JEERS PLAYER GRADES

The Cult of Hockey Grading System:
10 perfect game,  9 extraordinary,  8 great,  7 good,  6 above average,
5 average,  4 below average,  3 poor,  2 terrible,  1 deserves to be in minors.

#2 JAMES VANDERMEER - (4) Slow, outplayed, giveaways, 2 penalties. Do I have to say much more? His boarding call was not a great call. Last minute the check turned his back.

#4 TAYLOR HALL - (4) He had moments where he looked like a million bucks. But for the most part average, or below. 3 shots, 2 hits and 2 giveaways.

#5 LADISLAV SMID - (0) DNP (Injured)

#6 RYAN WHITNEY - (4) He finished -2 and played 25:15. He had 2 hits and 2 blocked shots. He made a lot of stupid errors. Not sure if it's because he's bummed out with the team or if he's being played too much, but he wasn't very good tonight.

#10 SHAWN HORCOFF - (3) JEERS He can't be 100% healthy. He's not like he was before he was hurt. But he is the leader of this team and all three of the leaders need to do something. 38% on faceoffs is not the typical Horcoff. He was benched in the later parts of the game and only played 10:44. He was -2.

#13 ANDREW COGLIANO - (6) I thought we was OK. He was 8/5 for 62% on faceoffs and played great with Eberle and Paajarvi in the 3rd. I bet that's a new line for the next game. Good all around playing for Cogs. He finished -1 and played 19:05. He's been better since he was popped in the mouth.

#14 JORDAN EBERLE - (4) A decent game but not really. He was on for the 1st goal, the 3rd goal and the 5th goal. It wasn't till he was placed on a line with Paajarvi and Cogliano did he get playing with some fire in his belly. He had some chances t shoot and he didn't. Wrong choice. Shot as often as you can. Screw the pass, you Jordan "Clutch" Eberle.

#16 COLIN FRASER - (6) He played well. He was out for the 2nd Toews goal and that was it for goals against. He was 58% on faceoffs and he had some good shifts with Jacques and Jones. His +/- was even.

#22 JF JACQUES - (6) First game back as an Oiler and he did OK. No complaints about him tonight. He was credited with only 2 hits and I think that's false. He hit way more than that. He played 11:53 and looks like he will be able to contribute.

#26 KURTIS FOSTER - (5) I thought that he stepped his game up tonight. He made some good hits/pushovers (team high with 4 hits) and was trying to get some good shots off. I liked that he was paired with Belle. Good fit IMO. He was -2 and played 17:54

#27 DUSTIN PENNER - (4) Another so so game for Penner. He just couldn't find his groove. He had 1 shot, 1 giveaway and 1 takeaway.

#28 RYAN JONES - (5) He only plays 12:01 and does alright. He was even at night's end and while it looked like he was productive out there, he didn't really register a stat.

#33 STEVE MACINTYRE - (0) DNP (Healthy scratch)

#35 NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN - (3) JEERS Brutal. He let in 4 goals against and is tearing it up on the hockey pool side of things. Oh, meant tearing it down. He was credited with 2 giveaways and was pulled after two periods of play.

#40 DEVAN DUBNYK - (6) I LOVE HIS RANFORD MASK!!! He came in to start the 3rd and was scored on early to make it 5-0. After that, he fell into a zone and played well. He really does need to get more starts. He faced 16 shots in the 3rd period.

#43 JASON STRUDWICK - (0) DNP (scratch)

#45 SHAWN BELLE - (5) I thought he was OK. According to the stat sheet he was a team worst, 3 giveaways. I didn't see 3. He has great speed and can make a nice outlet pass. I hope he gets to stick around. Rather much watch Belle learn the NHL than see Strudwick or Vandermeer play.

#46 ZACK STORTINI - (0) DNP (scratch)

#49 THEO PECKHAM - (5) He wasn't reckless and out of control tonight. He was -1 and played 18:37. He was only credited with 1 hit and that's a crock. He was pretty physical out there. He played hard.

#67 GILBERT BRULE - (3) JEERS Brule was falling on the ice all over the place. He would try and make a play and fall. Make a pass, fall. It was crazy. I thought for awhile it was just his skates. Nope. He was just sucking. He had 1 hit and that's it. He only played 10:13.

#77 TOM GILBERT - (3) JEERS He is terrible. Every chance he gets... giveaway. I can't take it. Horcoff and Hemsky were benched, why not Gilbert?

#83 ALES HEMSKY - (4) I didn't really think he was all that bad. He made some nice moves and had very little help with putting it in the net. Hemsky needs a consistent line mate. He needs comfort. Renney is switching the lines faster than the MacBlender. It's not like Hemsky's not trying, it's the guys around that suck.

#89 SAM GAGNER - (4) He has a chance to lead a young team to something better (playoffs) and he's failing. After his hot start to the year, he's been average at best. Tonight was an average night. He's just not standing out right now.  He has improved on faceoffs this year though and was 9/5 for 64% tonight.

#91 MAGNUS PAAJARVI - (5) He was on that good line in the 3rd but he needs to find a way to make an impact without depending on his partners. I'm curious to see if Renney tried the 91/13/14 line next game. He played 17:05 and had 2 shots and a blocked shot.

OKC Barons Practice for Nov 17th

Oilers Add Some Meat In Jacques and Belle

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled JF Jacques and Shawn Belle from the Oklahoma City Barons.

Jacques, we all knew was going to happen (conditioning stint).

I guess for the most part, we did as well with Belle. I have been pumping his tires for weeks. Out of all the defencemen in OKC, Belle was the standout. Big, mean and can make a nice pass. Shawn Belle leads all AHL defensemen in assists (13) and points (15). All in the last 17 games.

Let's hope these guys can help this team be better. *fingers crossed*

ON A SIDE NOTE: Peckham is skating today so I don't see another defenceman being recalled at this time. The debate over Plante or Petry will continue.

IMO, the ranking of the Barons defence is as follows; Belle, Petry, Plante, Petiot, Chorney & Motin. I have talked to a few of the Barons insiders, and they say I'm not wrong with the ranking.

JF Jacques Headed Back to Edmonton; Any Barons?

Jason Gregor today, posted on Twitter that JFJ would be recalled to Edmonton on Tuesday. With the reports today that Smid is out with a concussion and that Peckham has a wrist injury from last night's game, it'll be interesting to see if any of the Barons D-men are on the flight with him. Richard Petiot is out right now with a lower body injury. He returned to practice today, but didn't take part in any drills, he just skated around. So that leaves the three big choices right now as Shawn Belle, Jeff Petry, and Alex Plante.

The number one choice is Belle. He'll be the first D-man called up hands down. His 15 points and his physical presence have been huge so far for the Barons. Petry has been alright, but he's been making quite a few little mistakes that have led to scoring chances, hence his -11 rating. He's also not a "physical force" weighing in at 200 lbs. compared to Belle's 232 and Plante's 225. Petry and Belle have been playing as the 1st D-pair as well, for anyone that didn't know. Plante has been really stepping it up lately. In Friday's game against Chicago, he had one big play where he guarded the right post for Gerber. He withstood a couple of Chicago forwards by blocking shots and hitting sticks to allow Gerber to get his glove on the puck.

In my eyes, Petry and Belle are somewhat along the same lines of defensemen. They both can defend well, but they like to cheat up more on the offense; Petry more than Belle. Plante is just a defenseman, and a good one at that. If the Oilers make any calls tonight, I'd say that Belle goes up, and if the Oilers want a second D-man, Plante gets the call. If the Oilers to call up Belle and Plante to fly up with JFJ, it'll definitely give the Oilers the physical players they need.

So that brings up the question of who the Barons will bring in to fill those spots. With Petiot injured, they're playing with 6 d-men right now. Bendfeld is probably the obvious choice, having been with the team on two occasions but not playing in a game with the Barons this season. In 5 games with the Thunder, he has no points, but has a +4 rating. He served a 2 game suspension earlier this month for an illegal hit to the head during their Nov 7th game. For the other defender, they have a couple options. Justin DaCosta, who was in training camp with the Barons, has been doing well with the Allen Americans this season. He's scored 3 goals and has 8 assists so far with a +3, putting him tied for 4th in the Central Hockey League in points among defensemen. Another choice is Anthony Aiello, who was also with the team in training camp. He was sent down to the Stockton Thunder at the beginning of the season where he has 1 goal and 7 assists so far this season with a +5 rating. (You can read Scott's article on this here)

We'll have to see how it all shakes out. The Oilers play Wednesday night against the Blackhawks, and the Barons next game is Friday against the Texas Stars.
