(Edmonton Journal) Cult of Hockey Player Grades - Oilers vs Sharks (11-27-09)

Once again David Staples of the Edmonton Journal's Cult of Hockey has allowed me to do the player grades for this game.  You can read it here at Oilers Jambalaya or you can read it HERE

The Cult of Hockey Grading System: 10-perfect game, 9 extraordinary, 8 great, 7 good, 6 above average, 5 average, 4 below average, 3 poor, 2 terrible, 1 deserves to be in minors.

#27 Dustin Penner (7) - He was a quiet guy in the first half of the game and then all of a sudden, he wakes up.  Once he got his legs going he played well like he has all year.  He is going to have to continue his strong play if the Oilers want to be competitive for the rest of the season.  Luckily for Oiler fans, he showed it in the last half of the game and the Oilers had a great end to the game.  He had a goal and a assist that was some nice play making with Brule.  He also went 8W-5L=62% on the faceoffs.  Good night for Penner.

#89 Sam Gagner (6) - He was the 3rd wheel on this 1st line.  He created chances and plays but he wasn't the game breaker.  Early in the game he drew the Oilers first power play by using his hustle.  And later on he picked up an assist on the Brule goal and had a decent night on faceoffs with 53%.  With Hemsky out, I can see him stepping up.

#10 Shawn Horcoff (4) - He did what he could with a bum shoulder.  I like his willingness to bust his hump and do any type of duties that Quinn throws at him.  But he ended up -3 and was bad on faceoffs at 44%. He either needs to stop playing and rest his shoulder or tell Quinn that you can not take any more faceoffs.  He grimaces in pain every time he takes a draw.   I understand that the team is in trouble with man power right now, but he isn't helping the team by playing.

#13 Andrew Cogliano (6) - Speedy Gonzales was ripping around tonight.  Maybe he had something to prove to Heatley?  Maybe not.  He only had two shots but he created a lot of space out there for the others to go to.  He was a +2 and seems to be playing with confidence.  He really hustled and out worked the sharks all night.  He seems to be responding to the coaching staff as of late and it's showing.

#19 Patrick O'Sullivan (4) - He really needs to step up and get serious about hockey.  At points during the game he seemed timid and was almost scared to do anything.  I don't know what to think of him anymore.  He led the team in shots with six, but most of those were not even good shots.  He just seems to be in a funk.  And the funk stinks.

#67 Gilbert Brule (8) - Mr. Brule gets Hemsky's spot on the 1st line with Gagner and Penner and steps right in like he's always been there.  In fact he may have looked better than Hemsky has with those two.  Brule said that he likes to play with Penner because he knows how to find him.  He's right.  He scores tonight on an assist from Penner.  They had a few good chances.  Not only did Brule score a goal and pick up an assist, he also had three blocked shots.  If he wasn't on the ice for the Sharks last goal I probably would have gave him a 9.  He was that good.

#18 Ethan Moreau (6) - He wasn't bad at all.  Since the talk with the leadership group he's been pretty good.  He has more jump in his step.  He had three shots and picked up a helper on the Potulny goal in the 3rd period.  He made a great deke play in the 2nd that had me rechecking his number because the guy actually had hands.  But he shot the puck wide and that was it for his big moment of the game.  His biggest change in his play has been that he is trying to play hockey now, not just trying to be a thug on skates.

#22 JF Jacques (6) - The guy was a wrecking ball.  He hit everyone including Dany Heatley.  He didn't have the puck much but when he did he handled it appropriately. He had a good fight at the start of the game and he won it pretty clearly.  He didn't make a whole lot of mistakes but it seems all he knows how to do is hit people.  That's cool, but it will only get you so far.

#16 Ryan Potulny (8) - With the departure to Reddox back down to the minors it only meant that Potulny was not only going to be staying long term with the Oilers, but he's going to get a chance to succeed.  Reddox just doesn't have the overall game that Potulny has.  Tonight he was awesome.  A big time player who busted his hump and made good things happen.  He didn't wait for chances to come to him... he made them.  He had two goals and was a +2.  Seems like an 8 to me.

#46 Zack Stortini (5) - He only played 5:33 but still found the time to slam off 5 hits.  He can't be blamed for not playing much as he was playing with the rookies.  I'm saying he was a 5 because he was average tonight. But it's hard to grade a guy when they don't really play.

#42 Ryan O'Marra (5) - He had a nice body check on his first shift and never really made any mistakes when he was out.  But like Stortini, it's hard to grade a guy with limited minutes.  But when he played he was average.

#57 Colin MacDonald (5) - This was his 1st ever NHL game.  He must have been wetting his pants getting ready for this game.  I always like to watch a rookies first game.  You can see the eyes sparkle and a smile or two while they sit on the bench soaking it all in.  He had a good first game and maybe with a practice or two he may get more ice time.

#44 Sheldon Souray (3) - Holy cow!  Souray was a train wreck.  It all started when he went and took a run at Heatley in the first five minutes and pushed him down.  Sweet thing to do (we all love you for it) but he went way out of position and bing, boom!  San Jose goal.  Not so sweet.  After that it was one thing after another.  He took a penalty shortly after the San Jose goal and gives them more life.  He was a major culprit on why this team was so bad in the first half of the game.  He was on the ice for every single Sharks goal along with Staios.  So he ends up a -4 and somehow only takes one shot.  (Well one shot hit the net and three were missed shots. So four in total)  And... he takes a penalty in overtime with a careless high-sticking call.  It was just a bad game for Souray. He will bounce back tomorrow night. *fingers crossed*

#71 Lubomir Visnovsky (5) - He wasn't great, but he wasn't bad.  He always makes good plays and shows off his superior stick handling skills, but tonight he seemed a little off.  His defensive plays were good but he seemed to not be pushing it offensively. It could be that Quinn wanted him to be that way but I doubt it.  I just can't quite put my finger on what's wrong.  He was +2 and had two shots.  He needs to be better than what he did tonight.  He needs to be better than average.

#77 Tom Gilbert (6) - I am going to give a lot of credit to Gilbert.  Quinn has asked him to play tough and he seems to be trying to do that.  Tonight he played tough.  Sort of.  If you look at his face in a scrum, he doesn't look mean at all.  He doesn't even get mad I don't think.  Well, maybe if the newest chick flick is bad he may get upset and spill his popcorn.  But not during a game.  He's too nice.  He was +2 and didn't do much else on the scoresheet, but he didn't let any goals in and that's a job well done.

#24 Steve Staios (3) - He was on for all 4 San Jose goals along with Souray.  That alone is worth a 2.  However he did play average for the most part and made some good (4) shot blocks.  But it just seemed like he was running around and never really played with Souray effectively.  He seemed like he was in over his head and he was drowning quick. Glug!

#5 Ladislav Smid (5) - Smid was ok.  He and Visnovsky need to be more physical to be effective.  He kind of strayed away from it tonight and he was lucky it didn't cost him.  He picked up an assist on the Potulny goal and made a great play to get him the puck.  But he needs to remember that he's at his best when he's making players mad and giving out the old stink glove to worthy faces.

#43 Jason Strudwick (5) - This guy is playing not bad with Gilbert.  He brings that extra little umph that Gilbert lacks.  He played a pretty average game tonight but really, that's a good game for him.  But he did have three giveaways and that is his achilles heal.

#38 Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers (4) - He started out shaky, then he went into good goalie mode where he was looking like he could become a game breaker.  Then the 3rd period went a little south.  It's hard to blame him for all the goals but he needs to work on his high blocker shots and his screening shots.  He needs to find the vision holes better.  He also still needs to work on his puck handling.  Scary stuff when he's holding that puck and a opposition player is coming at him.  But with Khabibulin out for a while, he is going to get some serious playing time.  So get serious because this is you chance. Take it and run.

#40 Devan Dubnyk (N/A) - He didn't play in the actual game at all.  But he probably opened the door with reckless abandon and should be applauded for his efforts. *clap, clap*

B&J #82 Edmonton Oilers Recap vs. Sabres (11/11/09)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? Hemsky draws back in tonight so that means O'Marra is out.  O'Marra is a healthy scratch but, Horcoff, Souray, Nilsson, Chorney, Pouliot and Jacques are injured and will not play tonight.

- The last time (Jan 27/09) the Oilers faced the Sabres, it was a 10-2 victory for the Sabres.  Let's hope that never happens again. Ever.

BEERS

Patrick O'Sullivan - He played hard and tried his ass off.  He seems to like to ring them off the post.  But after what seemed liked a million chances, he finally scores on a nice play by Visnovsky and a nice pass by Hemsky.  He was good enough to deserve a beer.  How about a frosty glass of Pilsner? Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Gilbert Brule (He's getting the total snub right now.  He's the best at faceoffs this game and only plays 11:50.  He had 2 shots and 2 blocked shots plus the 64% faceoffs.  Sounds like a good game to me.), Sam Gagner (He played well again.  He tried his ass off and Quinn kept putting him out there.  The good, he had 3 shots and created chances.  The bad, 18% faceoffs.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He looked way better than yesterday.  He made some good plays and had 2 shots and 2 blocked shots.  His assist was a lucky one that you need to see on the game highlights.), Ales Hemsky (He looked pretty good.  He had flashes of brilliance, but that's all that it was... flashes. He made a nice pass to Sully for the Oilers only goal.), Steve Staios (He was decent two games in a row.  What's going on here? His only black mark was his penalty in the 3rd.), Dustin Penner (I liked his hustle. He had a few chances but had a standout 0% faceoffs. What?)

------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - A 5 minute Power Play and you don't score? What hell guys?  That's like a free all you can eat lunch buffet and you forgot your plate.  I didn't count the chances you guys blew on that, but I'd bet it wasn't that many.  Nice passing, but shoot the puck.  Boooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Ryan Potulny (He looked lost and confused.  He ended up on the -2 line.  Yet he gets more ice time than Brule. Go figure?), Jason Strudwick (His best part of the game was his 5 blocked shots.  Unfortunately, that's all he can do well.  Not a good game by him tonight.)  Ethan Moreau (He takes the BTP and I guess we shouldn't expect less from him.)
-------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - He was not good at all.

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - He's hurt and never played.

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - I was bored for most of the game and I was waiting for some great action to happen. Even after Reddox was nailed there was no emotion.  The team looked flat and was possibly tired. But no matter, the effort could have been better.  Grebeshkov hurt his knee on the collision late in the 3rd and he's flown back to Edmonton for examination.  How many more people are going to get hurt?  Stop the madness hockey gods.  STOP IT!  With some rest and a few practices, I'm sure the Oilers will be a little better on Sunday.  *fingers crossed*  GOILERS!

Paq Twinn - That was a game, it wasn't good, it wasn't bad. I'm starting to get tired of hearing " I hope so and so is going to be ok". MacArthur should be suspended for his cheap hit on Reddox. When are players going to stop running each other. Being sorry afterwards just doesn't cut it anymore. Nice to see Patty-O bury one. The Oilers need more from him. He's been playing well, just limited goal production. I can't wait for Souray to come back, maybe then the PP will be more consistant. Average 1st period, good 2nd, and an average 3rd. Outshot the Sabres but needed more hits. Overall game grade: C-.

B&J #81 Edmonton Oilers Recap vs Ottawa Senators (11/10/09)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Who's Out? Who's in? The revolving door keeps spinning as Robert Nilsson is out tonight.  So the Oilers had to call up Ryan O'Marra for his 1st ever NHL game.  O'Marra was called up because Steve MacIntyre was claimed by the Florida Panthers (the place we claimed him from originally).  Hemsky, Horcoff, Jacques, Chorney, Souray, Pouliot and now Nilsson are all hurt still and will not play tonight.

- Is anyone else sick of hearing about the whole trade with Ottawa that never happened? I sure am. Who cares? It didn't happen and I'm sure those three guys are happy it didn't happen.

- Jeff Deslauriers finally gets his 3rd start of the season.  It's about time.  I've been saying it for a few games now.  Maybe Quinn has been reading the Beers & Jeers and decided I was right? Or maybe it's because there's back to back games and Quinn's a good coach and I'm a crappy writer. Sounds about right.

BEERS

Andrew Cogliano - I really liked his play tonight.  He was buzzing everywhere and generated lots of opportunities when ever he was out.  Maybe just maybe, this was his "see what your missing" type of game to the Sens?  He went 8W-5L for 62% on the faceoff dot.  Where did that come from?  I just thought that overall he had a great game despite no points. Cool, cold Bud Cogs? Cheers!

Steve Staios - What? Does it feel like hell froze over to you too?  Steady Steve was awesome tonight.  I couldn't believe what I was watching.  He picked up 2 assists and was a +3 on the night.  He even had 3 shots on net and 5 blocked shots.  I liked this guy.  He's much better than that other guy that was wearing the #24.  How about a gigantic frosty schooner of Canadian? Cheers!

Ethan Moreau - Yup.  Hell did freeze over.  It pains me to have him in the beers section, but it is what it is.  He was freaking pretty good.  *scratches head*  I just don't get it.  It's funny because Paq Twinn and I were making fun of him this afternoon.  But what the hell do we know?  Chopper had a goal and 5 hits.  He was, as Pierre MacGuire says, a monster.  Beer Bong time! Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Dustin Penner (The big guy scores and plays great again.  Maybe Pens was the one that started the whole hell freezing over thing?), Sam Gagner (He has stepped up since the other guys have been injured.  It's nice to see him improve this season. 50% faceoffs), Liam Reddox (He had 5 shots and 3 hits.  Quinn's new go to guy?), Ryan O'Marra (For his 1st ever NHL game he did pretty good.  Much better than I expected.  He's the 2nd piece in the Ryan Smyth deal. It's kind of ironic that he gets called up to replace Nilsson.), Denis Grebeshkov (He did pretty good.  One of his better games but still scary to watch when he has the puck in the Oilers zone.  He had 1 goal and 3 shots.), Patrick O'Sullivan (he didn't do anything special, he just played well. He had 1 assist.), Gilbert Brule (Great effort to produce his goal.  His game is getting better game by game.)

------------------

JEERS

Lubomir Visnovsky - Holy crap that was a bad game for Lubo.  He was losing the puck all over the place and falling down.  It was such a mess for him.  He even took a nasty face wash which hurt him a bit.  I'm sure he will rebound back and play a solid game tomorrow night.  But for tonight... Booooo!

Jason Strudwick - This guy was 100% pure bad.  He lost the puck at one point and didn't even know it.  He just looked out of place all game.  Let's hope Chorney or Souray come back soon.  Bad night Struds.  Boooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Jeff Deslauriers (He was rusty right from the start and didn't really look good till halfway through the third.  I can't really blame him for sub par play when this was his 3rd game of the year.  You should have seen him handle the puck.  Scary.)

-------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - You read the Beers. *shrugs shoulders* Anyone want to bet he won't do that again tomorrow?

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - He was a scratch.  What's to be mad at?  It's a good thing. :)
-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - I enjoyed this game.  It was fun to watch but I really hate to lose in the shootout.  It just drives me crazy and I don't know why.  It was nice to see O'Marra play his 1st ever game.  He did well.  It was a strange game where we saw Visnovsky poop in the bed, while we had Staios and Moreau rocking it up.  But whatever, it was worth the money.  I'm excited that we play Buffalo tomorrow.  *squee* I can hardly wait. PS: I thought that the stick throwing/swiping incident was total crap for Kovalev to do.  Someone should have smacked him in the mouth.

Paq Twinn - He missed the game.

B&J #80 Edmonton Oilers Recap vs. Avalanche (11/08/09)

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Hemsky, Jacques, Smid, Souray, Horcoff, Pouliot, and Stone are all injured so the Oilers called up Ryan Potulny and Liam Reddox.  Both will play in this game.

- I really am getting concerned with all the games that they have Khabibulin playing in so far.  He's only supposed to play around 55 games and he's on pace for a lot more than that.

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - He was average.  Nothing I could really get mad at.  But seeing a guy like Potulny, it makes me want to get rid of him that much more.

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - He played ok.  He had an assist and probably didn't piss off Quinn much tonight.  But he still sucks.

------------------

GAME STAT LEADERS

Goals - Cogliano, Potulny, Penner, Gilbert, Comrie (1 each)

Most Blocked Shots - Staios (4 blocked shots)
Best Faceoffs - Gagner (12W-7L= 63%)
Worst faceoffs - Brule (2W-6L=25%)

------------------

BEERS

Tom Gilbert - He actually looked like a legit NHL player tonight.  He made very little mistakes and was actually good.  Like real good.  I was shocked.  He scores his 1st of the season and also picks up an assist.  Stellar performance for a guy that has not been good in my eyes this year.  It's about time.  How about a Molson Canadian? Cheers!

Ryan Potulny - For a call up he rocked.  He scores on the PP and picks up an assist.  He was really good.  Maybe it was just the excitement of being called up, but he sure looked ready for the chance.  He's even rockin' a Movember mustache.  Sweet.  Great stuff tonight Potsy.  How about a first ever beer from B&J?  Cheers!

Patrick O'Sullivan - I was glad that he at least picked up an assist.  He's been busting his hump this year and has been snake bitten for the most part.  He took three of shots and really tried to do all the little things right.  He had 3 blocked shots and played an enormous 22:18 of ice time.  It think he's thirsty after that game.  How about a frosty Coors lite?  Cheers!
Sam Gagner - With Horcoff out, Gagner steps in and shows why he is the future of this franchise.  Not only did he pick up an assist, he ran the PP with ease and dominated in the faceoff circle.  Wow!  The guy stands up once again and says "Here I am, take notice".  Great game Gags.  It's Miller Time. Cheers!

Dustin Penner - He just keeps adding to his point totals.  Two more points tonight with a goal and an assist.  Am I surprised anymore? No.  Penner for Team Canada!!!  It's Bud chuggin' time.  Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Zack Stortini (The big guy started the emotion early and played well.), Liam Reddox (Not a bad night for the MacT fart sniffer.  He picks up an assist and had a team high, 4 hits.), Mike Comrie (The Duffman played good.  But like I said at the beginning of the season, he's only good in the first half of a game.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He was good.  He maybe missed Smid out there a little.  He's just such a fast skater it's crazy.), Jason Strudwick (He was physical and played ok. 2 hits and  3 blocked shots), Steve Staios (+1 and an assist.  He does that and 4 blocked shots.  Where's the real Steve?), Andrew Cogliano (He scores a goal and breaths a sigh of releif.  The Oilers need more games like this from him.)

------------------

JEERS

Taylor Chorney - He played ok, but finished the game a team worst -3.  Maybe it was because Quinn has a lot of confidance in him right now and he was out a lot.  But to beat a team 5-3 and still end the game at -3 stinks.  That means you were on the ice for every goal against.  Not a good night in my books.  Booooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Nikolai Khabibulin (He was caught out of his crease a few times.  As good as he's been lately, he wasn't all that hot tonight.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - That was a much better game from the Oilers.  It was their effort level.  They actually had one.  It's about freaking time.  It's kind of sad when you realize that Reddox was the hit leader on this team tonight.  Seriously, what kind of damage could he really do?  Habby (I seen it on his helmet) didn't look great tonight and so it's lucky that the team potted five goals.  But a win is a win and I/we should feel good once again.  GOILERS!

------------------

- Who's Out? Comrie and Visnovsky are to sick to play tonight.  Losing both guys is pretty harsh.  Do you know who else is out? Paq Twinn.  The poor guy has the flu as well.  At the beginning of the game he informed me that he would be missing the TweetCast tonight.  I said "What?" I couldn't let his peeps not be informed.  So as a good friend, I hacked into his Twitter account and did it for him.  Your welcome Paq.  Now you owe me. :)  Get better buddy.

BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - I'm shocked.  Are you?

------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - He was completely invisible.  He played a whopping 12:06.  Even Quinn is figuring out that you suck.

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - The worst of the kid line tonight.  He should have taken the shot a few times, but didn't.  He tried to get cute.  *shakes head* That's not very impressive.

------------------

BEERS

Dustin Penner - The big guy was a force again.  He's so freaking good right now it's scary.  He is a total old school Cam Neely type right now.  He's great.  He had 1 goal and 3 assists tonight.  Why does everyone think I'm crazy for pushing this guy on Team Canada?  Let's get hammered once again Pens.  Cheers!

Shawn Horcoff - Where was this guy all year?  Did he only need Penner to save his season?  Horcoff had 1 goal and 2 assists tonight.  He only had two points going into this game.   Look at me now he says.  Let's drink it up Horc.  Your out of my doghouse tonight.  Frosty?  Cheers!

Ales Hemsky - Hemmer is back.  He was flying out there.  He looked very happy to be with the Horpensky line again.  My only question is why did Quinn wait so long?  Hemmer had 2 goals and 1 assist.  That will add to the points total.  Killer game.  Budweiser?  Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Patrick O'Sullivan (He played his butt off.  He added 1 assist to the game.), Gilbert Brule (He sure is making a point of claiming his spot on this team.  I really like him right now.), JF Jacques (He scores the opening goal and had 3 solid hits.  Good game by Jock Strap.),

------------------

JEERS

Jason Strudwick - He sure can't take the minutes when guys go down.  3 giveaways and was a -3.  What a terrible night for him.  But let's be real, he's really our 7th guy.  Not anything better.  Brutal game Struds... Booooooo!

Nikolai Khabibulin - He was not very good.  Sure he made some nice big saves, but overall pretty stinky.  5 goals against sucks Nik.  Boooooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): The Kid Line (A combined -9.  They looked good but they were schooled a few times in their own end.  Nilsson made this line worse.)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - Good 1st half by the Oilers, then Detroit decided enough was enough.  They storm back and push this game to a shootout.  The Oilers are lucky for the win because it should have been a win anyways.  But a win is a win and that's all that I care about now.  Glad the losing streak is over.  It's a new dawn... it's a new day.

Paq Twinn - *coughs* Sorry folks, *cough* I'm sick, *pukes* Yay Oilers! *passes out*

B&J #75 Edmonton Oilers Recap vs Vancouver Canucks 10/25/09

Welcome to Oilers Jambalaya - An Edmonton Oilers Hockey Blog. Beers & Jeers is a dual collaboration between Smokin' Ray and Paq Twinn. We hope you enjoy our Edmonton Oilers full game recap.

------------------

- Well Brule and JDD get back into the lineup tonight.  Brule has been sick and missed the last 3 games and JDD finally gets a start after Khabibulin lost last night to the fLames.  Still no Mike "Duffman" Comrie.  This must be a bad flu if guys are missing this many games.

- The loss still stings from last nights game.  Don't the Oilers know that we have to go to work on Monday and get ridiculed by fLame fans everywhere?  Three times we lost to them already.  Enough is enough.

- If you guys feel like talking hockey anytime, look us up on Facebook. (Smokin' Ray) (Paq Twinn)  We are always around.

- Luongo is proving to be a hard nut to crack. 2-0 'Nucks with 5:35 remaing in the 3rd
- Oilers getting some good chances.
- Oilers need a goal soon. Understatement 2:30 3rd
- Last min 3rd
- And this one is over. Oilers 0 - Canucks 2
- This was the worst game so far this year. The Oilers had chances, but no sustained pressure unless on a PP and they couldn't beat Luongo
- Thanks for following this LIVE *TweetCast* Next up, Home to face the Avs.
- This team needs some rest. Comrie coming back is good, but we really miss Stoner. He hits and skates hard.

BAD TIMING PENALTY

None - I know... I'm surprised as well.

------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - Not sure why Quinn doesn't just give his spot to Stortini on the 3rd line?  Moreau is just not that effective anymore.

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - Average at best tonight.  I'm sure he's counting down his days as an Oiler.  When the other guys are ready to return, I'm sure he's as good as gone.

------------------

BEERS

None - No one was worthy of a beer tonight. The Oilers sucked. So instead, the Oiler fans get the beer.  We need it for the wasted weekend of misery.  Kegger for the people!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): The 1st Line (They were the best Oilers tonight.  It's too bad that the defence pairings (77 & 37) that played with them for a lot of the time were not very good or it could have made a difference.), Zack Stortini (Once again he plays a good game and bleeds from a fight.), Jeff Deslauriers (Actually wasn't that bad.  He didn't get any help from the team while making 27 saves.), Ladislav Smid (He is turning into a consistent defenseman.  Played another solid game.), Lubomir Visnovsky (He also played pretty good.  He needs to play more of a simple game.)

------------------

JEERS

The Entire Team - That was the second bad effort in a row.  It's very disappointing to see a club that is as good as they have seen lately, just to crap it up in two straight games against divisional rivals.  Just terrible.  You can only use the flu excuse for so long then it becomes redundant.  I don't want to hear it anymore, we need some action, some effort.  Booooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Denis Grebeshkov (The worst of the worst. Mr. Losethepuck), Tom Gilbert (The 2nd worst of the worst)

-------------------

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - The bright side of this game?  The shot total wasn't a 2 to 1 ratio.  The dark side? We lost.  Again. And to a divisional rival.  Again.  *sigh* I can not believe it.  I guess the new 1st line can't blow every team out of the water every game.  The absolute worst part of this game?  Getting shutout. Grrrr.

Paq Twinn - Well that was a stinker. Luongo was good, but the Oilers made him look better. No sustained pressure, no bodies in front. Gilbert had another bad game, and Grebs struggled too. Maybe the trade rumors are getting to them, but they need to be better with Souray and Staios out. JDD played a solid game, but like last night for Khabi, the rest of the team didn't help out much. I give this game a D grade. Get better cause the Avs are good this year. We can't lose 3 in a row.

B&J #74 Edmonton Oilers Recap vs. Calgary Flames 10/24/09

- Who's Out?  Comrie and Brule are both sick and won't play tonight.  So with those two out, the Oilers have recalled Theo Peckham and not a forward.  It seems that the Oilers are going to roll with 11 forwards and 7 defense.  I'll trust Quinn on this one.

- Looking at the NHL stats sheet today, they have Deslauriers as the best goalie in the league right now.  He's played once.  I don't get it?

- The Springfield Falcons seem to be the same as the parent club, the Edmonton Oilers.  The were out shot tonight as well.  This seems to be a trend for both teams. I wonder why?

- The best part about the start to the season so far? The Leafs off to the worst start in the history of the franchise. Ouch! *points finger and laughs*

BAD TIMING PENALTY

Shawn Horcoff - It was a bad way to lose a game.  The Oilers were down 4-2 and Horcoff takes a tripping penalty and the fLames score on the PP.  Now it's 5-2.  That kind of makes it hard to come back now.

------------------

GOAT WATCH

(Smokin' Ray) Ethan Moreau - He was ok.  No worries though, he still sucked.  He really isn't a 2nd line guy, and he's barely a 3rd liner.  Just throwing that out there Quinn.

(Paq Twinn) Robert Nilsson - He was the best out of our two goats.  No matter what, he will be the odd man out when there needs to be roster changes.  He's just not good enough to stick with the Oilers.

------------------

BEERS

Zack Stortini - The guy was on a mission.  He was trying to be a complete guy tonight and was the only one to mess with Iginla.  It's a little shocking when you look at his stats for this game. 1 shot and 1 hit.  That's it?  Something's wrong here because he was all over the place.  I think you deserve a frosty mug of beer. Cheers!

Dustin Penner - The big guy played well.  He really is deserving of his ice time this year.  He scores again to increse his point totals.  Can this guy do any wrong?  For an excellent game, enjoy a cold Pilsner Pens. Cheers!

Lubomir Visnovsky - He also scored tonight.  He's been the best defender that we have and I even think it's helped out Smid so far this year.  He led the team in ice time and had 4 shots on net.  Not a bad night by Lubo.  Let's get drunk to forget the loss.  Cheers!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): Ladislav Smid (He was scrappy and fiesty.  He plays like he has something to prove this year.), Sam Gagner (Looks good with 83 and 27.  It's nice to see Gags excel after a 4th line start to the year. 2 assists tonight.), Ales Hemsky (He is also looking good since the shake up.  He picked up two nice assists and had a solid game.), Steve MacIntyre (I don't get why he only played 0:51 seconds?  His skating has improved big time this season.  At least he had a good seat to watch the game.)

------------------

JEERS

Tom Gilbert - He was the definition of crappy tonight.  A lot of errors were caused by him and Grebs.  Just a bad night for Tommy G. Booooooo!

Denis Grebeshkov - Same goes for Grebs.  Also a really bad night.  I was calling this pairing the "mistake" pairing all game.  Get better because we need you two. Booooooo!

HONORABLE MENTION(S): none

OUR GAME SUMMARIES

Smokin' Ray - How many posts must the Oilers hit? Geez Louise.  Ping! That's all I heard tonight.  This could have been a 10 -5 game for the Oil.  But nooooo.  Now I have to go to work and hear the jackbutt's brag about how great their team is.  That's for that Oilers.  Let's just hope that we kill the Canucks tommorow.
