For Heavens Sakes, What Is Wrong With the Oilers?

As my first official post on Oilers Jambalaya, I will discuss what all Oilers fans have been scratching their heads about since the end of November: the struggles, and why they are happening.

First of all, the struggle is obvious. Being able to finish the job. Countless times over the past few months have the Oilers had the lead (sometimes by multiple goals), or have been tied in the third period. But hey, they've got the lead, so who cares? They're just going to sit back and let the goalies do all the work because they have definitely won the game already. That is what seems to be the mentality right now. Prime examples of this were one, against the very offensive minded Washington Capitals, and two, against THE DEFENDING STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS Pittsburgh Penguins. The Oilers, if I'm not mistaken, had shut out, and shut down Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals, and had a 2-0 lead up until the third period. But hey, they're going to win, because they have the lead. Except, not. They lost. And the same thing happened against PIT.

So, why is this happening? We have many excuses, with the injuries and etc. But, quite frankly, I do not know. and I don't think anyone knows for sure; heck, I don't even think the players know! But, I mean someone could assume what the problem is, they are just giving up in the third. That's it. Plain and simple. Not to mention, they haven't received the best effort in goal, IMO. Injuries are not an excuse to lose 12 games in a row. But, it depends on what you think. If any fans want to believe that injuries are the true problem to this disaster, that's fine. For all those who want answers, I guess what I am trying to say is they are few, if not none. But, if the Oilers snap this skid tonight against the Flames, their fans are going to be very angry, and that's how we like it ;)

Another "Get That Guy Fired" Rally Is In The Works

Well the smell of a "Get Someone Fired" rally is starting to stink in the hockey world once again. No, not in Edmonton again, well not yet anyways.

It seems that our dear old friend and former Oiler main man and current General Manager for the New York Rangers, Glen Sather is really feeling some fan backlash from their own New York Rangers fans. It appears that they want him fired from his job and they are prepared to rally as a group to support it.

With the Rangers sitting at GP54  W24  L23  OTLPTS55 and are -as of this writing - sitting in 9th. Compared to the Oilers, it's not that bad. They are a win away from being back in the playoffs and they are tied with 4 other teams with 55 points, so really, is it that bad?

Ranger fans would say yes.

So how do you get your message out? Have a rally. So what/where/when the hell is this rally you say? Here is the Facebook page for the Rally and here is the petition to sign if you want Glen Sather fired.

If you are lazy, here is what the Facebook Group page says about Glen Sather;

"Tired of Mismanagement, Bad Contracts, being mired in Mediocrity and a lack of results? Come down to Madison Square Garden before the Rangers– Sabres game, join the rally, and let Mr. Jim Dolan know that you want Glen Sather FIRED immediately!!!!!!"

Again, if you are lazy, here is what the Petition says about Glen Sather to James Dolan;

"Dear James Dolan,

For the past 10 years, loyal Rangers fans around the world have watched our beloved team go nowhere due to the leadership of the clubs President and General Manager, Glen Sather. Our franchise has been in a state of disarray for 10+ years, and there is no end in sight. This here petition is being signed by Rangers fans around the globe who are asking you to remove Mr. Sather from his job, and to replace him with someone who will restore our hockey club to the top of the NHL with hopes that we will become Stanley Cup Champions. This petition is being signed by people who want Glen Sather removed whether they are attending the rally March 7th outside Madison Square Garden or not. Remove him please James!

Yours Truly,
Loyal Rangers fans around the globe."

Geez that sounds like the same way he left the Oilers before going to New York, isn't it?

Below are the details for the proposed Rally if you want to attend in person;
When: Sunday, March 7, 2010
Time: 5:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: The Steps Outside Madison Square Garden
Street: 1 Penn Plaza
City/Town: New York, NY

Now with a payroll of $56.6 million and sitting in 9th in the East - possibly 11th or 7th - that isn't a great way to appease your fans. Nevermind the fact that this is New York, and they are quite familiar with the game of hockey and can't be fooled into thinking the NYR have a good product on the ice. They don't.

It's crazy to think that he was the same guy that built, molded and taught that great 80's Oiler squad to 5 Stanley Cups and now he may become jobless. I suppose he could move up in the NYR organization and out of the limelight. Would that make the NYR fans happy? Probably not. I'm sure they just want him gone, period.

Good luck to those organizing and attending this rally. I applaud your efforts, yet wonder if it's worth it? Does James Dolan actually pull the plug on Slats? Do the NYR fans actually get their way? I guess we will see how this unfolds in March after the petition and rally.

Let's just hope for their sake, that they get more than the 7 angry fans that showed up for the failed Fire MacT Rally in Edmonton. They had over 10,000 people sign up on Facebook much like the Ranger fans are doing and 7 guys showed up. That's it. Not really an impact statement.

If I was the organizer of the NYR rally, I wouldn't get my hopes up that people will actually show up. I guess you can always hope, but good luck anyways.

On a side note: I wouldn't be willing to bet that Katz considers bringing Slats back to Edmonton. I think it's possible, but unlikely. *shudders at the thought*

Oil Change Underway

Mike Comrie - According to Larry Brooks of the NY Post,  the New York Rangers are more than just one piece away from being Stanley Cup contenders, he suggests the Rangers could use a few players but don't expect Phaneuf or Kovalchuk. Sather needs to let the team play it out. If he wants to make a move, maybe acquiring a Centre like Comrie for a small price would be worth a shot. If this is the case Mike would likely play on line 1 with Marion Gaborik.

Bobby Ryan -  Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com suggests that Ducks GM Bob Murray will not trade Bobby Ryan and is confident they can get him re-signed.

Petr Sykora - The Minnesota Wild sent Petr Sykora down to there farm team however, Petr did not report and both sides have agreed to terminate Petr's contract and let him become a UFA.

UPDATE: The Anaheim Ducks have re-signed Goaltender Jonas Hiller to a 4 year deal worth 18 mil/ 4.5 a season.

As always all comments are welcome.

Daily Dose (Rumors and Oilers talk)

Quick question Oiler nation, who is your favourite Oiler? Please comment your answer.

Oilers notes: Oilers fans, guess what? Your next game is against the Calgary Flames, so someone will pick up 2 points. Just imagine what the Flames would feel like if they continued their losing streak with a loss against the Oilers. You know, the team that hasn't won a game in 2010? Maybe Lubomir will pull off something like this again Goal against the Flames.

Lubomir Visnovsky - According to Graig Woodburn of Weei.com sports radio network the Boston Bruins are not willing to give the Thrashers what they want for Kovalchuk so they will pursue players like Alexei Ponikarovsky, Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen, and Lubomir Visnovsky instead.

Ilya Kovalchuk - According to Bob Mckenzie of TSN, he stated the the LA Kings are the front runners for Ilya Kovalchuk. Also, NHL Analyst Steve Kouleas was having a chat with Puck Daddy on the score television network and Steve suggested that if the Kings were to acquire Kovalchuk they would have to give up something like Alex Frolov, Jack Johnson, a young roster player/prospect and a 1st round draft choice like I suggested yesterday.

Ray Whitney - According to Darren Dreger of TSN, Ray Whitney may be the most sought after player in the NHL. If what Darren said is true, up to 10 teams have interest. He suggested the LA Kings, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators all have interest just to name a few.

Ethan Moreau - Whoever stated that 5 to 10 teams are interested in Ethan Moreau is full of crap.  Maybe a team or 2, but based on how he has played as of late, I can see why not many teams are interested.

Update on Moreau - I have seen rumors on various sites that the Ducks like Souray...well now it seems they are one of the few teams that like Moreau as well. We will have to wait and see how this all pans out. Moreau is currently a team worse -29 on beers and jeers points done by Smokin' Ray.
